High extinction, broadband polarisers using long-period fibre gratings in few-mode fibres

Long-period fibre gratings in specially designed birefringent few-mode fibres are used to demonstrate spectrally flat polarisers with bandwidths of 10 nm and polarisation extinction levels of 20 dB. This is enabled by the special dispersive properties of few-mode fibres, yielding fibre polarisers with performance approaching that of bulk-optic devices.

Enhancement of mass transfer in a two-layer Taylor-Couette apparatus with axial flow

The effect of axial flow on the mass transfer through a liquid-liquid interface in a two-layer Taylor-Couette system is studied. The mass transfer of a passive scalar is driven by the diffusion through the boundary, enhanced by the convective mass transport due to the Taylor-Couette vortical flow, which is in turn affected by the axial pressure gradient. Numerical modeling shows that the axial flow obviates the symmetry of the distribution of the local Sherwood number, Sh, in a vortical cell and leads to decrease of its average counterpart. For better physical insight into this effect, simplified kinematic models of the phenomenon were considered. The numerical model shows at Sc=1 to 10 (Sc being the Schmidt number) that the mass transfer is enhanced by vortical flow in the regions where the motion is directed towards the interface. The axial throughflow makes for elongation of the Taylor vortices in the axial direction and reduces the area of the above regions, thereby increasing the local concentration gradient and reducing the mass transfer rate. Simplified analytical results for Sc?1 indicate redistribution of the mass flux over the interface compared with the case of Sc=1 to 10. The origin of this phenomenon is explained. It is also demonstrated that Sh scales as Pe^1/2 for the whole range of Sc, Pe being the Peclet number of the vortical motion.

Materials for ophthalmic coatings in PVD – coating equipments In our days we cannot have an isolated view only at the coatings for organic lenses. We need to analyse the interaction of substrates, hardcoats and layerdesigns to deliver a longlife – quality of the complete complex “eyeglases”. Special in the field of organic substrates we could observe in the last years an enormous change. The push to deliver more and more thinner and lighter lenses, produces materials with higher indices. The result from this problem is not the adaptation of the antireflection desin at the substrate index but the adaption at the mechanical and thermal properties of these substrates. The caoting labs influence at the complete system is more or less reduced only by the antireflection system. The substrate‐ and hardcoat material could be influenced only by the “world player” for ophthalmic systems. All the small and middle size coating labs worldwide must buy the substrates‐ and the hardcoat materials and have to accept the quality. The only exertion of influence is in the selection of film materials for the AR‐coating and the process technology. The right choise of coating material in quality, form and costs is crucial for a high quality AR‐ coating. A multitude of factors must be considered for the selection of the adequate material.     

High-Pressure (up to 140 MPa) Dynamic Viscosity of the Methane and Toluene System: Measurements and Comparative Study of Some Representative Models

The dynamic viscosity of toluene and methane mixtures containing 25.03, 37.19, 49.95, 64.11, and 95.00 mol% methane has been measured using a falling-body viscometer. The measurements (280 data points) have been performed in the temperature range 293.15 to 373.15 K and at pressures up to 140 MPa. The data have been discussed in the framework of recent representative models (hard-sphere scheme, friction theory, and free-volume model) as well as with simple mixing laws and empirical models (particularly the LBC model and the self-referencing model) used in the literature. This comparative study shows that the average absolute deviation of the models is between 4.9 and 26.8%, and the maximum deviation is between 11.6 and 49.5%.
