A Discfilter with 10 and 18 microm filter openings, respectively, was placed in parallel to a flotation plant for separation of biological flocs from a post-denitrifying Kaldnes Moving Bed Process, the last treatment step at the municipal wastewater treatment plant at Sj?unda, Malm?, Sweden. The effluent concentrations from the 10 and 18 microm filter were 2-5 and 2-8 mg SS L(-1), respectively, which is comparable to, or better than, the flotation plant. Comparison with experiences from activated sludge plants shows that the Discfilter works especially well after the Kaldnes process. Particle size distribution (PSD) studies show that particles larger than the filter openings of 10 and 18 microm are separated with approximately 90% efficiency, whereas most of the smaller particles pass the filter. This fact indicates that the major particle separation mechanism is physical blocking. These findings point to the possibility of improving the prediction of the separation efficiency by combining measurements of turbidity and suspended solids with particle size analysis. 相似文献

Exposure to hypercapnia and electrical stimulation of the carotid sinus nerve (CSN) has been shown to induce c-fos expression in several brain stem regions including the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS). To test whether the labeled neurons were activated directly by hypercapnia or secondarily via the carotid bodies (sinus nerve), adult rats were exposed to either air or 14-16% CO2 for 1 h. Experiments were done on eight groups: (1) exposure to air, (2) exposure to CO2, (3) chronic CSN denervation/CO2, (4) chronic unilateral CSN denervation/CO2, (5) chronic sham CSN denervation/CO2, (6) anesthetized/CO2, (7) anesthetized and acute vagotomy/CO2, and (8) premedicated with morphine, 10 mg s.c., 20 min before exposure to CO2. After exposure to CO2 or air the rats were anesthetized, perfused with 4% paraformaldehyde and the brains processed for immunohistochemical staining for c-fos protein using the PAP (i.e. peroxidase anti-peroxidase) technique. Labeled neurons in the area of the NTS in every second 50- "mu"m section were counted and their position plotted using a microscope and camera lucida attachment. Rats exposed to CO2 had a significantly greater number of labeled neurons in the NTS than those exposed to air. Other interventions, such as CSN denervation, surgery, anesthesia, vagotomy or injection of morphine did not significantly affect the level of c-fos expression in rats exposed to hypercapnia, indicative of central stimulation rather than secondary peripheral input. Extensive angiogenesis is a characteristic feature in the synovial tissue of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) from a very early stage of the disease onward and constitutes a crucial event for the development of the proliferative synovium. This process is markedly intensified in patients with prolonged disease duration, high disease activity, disease severity, and significant inflammatory cell infiltration. Angiogenesis is therefore an interesting target for the development of new therapeutic approaches as well as disease monitoring strategies in RA. To this end, nuclear imaging modalities represent valuable non-invasive tools that can selectively target molecular markers of angiogenesis and accurately and quantitatively track molecular changes in multiple joints simultaneously. Psychological processes may play a role in the evaluation of the effectiveness of exercise and subsequent food intake. In order to further investigate this phenomenon, the effects of the timing of exercise relative to an eating opportunity were evaluated. Female undergraduate participants who were of average weight and did not exercise regularly were randomly assigned to one of three conditions (exercise before eating [n = 10], exercise after eating [n = 11], or no exercise [n = 12]). Expectations of the effectiveness of the exercise, value of dieting, and intake were assessed. Participants who exercised after eating had higher expectations of the effectiveness of the exercise than those who exercised before eating, while those who exercised before eating reported valuing dieting more than controls. No effects on intake emerged; therefore, there appears to be a disconnect between dieting appraisals and actual eating behaviour. Glucoamylase has been covalently immobilized in controlled pore glass fibers packed parallel to the axis of a tubular reactor. Flow kinetic studies have been carried out for a range of flow rates and substrate concentrations at 50°C and pH 4.5. Diffusion control has been found negligible with high flow rates and substrate concentrations. The apparent Michaelis constant was three orders of magnitude higher than that of the free enzyme. As flow rate and substrate concentration decrease, the extent of diffusion control increased up to a moderate degree. In this letter, the authors report a very high quantum efficiency of 91% for antireflection/high-reflection-coated GaInP-AlGaInP ridge waveguide laser diodes operating at 650 nm range. The laser structure was grown by solid-source molecular beam epitaxy. The laser diodes performed stable single-mode operation up to 60 mW. The noise figure degradation due to saturation by amplified spontaneous emission of high-gain 1310-nm polarization insensitive multiple-quantum-well optical amplifiers has been investigated systematically by studying amplifiers of different lengths. It is found that the intrinsic noise figure of 4 dB of a device with 20-dB single-pass gain is degraded to about 5 dB for a device having 36-dB single-pass gain. This degradation in noise figure is very modest, compared to results reported earlier for semiconductor optical amplifiers with bulk-gain media, illustrating the benefits of using a quantum-well gain medium in semiconductor optical amplifiers. 相似文献

A 1310-nm gain clamped semiconductor optical amplifier with amplitude modulation CATV-grade linearity at an output power of 8 mW is demonstrated for the first time. The InGaAsP multiquantum-well laser amplifier is equipped with distributed Bragg reflectors at each end to supply the feedback necessary for gain clamping. The TE optical gain of 21.3 dB is measured to be constant within 0.1 dB up to 25-mW signal output power. The static charge sensitive bed (SCSB) consists of a sensitive movement detector embedded in a mattress. When a subject rests on the bed, a single electrical signal, containing components reflective of cardiac, respiratory, and body movement related motion, is produced. This paper describes a digital signal processing technique to separate the BCG from the SCSB signal. An evaluation of this algorithm was conducted using recordings from normal volunteers. Comparisons with simultaneously recorded reference signals indicated that the algorithm performed satisfactorily in a laboratory environment. 相似文献
