A cathode readout gas sampling calorimeter with conductive plastic tubes

We constructed and tested a prototype gas sampling electromagnetic calorimeter of the Pb-proportional tube sandwich type. The calorimeter uses conductive plastic tubes and cathode pad readout with a tower structure which resulted in reasonable energy and spatial resolutions for electrons in the momentum range 0.5–4.0 GeV/c; $\text{σ}{}_{\mathrm{E}}\text{E =}\text{21\%}\text{(E(}\text{GeV}\text{)}\text{)}{}^{\mathrm{<mtext>1</mtext><mtext>2</mtext>}}\text{, σ}{}_{\mathrm{x}}\text{= 6}\text{mm}\text{(at 3 GeV}$/c). This paper describes the test and the performance studied under various conditions.     

Set-covering diagnostic expert system for psychiatric disorders: the third world context

This paper presents an implementation of the set-covering model for diagnosing psychiatric disorders. Such a model is useful as the basis for the inference mechanism of an expert system in that it provides a satisfactory solution to the difficult problem of multiple simultaneous disorders. The set covers have been formed through the 'diagonal search method' in which the combination of an element with the rest of the elements along the diagonals in the combination matrix was found to be adequate. 'Abductive logic' has been used to reach the possible final solution. Another feature of this expert system is its elicitation system. Provision has been made in the expert system for observations to be made and questions to be asked of the patient in difficult-to-elicit psychiatric signs. It makes this expert system usable by the non-expert clinicians. This has been specially designed in the context of third-world conditions. The system has been tested on cases given in the DSM-III case book with 100% success. However, the system's knowledge should be expanded and refined if it is to be used in psychiatric clinical practice.     

Fabrication of a poly-Si thin-film transistor with storage capacitor

The fabrication process of a low-temperature poly-Si thin-film transistor (TFT) with a storage capacitor was studied. The atmospheric-pressure chemical-vapour deposited SiO₂ protected the buried indium tin oxide (ITO) from reduction by a pure H₂ plasma treatment that was essential for the effective improvement of the poly-Si TFT characteristics. Thus, a storage capacitor with an ITO (picture electrode)-SiO₂-ITO (buried common electrode) structure was successfully fabricated. The poly-Si TFT with a channel width/length W/L ratio of 5 drove a 3 pF storage capacitor in 2 μs, and it showed superior driverability for LCD use. The TFT also had good hold characteristics under illumination for the realization of grey-scale representation.     

Experimental Study of Porous Gel Sintering

Formation and disappearance of closed pores in silica gel during sintering were experimentally detected using a light-scattering technique. The disappearance of closed pores is strongly influenced by the atmosphere in which the gel is sintered.     

Prediction of the maximum spoutable height in spout-fluid beds

The development of the semi-theoretical correlation in Hadzisdmajlovic et al. (1983) for predicting the maximum spoutable height in a spout-fluid bed, is observed to involve certain discrepancies. Based on their experimental data, a new correlation is proposed.     

A prolog based expert system for the allocation of quality assurance program resources

The worldwide proliferation of fraudulent materials has brought about the need for a new approach to the control of purchased material quality. Nuclear power, defense, aerospace and many other industries are affected by the supply of poor quality clones that presume to be original replacement parts. Safety considerations abound as these highly defective materials are used in systems that are critical to the preservation of human lives. Commonly utilized quality assurance programs have not effectively stopped the influx of fraudulent materials. These programs fail to concentrate inspection efforts on materials and inspection attributes that would effectively prevent the acceptance of fraudulent materials. herein a solution is presented to this problem in the form of an expert system application. Information commonly available in industry is formulated into a knowledge based system wherein advisories are given to the user regarding key purchased material receipt inspection strategies.     

Semiconductor-insulator structures in the phototargets of vidicons sensitive in the middle infrared region of the spectrum

The kinetics of electronic processes in vidicon phototargets based on semiconductor-insulator structures with a narrow-gap semiconductor is considered taking into account charge drain in the insulator layer and relaxation of the nonequilibrium depletion region in the semiconductor layer. The integration time, threshold sensitivity, and resolution at various intensities of incident radiation are estimated.
