Underground construction is notorious for high cost and time overruns. This is probably inherent in the nature of the work, which usually involves high risks on the part of both the employer and the contractor, in view of the extent of the uncertainties with regard to such factors as geology, appropriate design and performance. The main civil works constructed for South Africa's Palmiet Pumped Storage Scheme between 1983 and 1987 have demonstrated that with early identification and proper management of the risks and costs, the value of cost and time overruns can be curtailed to a very large extent. This paper describes broadly the process adopted on the project, focusing in particular on the successful management at Palmiet of the financial risks pertaining to the cost of the contractor's overheads, establishment, supervision and plant in a contract that was known to be subject to variations, extensions and delays. This was achieved by appropriate scheduling, provisions for payment and on-site management of these cost items, usually described broadly as the Preliminary and General (P & G) Items. Two approximate yield criteria are proposed for reinforced concrete cylindrical shell element. Three lower bound solutions are developed for cylindrical shell roofs with free longitudinal edges. Spatial competition and regulatory change in the grain handling and transportation system in western Canada 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The grain handling and transportation system (GHTS) has been a defining component of the western Canadian economy since the
early part of the last century. Only two major railways serve the grain handling industry, so the potential for the exercise
of market power in transportation appears to be significant. In fact, spatially oriented regulations applicable to railways
exist in Canada to mitigate this, but to date they have not often been used by shippers. While the reasons for this are not
completely clear, we suggest that the regulations are now inadequate for the current state of the GHTS. Using a unique data
set from the year 2000, we assess the effect on the grain handling industry of modifications to these regulations, and find
that significant gains for shippers from these modifications are possible. These gains are computed to be on the order of
C$10–15 million per year for grain shippers alone.

Water levels in tidal rivers are subject to the influence of both fluvial and tidal factors. The interaction between these factors is rendered more complex in regions affected by typhoons, which typically result in the combined occurrence of heavy rainfall and high sea levels.
Previous studies have outlined an analytical approach for calculating design water levels based on dividing the fluvial and tidal series into a typhoon and a non-typhoon component. This paper illustrates the steps involved in the analytical approach and describes its application to drainage basins in Hong Kong.
The approach provides a practical means for calculating design water levels, and is recommended for final design purposes. The results of using the full analysis may be approximated by using a sub-set of analytical results, and should prove satisfactory for the purposes of outline design. 相似文献

In this paper experiments are described in a bio-disc pilot plant. A new method has been developed for a reproducible measurement of the thickness of the waterfilm on the rotating discs. The results were used to calculate the oxygen transfer coefficient into water (KL). The values of KL, calculated in this way, appeared to be considerably higher than experimental KL-values, which is mainly due to the fact that the water layer on the rotating disc is outdistanced by the disc. Weak base phenol formaldehyde anion exchange resins were found to have an excellent capacity for removing the anionic organic species benzenesulfonate (BS), p-toluenesulfonate (PTS) and dodecylbenzenesulfonate (DBS) from pH 2 and 4 solutions. The capacity for DBS was generally greater than that of activated carbon and significantly greater than that of a polystyrene-divinylbenzene resin with no ion exchange functional groups. The maximum capacity of the weak base resins appeared to be limited by the exchange capacity of the resin. The mechanism of removal was strongly indicated as being either ion exchange at the amine functional groups in the acid form, or uptake of a proton by the amine groups in the free base form with the organic anion as the associated counter ion. Increasing concentrations of Cl− decreased the amount of organic anion that could be sorbed.The swelling of one of the resins, Duolite A-7, also had a marked effect on its sorption capacity. The pores of the acid chloride or acid organic anion form of the resin were apparently larger than those of the free base form; thus, as conversion of the resin to the acid form took place, a greater amount of uptake was observed. The effect of swelling on the capacity of Duolite S-37 was much less, apparently owing to its larger pore structure, but its capacity for DBS at low pH was lower than that for A-7 because of its lower nitrogen content. Also, BS and DBS were easily removed from the weak base resins by washing them with NaOH. Four bed volumes of 1 m NaOH gave essentially complete regeneration of BS saturated A-7. 相似文献
