Spiral and interlocking grain in Eucalyptus dunnii 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Spiral grain in 181 trees from a 9-year-old plantation-grown Eucalyptus dunnii was normally distributed with mean -0.33 degrees (to the left) and standard deviation 1.7 degrees, and was affected by family and by crown asymmetry. Interlocking grain was common, exhibiting a mean amplitude of 3.4 degrees (standard deviation 1.5°) and a mean wavelength of 39 mm (standard deviation 12 mm). The relatively large amplitude of interlocking grain means that most trees will have spiral grain that alternates between left and right during each year. The wavelength of interlocking grain is influenced by tree size, but amplitude of interlocking is under genetic control. The activity of the medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferent system in mustached bats, Pteronotus p. parnellii, was studied by monitoring changes in the mechanical properties of the cochlea. The changing properties were expressed by the decay time (DT) of cochlear microphonic potentials produced by transient-induced ringing (Henson et al., 1995). Tape-recorded roost noise (biosonar and communication sounds) produced sudden, marked decreases in DT when presented to the contralateral ear of animals adapted to the quiet. When the animals were first removed from their roosts the DT was relatively short (1.2-1.5 ms) but this gradually lengthened by about 0.5-1.0 ms as they rested in a quiet chamber. The time required to reach a stable, quiet-adapted state after noise exposure varied with SPL and exposure time; in many experiments recovery was in the range of 90-120 min. When quiet-adapted bats were isolated and allowed to fly and echolocate for 20 min, the DTs measured within a few minutes after the end of the flight were also short and only slowly returned to longer preflight values. The administration of a single dose of gentamicin, which blocks MOC effects, greatly reduced the amount of suppression (damping) observed after periods of noise and echolocation sound exposure. We conclude that tonic MOC activity is induced by the natural vocalizations and roost noise and this activity probably regulates and protects the highly resonant cochlear partition. 相似文献

Abstract: The chemical stability of citral, a flavor component widely used in beverage, food, and fragrance products, in oil-in-water emulsions stabilized by surfactants with different charge characteristics was investigated. Emulsions were prepared using cationic (lauryl alginate, LAE), non-ionic (polyoxyethylene (23) lauryl ether, Brij 35), and anionic (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS) surfactants at pH 3.5. The citral concentration decreased over time in all the emulsions, but the rate of decrease depended on surfactant type. After 7 d storage, the citral concentrations remaining in the emulsions were around 60% for LAE- or Brij 35-stabilized emulsions and 10% for SDS-stabilized emulsions. An increase in the local proton (H+) concentration around negatively charged droplet surfaces may account for the more rapid citral degradation observed in SDS-stabilized emulsions. A strong metal ion chelator (EDTA), which has previously been shown to be effective at increasing the oxidative stability of labile components, had no effect on citral stability in LAE- or Brij 35-stabilized emulsions, but it slightly decreased the initial rate of citral degradation in SDS-stabilized emulsions. These results suggest the surfactant type used to prepare emulsions should be controlled to improve the chemical stability of citral in emulsion systems. 相似文献

There is a growing trend toward utilizing more label friendly ingredients in foods and beverages. In this study, we focused on the utilization of sucrose monopalmitate (SMP) as a non-ionic surfactant for stabilizing acidic beverages. Orange oil-in-water emulsions (5% (w/w) oil) stabilized by SMP were prepared using high pressure homogenization (pH 7). The minimum droplet diameter was around 130 nm, while the minimum mass ratio of SMP-to-oil required to produce small droplets was 0.1-to-1. Extensive droplet aggregation occurred when the pH of the emulsions was reduced from pH 7 to 3, with the mean particle diameter increasing from around 0.13 to 7.25 μm. This effect was attributed to an appreciable reduction in droplet charge when the pH was reduced (ζ ≈− 35 mV at pH 3 and − 2 mV at pH 3) thereby decreasing the electrostatic repulsion between droplets. It was proposed that the negative charge on the SMP-coated droplets was due to the presence of anionic substances within the droplets, such as palmitic acid (pKa ≈ 4.9). Palmitic acid may have been an impurity in the original ingredient or it may have been generated due to degradation of SMP during storage. The addition of anionic lyso-lecithin markedly improved the stability of the emulsions to droplet aggregation and phase separation at low pH, which was attributed to an increased electrostatic repulsion between the droplets. Raman dispersive microscopic imaging techniques are finding ever-increasing applications in pharmaceutical research for their ability to provide spatial and spectral information about the sample. Spectral data acquired from dispersive Raman instruments utilizing charge-coupled device detectors are characterized by occasional high intensity spikes arising from cosmic ray events. These random cosmic spikes are superimposed on chemically meaningful spectra. Due to their high intensity and potential influence on variance structures, it is often crucial to filter cosmic spikes from data prior to the use of multivariate algorithms to extract chemical information from the image cube. Some extremely challenging cosmic spikes are found to seriously interfere with multivariate data analysis for our application, e.g., spikes with bandwidth greater than the bandwidth from species of interest, spikes in neighboring image pixels occurring at the same spectral channels, spikes right on top of the band of interest, etc. A practical algorithm is proposed for semiautomated cosmic spike removal. The algorithm is computationally efficient, conceptually simple, and easy to implement. It is an alternative to methods using repetitive measurements by taking advantage of the spatial characteristic of imaging techniques and existing knowledge from the formulation. The algorithm has been shown to generate recovered spectra with negligible spectral distortion. The utility of the algorithm will be illustrated by the analysis of Raman images of pharmaceutical samples. 相似文献

The actin cytoskeleton mediates a variety of essential biological functions in cells, including division, shape changes, and movement. A number of studies have suggested that the abundant submembranous actin cytoskeleton present in the cortex of many cell types is involved in the regulation of cell volume. This relationship is supported by numerous works which document the changes in the structural organization of the actin cytoskeleton which accompany cell volume changes and the F-actin-dependence of the regulatory volume responses. In addition, other studies demonstrate structural and functional relationships between the actin cytoskeleton and the membrane transporters known to be involved in cell volume homeostasis. This review provides a summary of the current level of knowledge in this area and discusses the mechanisms which may underlie the linkage between the actin cytoskeleton and cell volume regulation. 相似文献
