A numerical study of the effects of transients and variable properties on single droplet evaporation into an infinite stagnant gas is presented. Sample calculations are reported for octane droplets, initially at 300°K with Ro = 0·1, 0·5, 2·5 × 10?4m, evaporating into air at temperatures and pressures in the ranges 600–2000°K and 1–10 atm, respectively. It is found that initial size Ro is eliminated from the problem on scaling time with respect to R20 and that the evaporative process becomes quasi-steady with (, as suggested by experiment. Comparisons of solutions using various reference property schemes with those for variable properties show that best agreement obtains using a simple rule wherein properties are evaluated at and . Stem cells in the intestinal epithelium give rise to enterocytes, goblet cells, enteroendocrine cells, and Paneth cells. Each of these cell lines plays a role in cytoprotection of the intestinal mucosa. In particular, it has been demonstrated that mature enterocytes can act as antigen presenting cells. Parenteral and enteral nutrition are used to nourish critically ill patients. However, these regimens are unfortunately associated with gut atrophy. Glutamine, the preferred intestinal nutrient, reverses this gut atrophy and plays a key role in maintaining the barrier function of the gut. Specific nutrients (putrescine, spermidine, spermine) have been used to modulate intestinal adaption. In addition, ornithine has been shown to act as a regulator of intestinal adaption. Actinoplanic acids A and B are macrocyclic polycarboxylic acids that are potent reversible inhibitors of farnesyl-protein transferase. Actinoplanic acids A and B were isolated from Actinoplanes sp. MA 7066 while actinoplanic acid B was isolated from both MA 7066 and Streptomyces sp. MA 7099. Actinoplanic acids A and B are competitive with respect to farnesyl diphosphate and are selective inhibitors of farnesyl-protein transferase because they do not inhibit geranylgeranyl-protein transferase type 1 or squalene synthase. Diagnosis of developmental speech and language disorders in accordance with the ICD-10 is to be based on the psychometric assessment of speech and language performance. In the present study the clinical validity of the Heidelberger Sprachentwicklungstest (HSET) for diagnosing expressive language disorders was assessed by comparing HSET subtest results for 92 children aged 4 to 10 years who had various speech and language disorders with the children's scores on another language test, a cognitive test and clinical findings. The HSET scores differed considerably from the clinical ratings of the severity of the language disturbance. The correlations between the HSET scores and the score on the other language test was also low. Although the correlations of the HSET scores with the performance IQ was low, the correlations with the verbal IQ were high. The implications of these findings for the use of the HSET in diagnosing children with language impairments are discussed. 相似文献

STUDY HYPOTHESIS: Concentrated aqueous solutions of hydroxocobalamin (OHCob) are given intravenously for the treatment of cyanide poisoning. Because OHCob solutions are intensely red and have peak light absorptions at 352 nm and 525 nm, we investigated whether the presence of OHCob in serum would interfere with various automated, colorimetric chemistry measurements. DESIGN: Selected serum chemistry colorimetric measurements were compared in seven patients, using their own serum as control, with serum containing OHCob at the following concentrations: 100 mg/L, 500 mg/L, and 1,000 mg/L. These concentrations are in the range achieved with therapeutic doses of OHCob when given for cyanide poisoning. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Statistically significant alterations in serum values for aspartate aminotransferase, total bilirubin, creatinine, magnesium, and iron were seen in the presence of OHCob. CONCLUSION: The presence of OHCob in serum interferes with several chemistry methodologies, and such interference should be anticipated when this antidote is used. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to examine the immunotoxicological effects of the methyl-carbamate pesticide carbaryl via the oral, dermal, or inhalation routes. Male CD rats were exposed to carbaryl 5 d/wk for a 2-wk period. During nose-only inhalation exposures, rats received either 36, 137, or 335 mg/m3 carbaryl in acetone for 6 h. Air only and acetone/air controls were run concurrently. Orally exposed animals received either 1 ml corn oil or 10, 25, or 50 mg/kg carbaryl, while dermally exposed animals received either 2 ml acetone or 100, 500, or 1000 mg/kg carbaryl on their dorsal flank for 6 h. Four days prior to sacrifice, animals from all exposure groups were injected iv with 2 x 10(8) sheep red blood cells (SRBC). The primary immunoglobulin M (IgM) humoral immune response to SRBC was then assessed by measuring SRBC-specific antibody-forming cells (AFC) and levels of serum anti-SRBC IgM antibody, respectively, using the hemolytic plaque assay and an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Individual body weights, spleen, thymus, and liver weights, spleen cell number, and red and white blood cell (RBC, WBC) counts were obtained for each animal. Following nose-only inhalation exposures, dose-dependent decreases in thymus weights, spleen cell number, AFC/spleen, AFC/10(6) splenocytes, and serum levels of SRBC-specific IgM antibody were observed. Significant decreases of 33, 57, and 22% in spleen cell number, AFC/spleen, and thymus weight, respectively, were found at the 335 mg/m3 exposure level. Animals exposed orally to 25 mg/kg carbaryl had a 34% decrease in WBC counts. A 34% decrease in WBC and a 13% increase in RBC counts were observed at the 50 mg/kg oral dose. Significant decreases in liver weights ranging from 11 to 13% were found at all oral exposure levels. Dermal exposure to carbaryl revealed no significant toxicological effects. Results indicate that humoral immune suppression was observed following inhalation, but not following oral or dermal exposures to carbaryl. Immunotoxicological studies evaluating pesticides need to consider relevant exposure routes and dosages for appropriate risk assessment procedures and exposure limits to be established. 相似文献

In 12 depressed inpatients referred for bilateral electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), each patient was titrated at the first treatment session by using an ascending method-of-limits procedure with a step-wise increase in pulse frequency (frequency titration) or train duration (duration titration). At the second treatment session, seizure threshold was redetermined by using the method (frequency or duration titration) not used at the first treatment. Frequency or duration was maintained at the lowest level when the other parameter was titrated. Seizure threshold was significantly lower with duration titration (mean, 90 mC; SD, 27.3) than frequency titration (mean, 114 mC; SD, 35.6; p = 0.03). On average, patients in the duration-titration group required 1.2 (SD, 0.6) subconvulsive stimulations before a seizure was elicited, and patients in the frequency-titration group required 1.7 (SD, 0.9) subconvulsive stimulations before a seizure was elicited, a nonsignificant difference. These findings suggest that to elicit a seizure during ECT, increasing train duration may be slightly more efficient than increasing frequency. Basic and other clinical research findings indicate that increasing pulse width may be an inefficient way to elicit a seizure. Therefore the following sequence in the determination of seizure threshold is worth considering when using dose-titration or related techniques: the train duration should be increased first before increasing pulse frequency, and the decision to increase pulse width should be reserved for patients who do not seize at the maximal duration and frequency settings.
