Severe heart failure is increasingly being managed by cardiac transplantation, and in some cases mechanical support devices serve as destination therapies. Left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) were approved for destination therapy for end stage heart failure patients before the more advanced total artificial heart modality became available. One common complication of mechanical assist device placement is acute kidney injury. Historically, patients with mechanical support devices have had to have inpatient hemodialysis until combined heart kidney transplant. Though, some units have started accepting LVAD patients in outpatient dialysis clinics. The cost of in center hemodialysis remains high and home dialysis modalities are becoming increasingly popular. We report the first patient with an LVAD to undergo training and successful home hemodialysis while awaiting combined heart kidney transplantation.  相似文献

Forecasting on success or failure of software has become an interesting and, in fact, an essential task in the software development industry. In order to explore the latest data on successes and failures, this research focused on certain questions such as is early phase of the software development life cycle better than later phases in predicting software success and avoiding high rework? What human factors contribute to success or failure of a software? What software practices are used by the industry practitioners to achieve high quality of software in their day-to-day work? In order to conduct this empirical analysis a total of 104 practitioners were recruited to determine how human factors, misinterpretation, and miscommunication of requirements and decision-making processes play their roles in software success forecasting. We discussed a potential relationship between forecasting of software success or failure and the development processes. We noticed that experienced participants had more confidence in their practices and responded to the questionnaire in this empirical study, and they were more likely to rate software success forecasting linking to the development processes. Our analysis also shows that cognitive bias is the central human factor that negatively affects forecasting of software success rate. The results of this empirical study also validated that requirements’ misinterpretation and miscommunication were the main causes behind software systems’ failure. It has been seen that reliable, relevant, and trustworthy sources of information help in decision-making to predict software systems’ success in the software industry. This empirical study highlights a need for other software practitioners to avoid such bias while working on software projects. Future investigation can be performed to identify the other human factors that may impact software systems’ success.  相似文献

Solubility and quality of actomyosin play crucial roles during storage and processing of a particular muscle type. We report here the effect of low intensity (20 kHz) ultrasonication on the solubility and some other biochemical properties of the actomyosin isolated from chicken breast muscle. Although there was an overall enhancement in the solubility of actomyosin during sonication, the major increase of ~61.55% occurred at 0.2M NaCl after 10–12 min of exposure. The distinctive feature of sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoretic (SDS-PAGE) profiles of this fraction was the presence of free or non-interacting actin in considerable amount. Even at higher salt concentrations (0.4 and 0.5M NaCl), the protein solubility was almost twice as high as that of the corresponding controls. At low salt concentrations (<0.3 M NaCl or KCl) where the protein solubility was high, Ca2+-, K+(EDTA)- and Mg2+-ATPase activities were low. However, a remarkable increase in each of the enzymatic activities occurred at the salt concentrations higher than 0.3 M. More importantly, the high level of Mg2+-ATPase strongly indicated that actomyosin was reconstituted. The ultraviolet spectra also supported the reconstitution of actomyosin at high salt concentrations. These data suggested that ultrasonication caused conformational changes which modified properties of myosin and actin affecting the intermolecular relationships within actomyosin complex. The shift in the solubility and functional modifications of sonicated actomyosin provide some basis to explain the processing behavior of sonicated poultry meat. In addition, the low frequency sonication may be suggested as a non-destructive method to compare actomyosin extracted from various sources.  相似文献

We have developed a low-cost buried-mesa avalanche photodiode (APD) primarily targeted for 2.5-Gb/s lightwave applications. These APDs are made by a simple batch process that produces a robust and reliable device with potentially high yield and thus low cost. The entire base structure of our InGaAs-InP APD is grown in one epitaxial step and the remaining process consists of four simple steps including a mesa etch, one epitaxial overgrowth, isolation, and metallization. Buried-mesa APDs fabricated in this way show high uniform gain that rises smoothly to breakdown with increasing reverse bias. When biased to operate at a gain of 10, these unoptimized devices show dark current less than 20 nA, excess noise factor less than 5, and a 3-dB bandwidth of about 4 GHz. With a 1550-nm laser modulated at 2488 Mb/s, a maximum sensitivity of -327 dBm was obtained with an optical receiver using one such APD, without antireflection coatings. These APD's not only demonstrate excellent device characteristics but also high reliability under rigorous stress testing. This article aimed to assess the anti‐inflammatory and anticancer potential of water‐soluble peptide (WSP) extracts from buffalo and cow milk Cheddar cheeses. Anti‐inflammatory activity was evaluated on the basis of nitric oxide (NO) production in lipopolysaccharide‐stimulated macrophage (RAW‐264.7) cells. A cell viability assay, cell cycle arrest and apoptosis were performed to explore anticancer activity in a colon cancer model (HT‐29). The WSP extracts of both Cheddar cheeses effectively inhibited NO production in activated macrophages. Maximum growth inhibition was observed in the HT‐29 cells at concentrations of 400 and 500 μg/mL. A significant increase in cell population at G0/G1 phase of the cell cycle was observed. Moreover, the WSP extracts also induced extensive apoptosis in colon cancer cells.  相似文献

The anisotropic grooves in a microchannel induce spiral circulation around the flow axis. The stretch and fold of the streams result in a passive mixing. This article describes the effectiveness of induced crossflow, arising from the grooves, placed at the floor of the microchannel. The results from numerical simulation show the extent of local mixing achieved at various positions around the groove. The emphasis here is to understand the mixing when the two streams enter the channel, and displace air while flowing alongside each other. Microchannels with slanted grooves and staggered herringbone type grooves are considered here. The FLUENT 6.2 software and the Open FOAM software were used for the simulation. The latter was primarily utilized for tracking of the interface when a liquid slug displaced air from the micromixer. At a Reynold’s number of about 1.0, low velocity pockets could be identified near the two ends of the ridges. These pockets did not support crossflow and mixing. The herringbone type micromixer was found to have the best mixing effectiveness, when the advection dominates mixing. This advantage is mostly lost at the higher values of diffusivity, as a crossflow became less important for mixing. These observations were made when one of the streams is 1.5 times more viscous than the other, and the mixture-rule governed the viscosity of the mixed stream. When the liquid front enters the microchannel for the first time, the front had to displace air from the channel. At first, the upper part of the channel was swept. This was immediately followed by the sweeping of the groove-part in the floor. Higher hydraulic resistance in the grooves resulted in this non-uniform movement of the front. The co-flow of streams could either be continuous over the entire length of the channel, or in the form of slugs that maintained an interface with air. At a particular position in the channel, the extents of mixing were compared for the two modes of co-flow. The extent of mixing was found smaller in the slug, next to the interface with air. Lack of axial dispersion with preceding liquid stream seems to be the reason for this trend.  相似文献
