With a community sample of 192 women who had been sexually abused during childhood, the investigators determined if methods of coping in adulthood with the aftermath of child sexual abuse were associated with current symptoms of psychological distress. Multiple regression analyses indicated that disengagement methods of coping with the sexual abuse accounted for unique variance in general psychological distress even after controlling for characteristics of the abuse and methods of coping with other stressors. Disengagement methods of coping were also used more often to deal with the stressful aspects of having been sexually abused than to deal with other stressful events. Assembly of tail fibers of coliphage T4 requires the action of helper proteins. In the absence of one of these, protein 38 (p38), p37, constituting the distal part of the long tail fiber, fails to oligomerize. In the absence of the other, p57, p34 (another component of the long tail fiber), p37, and p12 (the subunit of the short tail fiber) remain unassembled. p38 can be replaced by the Tfa (tail fiber assembly) protein (pTfa) of phage lambda, which has the advantage of remaining soluble even when produced in massive amounts. The mechanisms of action of the helpers are unknown. As a first step towards elucidation of these mechanisms, p57 and pTfa have been purified to homogeneity and have been crystallized. The identity of gene 57 (g57), not known with certainty previously, has been established. The 79-residue protein p57 represents a very exotic polypeptide. It is oligomeric and acidic (an excess of nine negative charges). It does not contain Phe, Trp, Tyr, His, Pro, and Cys. Only 25 N-terminal residues were still able to complement a g57 amber mutant, although with a reduced efficiency. In cells overproducing the protein, it assumed a quasi-crystalline structure in the form of highly ordered fibers. They traversed the cells longitudinally (and thus blocked cell division) with a diameter approaching that of the cell and with a hexagonal appearance. The 194-residue pTfa is also acidic (an excess of 13 negative charges) and is likely to be dimeric.  相似文献

The half-life of 60Fe has been measured to be T12 = (1.49 ± 0.27) × 106 a, significantly longer than the one previous measurement of Roy and Kohman which reported a value of 3 × 105 a uncertain by a factor of 3. The present value was obtained from measurements of specific activity and radioisotope concentration in a material produced by spallation of copper with 191 MeV protons. 60Fe/Fe ratios in the range of 10?8 were measured with the Argonne FN tandem-superconducting linear accelerator system in conjunction with an Enge split-pole spectrograph. The specific activity of 60Fe in Fe was measured through the grow-in of the 1.332 MeV gamma-ray line of the 60Co daughter activity.  相似文献

1-Acyl-2-succinyl glycero-3-phosphorylcholine (GPC) was synthesized and its properties described. Although 1-acyl-2-succinyl GPC is a good substrate for succinate dehydrogenase, experiments on the incorporation of [2,3-14C] succinate into mitochondrial lipids gave no evidence to indicate that it is an intermediate in the enzymic oxidation of succinate to fumerate, as has been suggested earlier.  相似文献

Artificial recharge is a technique used increasingly to supplement drinking water supplies. To assess the potential water quality changes that occur during subsurface passage, a comprehensive deep-well injection experiment was carried out for a recharge scheme, where pretreated, aerobic surface water was injected at 300 m depth into an anaerobic aquifer. Water quality parameters were recorded over the 854-days long injection phase. The evolution of the major ion and redox chemistry was analyzed with a three-dimensional reactive multicomponent transport model. It was found that the oxidation of pyrite was the main driverforwater quality changes and that reaction rates depended significantly on the spatially/temporally varying groundwater temperature. With the temperature-dependency of the oxidation reactions incorporated into the model, the simulations give an accurate picture of the temporal and spatial evolution of the hydrochemical changes that occurred during the experiment. To delineate the influence of physical and chemical processes on local concentration changes the results of the reactive transport model simulations were compared with the corresponding results from nonreactive simulations. The study emphasizes the suitability of mechanistic multicomponent reactive transport modeling as an integrative tool for data analysis when physical transport and chemical processes interact.  相似文献

Toxicants may affect juveniles more than adults because of physiological and behavioral aspects. When developing toxicity tests, this issue is often not addressed, and the most sensitive end point may be ignored. The topic was raised by a European working group aiming to develop a standard toxicity test with the predatory mite, Hypoaspis (Geolaelaps) aculeifer Canestrini, as this species was included in the EU Guidance documentfortesting of pesticides. To assess whether the juvenile life stages are the most susceptible, we examined the acute toxicity of dimethoate on larvae, protonymphs, deutonymphs, males, and females of H. aculeifer. The mites were exposed to 0, 2, 4, and 6 mg dimethoate kg(-1) for 7 days in an OECD artificial soil (5% organic matter). Total juvenile biomass, reproduction, mortality, and population growth rate (pgr) lambda were assessed at the end of the test. A comparison of mortality ranked the sensitivity of the life stages: Larvae (LC50 = 3.8 mg kg(-1)) > protonymphs (LC50 = 5.3 mg kg(-1)) > males (LC50 = 5.6 mg kg(-1)) > deutonymphs (LC50 = 7.1 mg kg(-1)) > females (LC50 = 7.6 mg kg(-1)). Effects on reproduction and pgr were significant at 2 mg dimethoate kg(-1), with population decline starting at this concentration. Thus, a test system with H. aculeifer including reproduction as end point is a rational approach, as reproduction will encompass juvenile mortality, at least with respect to dimethoate. Moreover, we suggest that pgr should be included in chronic standard tests because of high ecological relevance and the feasibility of applying it.  相似文献
