A new approach to improve the high-voltage cyclic performance of Li-rich layered cathode material by electrochemical pre-treatment

Lithium-rich nickel–manganese–cobalt oxide, Li[Ni_0.17Li_0.2Co_0.07Mn_0.56]O₂, was prepared by a co-precipitation method, and its cyclic behavior at a high potential was investigated. The as-prepared material shows a rapid capacity fading in its initial several cycles when it was operated above 4.5 V, which could be significantly improved through a pre-cycling treatment. Its reversible capacity in the range of 4.8–2 V could be increased from 200 to 250 mAh g⁻¹ after 50 cycle through a stepped pre-cycling treatment.     

The Direct Spectroscopy of Positronium Hyperfine Structure Using a Sub-THz Gyrotron

Positronium is an ideal system for research on Quantum Electrodynamics (QED), especially in a bound state. A discrepancy of 3.9 standard deviations has been found between the measured hyperfine structure (Ps-HFS) and the QED predictions. This may be due to the contribution of unknown new physics or common systematic effects in previous measurements, in all of which the Zeeman effect was used. We propose a new method to directly measure the Ps-HFS using a high power gyrotron. We compare two resonators which have been developed to supply sufficient power to drive the direct transition, a Fabry-Pérot resonator and a ring resonator with a diffraction grating. We plan to perform first direct measurement of Ps-HFS within the next six months.     

Replication of rat coronaviruses in intestinal cell line, RCN-9, derived from F344 rats

To examine the susceptibility of the epithelial cell line to rat coronavirus (RCV), we inoculated sialodacryoadenitis virus and Parker's RCV into five cell lines; JTC-19, rat L2, LLC, RCN-9 and LBC cells originating in the lungs, intestines and mammary tumors of rodents. Both RCVs were replicated in LBC and RCN-9 cells, but not in the others. The infectivity titers of both RCVs grown in RCN-9 cells were significantly higher than those in LBC cells in every passage (2.5-3.9 log rate). Both RCVs replicated in LBC cells showed higher tropism to RCN-9 cells than to LBC cells, suggesting that RCN-9 cells are more suitable for the replication of RCVs than LBC cells. The RCN-9 cell line would be useful for the investigation of RCV infection in rodents.     

Adsorption and photocatalytic decomposition of methylene blue on mesoporous metallosilicates

Mesoporous silica and mesoporous metallosilicates with Al, Ti and Fe as foreign metal species were successfully synthesized by the rapid room temperature method. Mesoporous metallosilicates with low contents of foreign metals possessed high surface area (S_a), large mesopore volume (V_mp) and highly ordered hexagonal mesoporous structure. Increases in foreign metal contents caused disordering the mesoporous structures and lowering the S_a and V_mp values. Bleaching of aqueous methylene blue (MB) by mesoporous silica and metallosilicates was investigated. Mesoporous aluminosilicate and ferrosilicate with cation-exchangeable ability showed the excellent property for the adsorption of MB of cationic dye, while mesoporous ferrosilicate and titanosilicate which absorbed UV lights catalyzed the photocatalytic decomposition of MB under UV-illumination.     

Simultaneously found transient hypothyroidism due to Hashimoto's thyroiditis, autoimmune hepatitis and isolated ACTH deficiency after cessation of glucocorticoid administration

We present a 42-year-old woman with concomitant transient hypothyroidism due to Hashimoto's thyroiditis, autoimmune hepatitis and isolated ACTH deficiency. Two months after ceasing prednisolone (5 mg/day) for uveitis, she was discovered incidentally to have liver dysfunction with hypergammaglobulinemia, later diagnosed as autoimmune hepatitis by histological examination of the biopsied liver. In addition, primary hypothyroidism due to Hashimoto's thyroiditis and secondary hypocortisolism due to isolated ACTH deficiency were revealed by endocrinological examination. Although not treated, her liver dysfunction and hypothyroid state recovered simultaneously, and the isolated ACTH deficiency was restored six months later. We concluded, after a needle-biopsy of the thyroid, that the transient hypothyroidism was due to Hashimoto's thyroiditis and the reversible ACTH deficiency was probably due to autoimmune hypophysitis. This case shows that cessation of steroid treatment may transiently exacerbate the polyglandular autoimmune syndrome.     

Time‐frequency analysis of a pressure wave caused by impulse tree using wavelet transform

This paper describes results of time‐frequency analysis of a pressure wave caused by impulse tree extension using wavelet transform. Pressure waves were measured by a piezo sensor which was located on the back of the plane electrode when high‐voltage nanosecond pulses were applied to a point electrode in a low‐density polyethylene block. Frequency of the pressure wave from induced charges on the plane electrode was higher than that of the pressure wave from tree. In addition, the frequency of the pressure wave from tree tended to decrease with increasing gap length because of the dispersion of the pressure wave during its propagation. When a large tree extension occurred between a 5‐mm gap, pressure waves of about 10 MHz propagated from the tree tip and a pressure wave of 1 MHz propagated from the tree stem. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Banet — a local area network for distributed data processing

A broadcast architecture network (Banet) suitable for distributed data processing is proposed. One feature of Banet is that the broadcast-within-a-group function is supported not only by the datalink level but by the transport or session-level network structure. The commitment control scheme is included in the network protocol. Design goals, physical structure and protocols are discussed.     

New oxygen donors formed at 700 °C in silicon

Donor formation at 700 °C was studied by infrared absorption, etching, transmission electron microscope, resistivity, and spreading resistance measurements in Czochralski grown silicon. The donor concentration is related to the oxygen-precipitate density, oxygen reduction, and carbon reduction by annealing at 700 °C. The donor distribution corresponds to the distribution of oxygen precipitates observed after annealing. The proposed donor is an oxygen precipitate nucleated at a carbon site. The oxygen-related donor formation not only occurs in the bulk of samples but also in the denuded zone. Donor-related microdefects do not seriously influence the threshold voltage in metal-oxide-silicon field-effects-transistors, but are expected to decrease carrier lifetime at the surface of the denuded zone.
