Digital cellular-its roots and its future

Cellular radio started in the early 1980s by using analog technologies. Research in voice coding, modulation, and channel coding resulted in second-generation cellular radio based on digital technologies, which were introduced in the early 1990s. These were all based on advanced time division multiple access technology, resulting in better capacity and lower cost. Today, these digital technologies-based on the Global System for Mobility, digital Advanced Mobile Phone System, and personal digital cellular-have more than 100 million subscribers worldwide. The next step is to introduce wide-band packet services for wireless Internet up to 2 Mb/s. These so-called third-generation systems (Universal Mobile Telecommunications Services, IMT2000) are planned to be introduced in the early 2000s     

Dissolved organic carbon dynamics in the upper rhone: The influence of side-arms?

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) dynamics were investigated over a two year period in the Upper Rhǒne River to examine the role of side-arms in providing DOC to the main channel in relation to discharge fluctuations, especially floods. Concentrations of DOC are shown to remain low in space and in time (average 1.5 mg ^?1) and to be more related to global hydrological events (precipitation) than to any local flushing for backwaters during floods. The results do not support the general assumption that side-arms are the providers of DOC to the main channel.     

The effects of cholecystokinin A and B receptor antagonists, devazepide and L 365260, on citalopram-induced decrease of exploratory behaviour in rat

The present study has been divided into two sets. In the first set, the aim of the experiments was to investigate the dose-response effect of selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor (SSRI) citalopram on rat exploratory behaviour in the elevated plus-maze. In the second set of experiments, the effect of cholecystokinin (CCK) CCKA and CCKB receptor antagonists, devazepide and L 365260, on citalopram-induced decrease of exploratory behaviour in the elevated plus-maze was studied. Citalopram (5 and 10 mg/kg) decreased the number of open and total arm entries, line crossings on open arms, and percentage of time spent exploring in open arm. Dose 15 mg/kg was without any effect on rat exploratory behaviour. Devazepide (0.01 and 1.0 mg/kg) failed to modify any of the citalopram-induced changes observed. L 365260 (1.0 mg/kg) reversed most of the effects of citalopram: the numbers of open and total arm entries, the number of line crossings, and the percentage of time spent exploring in open arms. L 365260 at dose level 0.01 mg/kg was ineffective. These results support the involvement of the CCKB receptor subtype in SSRI-induced anxiogenic-like effects in rodents.     

A medium-access control protocol for a cellular packet CDMAcarrying multirate traffic

We propose and evaluate a medium-access control (MAC) protocol for synchronous cellular packet direct-sequence code-division multiple-access (DS/CDMA). The protocol is designed for handling a variety of multimedia traffic types in an integrated wireless-access network (IWAN). For instance, the protocol is suited for carrying multiple traffic types of different priorities. An analytical model for the equilibrium state has been developed for the proposed protocol. A comparative evaluation of the protocol is done for three different radio frequency bandwidths currently under consideration for personal communication services (PCS), i.e., 1.25 MHz, 5 MHz, and 10 MHz. Our results demonstrate that the proposed protocol is both robust and flexible for the intended IWAN applications. It offers a significant multiplexing gain as the bandwidth increases     

Quantitative analysis of ephedrines in urine by HPLC

Simultaneous determination of six ephedrines in urine sample has been achieved by high performance liquid chromatography on a Lichrospher RP-18 column, using methylamphetamine as internal standard. The 6 ephedrines are well separated in 25 minutes with resolution better than 1.8. This method has high recovery, selectivity and reproducibility, and the linearity is satisfactory from 1.5 micrograms/ml to 25 micrograms/ml with correlation coefficients better than 0.999.     

The role of perspective in the accessibility of goals during reading.

An implicit assumption of several causal reasoning models is that readers adopt the goals of a narrative's protagonist during text comprehension. In apparent violation of this assumption, readers participating in Experiment 1 of the present study drew inferences relevant to a protagonist's goal even when that goal was already satisfied from the perspective of the protagonist. In Experiments 2 and 3, participants were explicitly asked to view the text situation from the point of view of the protagonist. In this case, the goals of the reader and the protagonist should be the same. In these experiments, participants focused on the goals of the protagonist only when those goals had not been satisfied from the perspective of the protagonist. These results are discussed in terms of reader- and character-based perspectives and in terms of text characteristics that cue perspective taking. Clinical study in epidural injection with lappaconitine compound for post-operative analgesia

In this study, the effect and side-effect of epidural injection with lappaconitine compound for post-operative analgesia was observed. One hundred and twenty patients were randomly divided into 4 groups. Lappaconitine compound (LB) consisted of 12 mg of lappaconitine and 22.5 mg of bupivacaine, was given to group A (the group of observation), and lappaconitine 12 mg, bupivacaine 22.5 mg and morphine 2 mg to group B, C and D respectively for control. All were given by epidural injection with single blind method during post-operative pain of incision operation. Result showed that the initiating of analgesia was quicker in group A and C than that in group B and D, and the efficacy was group D > A > C > B. There was significant difference between group A and B in the above two parameters, P < 0.01 and P < 0.05. The analgisia maintenence time of single injection was D > A > B > C, that of group D was significantly longer than that of group A (P < 0.01). It indicated that the epidural injection with LB was more rapid and potent than that with lappaconitine alone in post-operative analgesia, and the former had no side-effect, it was safer than morphine.     

Anomalies of the tracheobronchial tree in patients with esophageal atresia

Bone marrow examination revealed a lipid-laden histiocytosis in seven patients undergoing long-term total parenteral nutrition necessitated by extensive short-bowel surgical resection. Clinical abnormalities occurred during this treatment which required bone marrow examination. These included hepatosplenomegaly and peripheral blood cytopenia; the median time to the detection of these abnormalities was 64 months. The most striking change within the bone marrow was the presence of many pigment-laden histiocytes which had the typical morphology of sea-blue histiocytes seen in the so-called idiopathic sea-blue histiocyte syndrome. The occurrence of sea-blue histiocytosis in the bone marrow in association with long-term parenteral nutrition for short-bowel syndrome has not, to our knowledge, been reported previously and should now be considered in the differential diagnosis of bone marrow sea-blue histiocytosis.
