The sawdust of Calabrian pine was used as sorbent for the removal of Cu(II) ions from aqueous solution of copper sulfate pentahydrate (CuSO4.5H2O) at different concentrations, pHs and temperatures. The results showed that about 65–81% of Cu(II) ions in the solution could be adsorbed on the sawdust. The percentage of adsorped Cu(II) ions onto the sawdust increased with increasing initial concentration. Kinetic studies indicated that the sorption process followed the first order reversible kinetic model. It was also determined that the sorption process obeyed the Freundlich isotherm. Furthermore, the sorption thermodynamic was investigated in detail.  相似文献

A novel composite material consisting of polypropylene (PP) fibers in a random poly(propylene‐co‐ethylene) (PPE) matrix was prepared and its properties were evaluated. The thermal and mechanical properties of PP–PPE composites were studied by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) with reference to the fiber concentration. Although, by increasing PP fiber concentration in PPE, no significant difference was found in melting and crystallization temperatures of the PPE, the storage, and the tensile and flexural modulus of the composites increased linearly with fiber concentrations up to 50%, 1.5, 1.0, 1.3 GPa, respectively, which was approximately four times higher than that for the pure PPE. There is a shift in glass transition temperature of the composite with increasing fiber concentration in the composite and the damping peak became flatter, which indicates the effectiveness of fiber–matrix interaction. A higher concentration of long fibers (>50% w/w) resulted in fiber packing problems, difficulty in dispersion, and an increase in void content, which led to a reduction in modulus. Cox–Krenchel and Haplin–Tsai equations were used to predict tensile modulus of random fiber‐reinforced composites. A Cole–Cole analysis was performed to understand the phase behavior of the composites. A master curve was constructed based on time–temperature superposition (TTS) by using data over the temperature range from −50 to 90°C, which allowed for the prediction of very long and short time behavior of the composite. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A Borrelia burgdorferi N40 genomic expression library was screened with serum from actively infected mice to identify gene products that elicit protective immunity. A clone that contained a putative bicistronic operon containing two genes that encoded 20- and 22-kDa lipoproteins was identified and sequenced. These genes showed homology with the genes encoding decorin binding proteins DbpB and DbpA, respectively, of B. burgdorferi 297 and B31. N40-dbpA DNA hybridized with B. burgdorferi N40 DNA on a single 48-kb linear plasmid. Homologous genes could be amplified under various degrees of stringency by PCR or hybridized by Southern blotting from B. burgdorferi sensu stricto N40 and B31, and from B. burgdorferi sensu lato PBi and 25015, but not PKo. Recombinant N40-DbpB and N40-DbpA were reactive with antibody in serum from infected mice, and serum was more reactive against N40-DbpA than against B. burgdorferi N40 recombinant P39, OspC, or OspA. Sera from mice infected with B. burgdorferi sensu lato strains PKo and PBi were weakly reactive against N40-DbpB and N40-DbpA, and sera from mice infected with 25015 were moderately reactive, compared to sera from mice infected with B. burgdorferi N40. Hyperimmunization of mice with N40-DbpA, but not N40-DbpB, induced protective immunity against syringe challenge with cultured B. burgdorferi N40. DbpA may therefore be one of the antigens responsible for eliciting protective antibody known to exist in serum from infected mice. DNA amplification and serology suggest that DbpB and DbpA are likely to have homologs throughout the B. burgdorferi sensu lato family, but they are likely to be heterogeneous.  相似文献

The authors have developed a PSpice model of the electrical behavior of DNA molecules for use in nanoelectronic circuit design. To describe the relationship between the current through DNA and the applied voltage we used published results of the direct measurements of electrical conduction through DNA molecules. The experimental dc current-voltage (-) curves show a nonlinear conduction mechanism as well as the existence of a temperature dependent semiconductive voltage gap. A weighted least-squares polynomial fit to the experimental data at one temperature, with fitted temperature dependent polynomial coefficient of the linear term, was used as a mathematical model of electrical behavior of DNA. An equivalent electrical circuit was created in PSpice in which DNA was modeled as a voltage-controlled current source described by the mathematical model that includes temperature dependence . PSpice simulations with this model generated - curves at other temperatures that were in excellent agreement with the corresponding experimental data (average deviation 5%). This is important because having models of DNA molecules in the form of equivalent electronic circuits would be useful in the design of nanoelectronic circuits and devices.  相似文献

