Effects of hypothalamic temperature changes on the sweat rate in Macaca mulatta

The concept of cardiac reconditioning centers for the prevention and rehabilitation of coronary patients has been tremendously successful in Germany over the past 20 years. At least 40 such centers are located throughout the country. Physicians, nurses, and physical therapists work closely together in the various facets of the rehabilitation process. The financial backing for these facilities is primarily through governmental and regional insurance companies, whose officials are apparently convinced that in the long run supporting preventive measures is financially sound. Objective data supporting their convictions come from studies such as that of Brusis, who showed that such as that of 1,500 employees was diminished by nearly 70 percent during a two-year period after cardiac reconditioning, as compared to a similar time period before the rehabilitation experience. Subjective benefits, which are extremely difficult to quantitate in meaningful terms, were nonetheless expressed by nearly all the patients with whom I conversed. Perhaps they have experienced the same feelings that Mark Twain did when he observed that "all frets and worries and chafings sank to sleep in the presence of the benignant serenity of the Alps; the Great Spirit of the Mountains breathed his own peace upon their hurt minds and sore hearts and healed them."     

Application of "subjective gustometry and olfactometry" for determination of reaction kinetics during sensorical changes in technological processes (author''s transl)

Under special conditions the "subjective gustometry and olfactometry" (SGO) allows to combine the concentration with the intensity of flavour components by theoretical means. In this way it can be used for quantitative determination of flavour concentrations as well as for kinetic measurements of sensorical changes. Thus the equations of chemical reaction kinetics (reactionorder, speed and temperature dependancy) can be used for calculation of sensorical changes as theoretically demonstrated for the formation and decomposition of different flavour components. The requirements for indicators, aroma indices, technological processes and storage conditions for a special quality criterium can also be calculated. By using the formation of cooked flavour in apple juice as a practical example the correctness of the theoretical calculations is demonstrated.     

Deformation Behaviour of Iron‐Rich Iron‐Aluminium Alloys with Ternary Transition Metal Additions

The hardness and yield stress at room temperature and the brittle‐to‐ductile transition temperature of Fe‐Al alloys with 16 at.% Al, which is in the range of the so‐called K‐state with possible short‐range ordering reactions, and ternary additions of 0.5 and 4 at.% of the transition metals Cr, Mo, Mn, V, Ti and Ni were studied with respect to possible hardening effects of the ternary additions. The addition of Cr, Mo and Mn to the Fe‐Al alloys produce solid‐solution hardening which corresponds to the hardening effect of Al. Only Ti, V and Ni produce extra hardening effects which cannot be related to solid‐solution hardening. This extra hardening is attributed to possible fine NiAl precipitates in the Fe‐Al‐Ni case and to possible enhanced short‐range ordering and/or fine carbide precipitates in the cases of Fe‐Al‐V and Fe‐Al‐Ti.     

Microscopy under pressure--an optical chamber system for fluorescence microscopic analysis of living cells under high hydrostatic pressure

High hydrostatic pressure (HHP) becomes more and more interesting for life science research, since it can be employed to inactivate various cells. To directly monitor "cells under pressure," the development of an optical high-pressure chamber is required. Therefore, an optical pressure chamber that can be used for up to 300 MPa was constructed. This chamber has already been described as a tool for in situ observation of dynamic changes of microscopic structures in bright field as well as phase contrast. In combination with an inverted microscope, we obtained brilliant microscopic color pictures with an optical resolution more than 0.56 microm. Here, we demonstrate the capabilities of the HHP cell, in combination with epifluorescence microscopy. Using a nonadherent human B-cell line (Raji, ATCC CCL 86), stained with the fluorescent dyes propidium iodide, Hoechst 33342, or dihexyloxacarbocyanine iodide, we were able to show that the system is suitable to perform fluorescence microscopic analyses, with pressures up to 300 MPa, with viable mammalian cells.     

