This paper illustrates how hidden details in garment design may reveal important clues about the motives of the wearer or designer that are of considerable cultural relevance. We suggest these hidden design features may reflect key psychological factors previously not considered. We illustrate this by doing a multilevel analysis of two important sixteenth century examples of Ottoman court clothing from the Topkapi Palace Museum. We show that these garments contain early examples of the use of “enclothed cognition” where the designs themselves are likely to have influenced the mind of the wearer. We suggest that the historical-social analysis of clothing may benefit from considering the concealed, as well as the explicit, psychologically relevant design features. We suggest that psychosocial interpretations of clothing may help further our understanding of textile and apparel design more generally, even within an historical context. 相似文献

Summary Gas chromatographic and gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric examination of the aroma components of canned plums obtained by both atmospheric distillation and headspace techniques showed them to be both quantitatively and qualitatively different from those of fresh plums. 25 components were identified, the major ones being 3-hydroxy-butan-2-one, benzaldehyde, nonanal and 2-furaldehyde. Benzaldehyde and nonanal together with benzyl acetate are believed to make a significant contribution to the aroma of canned plums.

Zusammenfassung Gaschromatographische und gaschromatographische-massenspektrometrische Analysen zeigten, daß die Aromastoffe der dosenkonservier ten Pflaumen, sowohl durch atmosphärische Destillation als auch nach der Kopfraum-Technik erhalten, quantitativ sowie qualitativ verschieden von denen der frischen Pflaumen sind. Es wurden 25 Komponenten identifiziert, darunter als Hauptbestandteile 3-Hydroxy-butan-2-on, Benzaldehyd, Nonanal und 2-Furfurol. The antioxidant activities of crude methanolic extract (CME) and its fractions using ethyl acetate (EAF), hexane (HF) and water (WF) of black cumin seedcake were investigated. DPPH radical scavenging activity, β-carotene–linoleate bleaching, and inhibition of corn oil oxidation were used to evaluate the antioxidant capacity. The total phenolics were found to be 78.8, 27.8, 32.1 and 12.1 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/g in EAF, CME, WF and HF, respectively. The CME and EAF exhibited the highest DPPH followed by WF and HF. The extract/fractions showed high effect on reducing the oxidation of β-carotene. The effect of extract/fractions on the oxidative stability of corn oil at 70 °C was tested in the dark and compared with butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA). The oil peroxide and anisidine values were generally lower with addition of PRFs in comparison to a control. The predominant phenolic compounds identified by HPLC–DAD in CME and WF of black cumin seedcake were hydroxybenzoic, syringic and p-cumaric acids. 相似文献

The antimicrobial potential of whey protein isolate hydrolyzed by gastrointestinal enzymes was determined by attempting to identify and characterize the antimicrobial peptides responsible. While tryptic and chymotryptic hydrolysates did not show antibacterial activity, whey proteins hydrolyzed for 45–90 min by pepsin exhibited significant activity. Fractionation of 60-min hydrolysate by reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography yielded 5 fractions that were antibacterial, with minimum inhibitory concentrations comprised between 20 and 35 μg/mL. These fractions contained short peptides not previously identified as antimicrobial. Fragment 14–18 (KVAGT) of β-lactoglobulin is very close to a sequence previously identified as antibacterial and is found in antimicrobial sequences of diverse origin. Five other peptides derived from β-lactoglobulin, and one fragment from α-lactalbumin (f117–121, KVGIN), were also identified as antibacterial. The identified peptides do not match pepsin action exactly, indicating modified proteolysis of unknown origin. Protein by-products of the dairy industry offer potential for large-scale production of antimicrobial peptides. 相似文献

This longitudinal prospective study aimed to determine the prevalence of oropharyngeal colonization by C. albicans in children with cystic fibrosis (CF), and observe the continuity of candidal colonization and the changes in production of virulence factors, susceptibility to antifungal agents and RAPD patterns of the isolates. Thirty‐seven children with CF were followed‐up for oropharyngeal C. albicans colonization for 18 months. The colonization rate was detected in 54%. All isolates were susceptible to amphotericin B, but those isolated from one patient were resistant to fluconazole. Biofilm production, secretory acid proteinase, phospholipase and esterase activity rates were 30%, 60%, 75% and 80%, respectively. RAPD analysis with the primers OPE‐03 and OPE‐18 was performed for genotyping. RAPD patterns of the strains isolated from the same patient were related to each other, whereas they were not related with other strains isolated from different patients. Two C. albicans strains isolated from the same patient were found to be unrelated to one another. As a result, long‐lasting colonization of the oropharyngeal mucosa of children with CF by endogenous C. albicans isolates having the same RAPD pattern was demonstrated. The effect of a yoghurt supplement containing Bifidobacterium pseudocatenulatum G4 or Bifidobacterium longum BB536 on plasma lipids, lipid peroxidation and the faecal excretion of bile acids was examined in rats fed a cholesterol-enriched diet. After 8 weeks, the rats in the positive control (PC) group who were fed the cholesterol-enriched diet showed significant increases in plasma total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and malondialdehyde (MDA). However, groups fed a cholesterol-enriched diet supplemented with yoghurt containing B. pseudocatenulatum G4 or B. longum BB536 had significantly lower plasma TC, LDL-C, very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) cholesterol, and MDA than had the PC group after 8 weeks of treatment. In addition, faecal excretion of bile acids was markedly increased in the rats fed the yoghurt containing B. pseudocatenulatum G4 or B. longum BB536 as compared to the PC and NC groups. 相似文献

The aim of this paper was to predict the colour strength of viscose knitted fabrics by using fuzzy logic (FL) model based on dye concentration, salt concentration and alkali concentration as input variables. Moreover, the performance of fuzzy logic (FL) model is compared with that of artificial neural network (ANN) model. In addition, same parameters and data have been used in ANN model. From the experimental study, it was found that dye concentration has the main and greatest effects on the colour strength of viscose knitted fabrics. The coefficient of determination (R2), root mean square (RMS) and mean absolute errors (MAE) between the experimental colour strength and that predicted by FL model are found to be 0.977, 1.025 and 4.61%, respectively. Further, the coefficient of determination (R2), root mean square (RMS) and mean absolute errors (MAE) between the experimental colour strength and that predicted by ANN model are found to be 0.992, 0.726 and 3.28%, respectively. It was found that both ANN and FL models have ability and accuracy to predict the fabric colour strength effectively in non-linear domain.