Modified Moore swabs (MMS; consisting of a polyvinyl chloride cartridge filled with gauze) capture microorganisms within the packed gauze as water flows through the cartridge, while continuous flow centrifugation (CFC) uses centrifugation to sediment the microorganisms while water continuously flows in the system. This study evaluated and compared the efficacy of MMS and CFC for concentration and subsequent detection of Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Salmonella from large volumes of water (10 liters). Water samples were spiked at levels of 10(1), 10(2), 10(3), and 10(4) CFU/100 ml with three-strain cocktails of either E. coli O157:H7 or Salmonella serovars, which had been previously transformed with a plasmid to express resistance to ampicillin as well as green, red, or cyan fluorescent proteins. Plating was performed before and after concentration on tryptic soy agar supplemented with ampicillin in order to quantitate the concentration efficiencies of each method. The two lowest spiking levels were also enriched in low volumes of tryptic soy broth supplemented with ampicillin followed by testing via lateral flow devices. Significant (P < 0.05) concentrations of initial levels of E. coli O157:H7 in the range of 0.7 to 1.0 and 1.2 to 1.4 log were achieved within approximately 35 min of processing time via MMS and CFC, respectively. Similarly, significant (P < 0.05) concentrations were also achieved for Salmonella with 0.9 to 1.2 and 1.2 to 1.4 log concentration for MMS and CFC, respectively. There were no statistical differences (P > 0.05) between the two concentration methods in their ability to concentrate either of the two target bacteria. Significantly (P > 0.05) more spiked samples were detected by lateral flow devices following concentration and enrichment than for nonconcentrated, enriched samples. It is concluded that both MMS and CFC have potential to be used to enhance the sensitivity of downstream bacterial detection methods used to test irrigation water for the presence of foodborne pathogens.  相似文献

The feasibility of low-temperature (7 °C) anaerobic digestion for the treatment of a trichloroethylene (TCE) contaminated wastewater was investigated. Two expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) bioreactors (R1 and R2) were employed for the mineralisation of a synthetic volatile fatty acid based wastewater at an initial organic loading rate (OLR) of 3 kg COD m−3 d−1, and an operating temperature of 15 °C. Successive reductions in OLR to 0.75 kg COD m−3 d−1, and operational temperature to 7 °C, resulted in stable bioreactor operation by day 417, with COD removal efficiency and biogas CH4 content ≥74%, for both bioreactors. Subsequently, the influent to R1 was supplemented with increasing concentrations (10, 20, 30 mg l−1) of TCE, while R2 acted as a control. At an influent TCE concentration of 30 mg l−1, although phase average TCE removal rates of 79% were recorded, a sustained decrease in R1 performance was observed, with COD removal of 6%, and % biogas CH4 of 3% recorded on days 595 and 607, respectively. Specific methanogenic activity (SMA) assays identified a general shift from acetate- to hydrogen-mediated methanogenesis in both R1 and R2 biomass, while toxicity assays confirmed an increased sensitivity of the acetoclastic community in R1 to TCE and dichloroethylene (DCE), which contributed to acetate accumulation. Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR) analysis of the methanogenic community confirmed the dominance of hydrogenotrophic methanogens in both R1 and R2, representing 71-89% of the total methanogenic population, however acetoclastic Methanosaeta were the dominant organisms, based on 16S rRNA gene clone library analysis of reactor biomass. The greatest change in the bacterial community, as demonstrated by UPGMA analysis of DGGE banding profiles, was observed in R1 biomass between days 417 and 609, although 88% similarity was retained between these sampling points.  相似文献

Scotch pine, eastern spruce, and eastern beech samples sawed longitudinally were impregnated with a new type of polymerization mixture (macroinimer and styrene), leading to crosslinked block copolymers of styrene and poly(ethylene glycol). Weight gains of 36.37–91.13% were obtained after polymerization for 2 h. Water uptake of the polymerized wood was found to be 35.13–72.07% after a water soak test of 144 h. While spruce gave the highest uptake (72.07%), beech showed the lowest value (35.13%). The specimens impregnated with the mixture of macroinimer and styrene showed a water-repellent effectiveness of 35.14–58.15% after a water soaking test of 144 h. The highest values of water-repellent effectiveness were found for spruce, while the lowest values were obtained for pine. A maximum antiswell efficiency (ASE) of 42.43% was obtained for spruce, followed in order by beech and pine, respectively. The ASE value increases with an increase in wt % gain. Improvements of 19.12% in longitudinal compression and 25% in bending strength were also achieved for spruce samples with low weight percent gain. Monarch birch wood (Betula maximowiczina Regel) wastes were phenolated in the presence of HCl as a catalyst at 60–150°C for various reaction times. Typical kinetic parameters along with percent reacted wood and phenol were determined by using kinetic models. In addition, according to the transition‐state theory the activation parameters of wood phenolysis was determined. The percent reacted wood wastes depicted that about 90% of the wood could be liquefied into phenol at a temperature of 150°C. However, about 30% of phenol was found to react with wood components. The kinetic studies showed that wood phenolysis with HCl catalyst at 60–150°C obviously followed a bimolecular type of second‐order reaction. Activation energy was found to be 13.438 kJ mol?1 from an Arrhenius plot. Furthermore, the findings related with activation enthalpy showed that the wood phenolysis had dominantly endothermic reaction nature. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
