Induction of immune tolerance with heart-thymus composite allotransplantation in rats

Objective To study on the role of thymus transplantation for heart allograft in rats. Methods Vascularized heart-thymus combined transplantation was performed with microsurgical technique. Graft survival, histopathology, level of IL-2, IL-4 and its mRNA expression in serum and cardiac grafts were investigated. Results Heart-thymus combined transplantation achieved effect in the prolongation of cardiac graft survival with short-term administration of cyclosporine. Conclusions Vascularized thymus transplantation induced immune tolerance in thymectomized rats.

Effect of Processing Temperature on the Morphology of Silicon Carbide Whiskers

Two kinds of SiC whiskers were annealed at temperatures similar to those for the processing of ceramic matrix composites. The morphology and structure of the as-received and postannealed whiskers were investigated by SEM, TEM, and XRD, and the influence of processing temperature on the mechanical properties of ceramic matrix composites was discussed.     

Elevation of serum cholesterol levels in mice by the antioxidant butylated hydroxyanisole

The food antioxidants butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) are structurally related to the hypocholesterolemic drug probucol. The purpose of this study was to determine if BHA can lower serum cholesterol levels as is observed with probucol. Treatment of mice with 0.75% BHA in their feed for 10 days resulted in a significant (P < or = 0.01) elevation of serum cholesterol levels. This effect contrasts with the cholesterol-lowering effect of probucol. Further, the degree of cholesterol elevation was comparable to that observed in mice administered 3% cholesterol in their feed for 7 days. The enzyme acyl CoA:cholesterol acyltransferase (ACAT) was decreased significantly (P < or = 0.01) in liver microsomes from BHA-treated mice. In contrast, hepatic microsomal ACAT activity was increased significantly (P < or = 0.01) in cholesterol-fed mice. These results suggested that the increased serum cholesterol observed in BHA-treated mice was not accompanied by an increase in hepatic cholesterol levels. Indeed, hepatic microsomal cholesterol levels were reduced in BHA-treated mice, but were increased significantly (P < or = 0.01) in cholesterol-fed mice. These results demonstrate that the common food additive BHA elevates serum cholesterol levels by a mechanism that apparently involves the decreased uptake of cholesterol by the liver.     

A reliable and manufacturable method to induce a stress of >1 GPa on a P-channel MOSFET in high volume manufacturing

This letter discusses a reliable and manufacturable integration technique to induce greater than 1 GPa of stress into a p-channel MOSFET, which will be required to increase the drive current beyond 1 mA//spl mu/m at the sub-90-nm process generation. Uniaxial compressive stress is introduced into the p-channel by both a selective deposition of SiGe in the source/drain and an engineered 2.5-GPa compressively stressed nitride. The highest to date compressively stressed SiN film is obtained by heavy ion bombardment during the deposition of the film.     

Insulating safety analysis of the hot-line sweeping robot

This paper presents a method of calculating the insulating safety distances for hot-line working robots at high voltage when dielectric is adulterated with conducts. Also, finite element method is adopted to calculate the electric field strength to find whether it is beyond the critical. The above methods have been applied to analyze the insulating safety of the robot for hot-line sweeping post insulators in a 220 KV substation. They have also been testified by experimentations.

En/Decoder for Spectral Phase-Coded OCDMA System Based on Amplitude Sampled FBG

A novel en/decoder for spectral phase-coded optical code-division multiple-access system based on amplitude sampled fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is proposed. Both equivalent chirp and equivalent phase shift are achieved by amplitude sampling. Compared with previous en/decoder based on step chirped FBG, it is easier to fabricate. The performance of the proposed en/decoder is verified by both numerical simulation and experimental demonstration.
