OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of bilateral hypoglossal and and glossopharyngeal nerve block on epiglottic and soft palate position and tracheal and pharyngeal pressures in exercising horses. ANIMALS: 5 Standardbreds. PROCEDURE: Tracheal and pharyngeal pressures were measured in 5 Standardbreds exercising at the speed at which the horses achieved 50, 75, and 100% of maximal heart rate after bilateral hypoglossal and glossopharyngeal nerve block and without nerve block. Nerve block was achieved by injection of 1 to 2 ml of 2% mepivicaine hydrochloride between the glossopharyngeal and hypoglossal nerves, as they coursed through the medial compartment of the diverticulum of the auditory tube (guttural pouch), using videoendoscopic guidance and an injection apparatus. RESULTS: Compared with control values, peak inspiratory tracheal pressure was significantly (P = 0.02) more negative, and peak pharyngeal inspiratory pressure was less negative (P = 0.004) after bilateral hypoglossal and glossopharyngeal nerve block. Respiratory frequency was significantly (P = 0.024) lower after nerve block, compared with control values. The epiglottis was unstable and retroflexed through the rima glottis during inspiration after bilateral hypoglossal and glossopharyngeal nerve block. Despite loss of contact between the epiglottis and the caudal free margin of the soft palate, dorsal displacement of the soft palate did not occur. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Loss of contact of the epiglottis with the soft palate did not affect soft palate position, suggesting that when the soft palate is normal, the epiglottis does not function as a support, holding the soft palate in a ventral position. Therefore, epiglottic dysfunction is not solely responsible for intermittent dorsal displacement of the soft palate in horses, and neuromuscular dysfunction involving the hyoepiglotticus muscle, geniohyoideus muscle, or the hypoglossal nerve may cause epiglottic retroflexion in horses.  相似文献

This paper discusses the use of pulse techniques for analysis of zonal elution data for the determination of mass-transfer and axial dispersion constants for porous support materials with adsorption to the surface or to a surface-bonded phase. As an example, this paper considers the case of controlled pore glass (CPG) with a bonded phase that is used with microcolumns and a flow injection analysis system. For the CPG, axial dispersion in the form of eddy mixing can be described by l = 0.203, and the overall mass-transfer term, K(OL) = 3.9 x 10(-6) cm/s. Additionally, an affinity chromatography model was adapted to effectively describe systems employing CPG as the support material through modification of equations describing typical affinity chromatography systems and by inclusion of an axial dispersion term in the calculation of N. This model was used to predict breakthrough curves for cadmium adsorption by 8-hydroxyquinolinol immobilized on CPG packed in microcolumns. In general, the information from the model can be used to extract equilibrium-based constants (binding strengths and site capacities) from a nonequilibrium flow system. The data and model can also be employed in determining the performance for scaled-up extraction systems. The endotoxin-induced inflammatory response during coliform mastitis is difficult to control with the currently available therapeutics. Endothelial cells are among the first cell type to be engaged in the inflammatory response and can modulate the severity of inflammation by producing proinflammatory mediators upon endotoxin exposure. Ethyl pyruvate, an ethyl ester of pyruvic acid, can ameliorate endotoxin-induced inflammatory responses by inhibiting the production of proinflammatory mediators in several in vitro and in vivo endotoxemia models. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of ethyl pyruvate on the production of vascular proinflammatory mediators that are associated with the pathogenesis of coliform mastitis. The ability of ethyl pyruvate to reduce the expression of proinflammatory mediators was evaluated in cultured bovine mammary endothelial cells (BMEC) stimulated with endotoxin. Treatment of endotoxin-stimulated BMEC with ethyl pyruvate significantly reduced gene expression of IL-6, IL-8, and intercellular adhesion molecule 1 as well as expression of eicosanoid-producing enzymes, including cyclooxygenase 2 and 15-lipoxygenase 1. This is the first time that the effect of ethyl pyruvate was evaluated in an in vitro BMEC model of coliform mastitis. The ability of ethyl pyruvate to effectively inhibit gene and protein expression of potent vascular proinflammatory mediators in vitro warrants further investigations to assess in vivo efficacy. Ethyl pyruvate is safe for human consumption, and it may be an attractive candidate as a therapeutic in ameliorating the severe pathogenesis associated with coliform mastitis.  相似文献

Monolithic poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene dimethacrylate) and poly(butyl methacrylate-co-ethylene dimethacrylate) capillary columns, which incorporate the new monomer [6,6]-phenyl-C(61)-butyric acid 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate ester, have been prepared and their chromatographic performance have been tested for the separation of small molecules in the reversed phase. While addition of the C60-fullerene monomer to the glycidyl methacrylate-based monolith enhanced column efficiency 18-fold, to 85,000 plates/m at a linear velocity of 0.46 mm/s and a retention factor of 2.6, when compared to the parent monolith, the use of butyl methacrylate together with the carbon nanostructured monomer afforded monolithic columns with an efficiency for benzene exceeding 110,000 plates/m at a linear velocity of 0.32 mm/s and a retention factor of 4.2. This high efficiency is unprecedented for separations using porous polymer monoliths operating in an isocratic mode. Optimization of the chromatographic parameters affords near baseline separation of 6 alkylbenzenes in 3 min with an efficiency of 64,000 plates/m. The presence of 1 wt % or more of water in the polymerization mixture has a large effect on both the formation and reproducibility of the monoliths. Other factors such as nitrogen exposure, polymerization conditions, capillary filling method, and sonication parameters were all found to be important in producing highly efficient and reproducible monoliths.  相似文献

A β-content tolerance interval (TI) is a statistical interval which contains at least some fraction (proportion) β of the population with a given confidence level. When we are interested in the precision of a quality characteristic, a TI for the sample variance is useful. In this paper, we consider an exact two-sided β-content TI for the sample variance from a normal distribution with a specified ratio of the tail probabilities. The proposed tolerance interval allows the practitioner more control over how the probabilities in the tails are distributed, which may be useful in certain applications. A comparison with an existing two-sided β-content TI shows that the proposed TI is better on the basis of expected coverage and standard deviation of the coverage. In addition, the proposed TI is shown to require fewer subgroups to achieve a specific accuracy level. Moreover, a phase II control chart with guaranteed performance is obtained from the proposed TI. Finally, a real and a simulated data are used for illustration.  相似文献

A number of current control systems for aircraft have been specified with statecharts. The risk of failures requires the use of a formal testing approach to ensure that all possible faults are considered. However, testing the compliance of an implementation of a system to its specification is dependent on the specification method and little work has been reported relating to the use of statechart-specific methods. This paper describes a modification of a formal testing method for extended finite-state machines to handle the above problem. The method allows one to demonstrate correct behaviour of an implementation of some system, with respect to its specification, provided certain specific requirements for both of them are satisfied. The case study illustrates these and shows the applicability of the method. By considering the process used to develop the system it is possible to reduce the size of the test set dramatically; the method to be described is easy to automate.