The eye of Eila Hopper Ross

In 1936, when Eila Hopper Ross (nee Hopper) was putting the final stroke of paint on her six-foot oil canvas of a life model at the Ontario College of Art, she had not dreamed that in the year to follow she would embark upon a life's career of anatomical study and attention to intricate detail in her own work as a medical illustrator. Though she had early aspirations herself of going into medicine--having been raised in a medical environment with her father, Dr. David Alexander Hopper, regularly receiving pharmaceutical literature with impressive illustrations--Hopper Ross was not aware of medical illustration as a profession. It was Maria Wishart, then director of the Medical Art Service Unit at the University of Toronto, who saw Hopper Ross' final exhibition at the Ontario College of Art and recommended she consider a career in medical art. As a result, Hopper Ross studied for two years (1937-1939) in the Department of Art as Applied to Medicine at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland under the direction of Professor Max Br?del.     

A regulatory role for recombinase activating genes, RAG-1 and RAG-2, in T cell development

Effects of etoposide (VP-16) and cytosine arabinoside (Ara-C) on the cell cycle of HL-60 and THP-1 cells were studied by flow cytometry using the bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU)/DNA assay technique to investigate the efficacy of VP-16 for monocytic leukemia cells. VP-16 inhibited the proliferation of THP-1 cells more strongly than that of HL-60 cells at any concentrations used at 24 and 48 hr. VP-16 arrested HL-60 and THP-1 cells in the G2/M phase and reduced them in the G0/G1 and early S phase at higher concentrations. There was no significant difference in the percentage of G2/M phase cells at the same concentration between both cells. However, reduction in the G0/G1 and early S phase cells was more marked in THP-1 than HL-60 cells significantly. On the other hand, Ara-C perturbed the cell cycle of HL-60 cells more than that of THP-1 cells at 24 and 48 hr. These results suggest that the effects of VP-16 on the cell cycle may be more intense in THP-1 than HL-60 cells, and support the efficacy of VP-16 for treating monocytic leukemia in vivo.     

Atomic scale interface engineering for strain compensated epitaxially grown InAs/AlSb superlattices

This paper presents a systematic investigation of strain compensation schemes for InAs/AlSb superlattices (SLs) on GaSb substrates. Short growth interruptions (soak times) under varying arsenic and/or antimony beam equivalent pressures in InAs/AlSb SLs with exemplary dimensions of about ((2.4/2.4) ± 0.2) nm were investigated to achieve strain compensation. When using uncracked As(4), strain compensation was found to be unaccomplishable unless sub-monolayer AlAs spikes were inserted at the InAs → AlSb interface. In contrast, the supply of cracked As(2) dimers leads directly to the formation of strain compensating AlAs-like interfaces. This mechanism allows various growth sequences for strain compensated superlattices, including soak-time-free and Sb-soak-only SL growth. Each of the two latter approaches yields layers with excellent crystal quality and minimal intermixing at the heterointerfaces as verified by high resolution x-ray diffraction analysis and transmission electron microscopy.     

Long COVID: Association of Functional Autoantibodies against G-Protein-Coupled Receptors with an Impaired Retinal Microcirculation

Long COVID (LC) describes the clinical phenotype of symptoms after infection with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Diagnostic and therapeutic options are limited, as the pathomechanism of LC is elusive. As the number of acute SARS-CoV-2 infections was and is large, LC will be a challenge for the healthcare system. Previous studies revealed an impaired blood flow, the formation of microclots, and autoimmune mechanisms as potential factors in this complex interplay. Since functionally active autoantibodies against G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCR-AAbs) were observed in patients after SARS-CoV-2 infection, this study aimed to correlate the appearance of GPCR-AAbs with capillary microcirculation. The seropositivity of GPCR-AAbs was measured by an established cardiomyocyte bioassay in 42 patients with LC and 6 controls. Retinal microcirculation was measured by OCT–angiography and quantified as macula and peripapillary vessel density (VD) by the Erlangen-Angio Tool. A statistical analysis yielded impaired VD in patients with LC compared to the controls, which was accentuated in female persons. A significant decrease in macula and peripapillary VD for AAbs targeting adrenergic β2-receptor, MAS-receptor angiotensin-II-type-1 receptor, and adrenergic α1-receptor were observed. The present study might suggest that a seropositivity of GPCR-AAbs can be linked to an impaired retinal capillary microcirculation, potentially mirroring the systemic microcirculation with consecutive clinical symptoms.
