Microflora of the nasal cavity and its sensitivity to antibiotics in patients with chronic rhinitis treated by cryotherapy

Cryotherapy is used in treatment of chronic rhinitis and pharyngitis. The effect of cryotherapy on the qualitative and quantitative composition of the microflora was studied. Staphylococci prevailed in the rhinitis patients, streptococci, Clebsiella and Neisseria being registered more rarely. The staphlococcal isolates were highly sensitive to monomycin, neomycin, erythromycin and levomycetin. The results of the dynamic study showed that the flora composition did not significantly change during cryotherapy and the sensitivity level of the staphylococcal isolates to the antibodies remained unchanged.     

Auditory evoked potentials during multichannel selective listening: role of pitch and localization cues

Auditory evoked potentials were recorded from subjects who listened selectively to tone pips arriving over one of three input channels. Their task was to detect occasional target tones of a slightly longer duration. In different runs the three channels were distinguished from one another by (a) pitch cues alone (800, 1,800, and 2,800 Hz), (b) localization cues alone (right ear, midline, ane left ear), and (c) both of these cues conjointly. In all three conditions the direction of attention was reflected in the amplitude of the N1 wave of the evoked potential, which was selectively enhanced to tones in the attended channel; tones in the central channels in the single-cue conditions, however, produced the least N1 lability and were the least discriminable. The N1 wave was interpreted as a sign of an initial stimulus set or filtering mode of selective attention, whereas a subsequent P3 wave was specifically associated with detections of the target stimuli.     

Fluidized-bed chlorination rates of australian rutile

Rates of chlorination of Australian rutile ore using 1) carbon monoxide and 2) coke as reducing agents have been investigated in a 4.75 cm diam fluidized bed reactor at temperatures in the range 1143 K to 1311K. Empirical equations are proposed for the rates of reaction of the ore in both the CO-C1₂ and C-Cl₂ systems.     

Prolonged and monosymptomatic dysphasic status epilepticus

Dysphasic seizures are an infrequent form of epilepsy, and their serial appearance as a partial status epilepticus is quite exceptional. The young patient reported here had a partial dysphasic status epilepticus of 3 weeks' duration without other temporal lobe seizures. Simultaneous serial electroencephalograms, tape recordings of the seizures, and repeated neuropsychologic ictal examinations permitted studies of increased impairment of neuropsychologic function on testing and the appearance of new irritative discharges on encephalography.     

Legg-Calvé-Perthes' disease. Morphological studies in two cases examined at necropsy

Specimens of femoral heads were studied at necropsy in two cases of Legg-Calve-Perthes' disease. One was that of a boy aged four years ten months who died from appendicitis; the other was from a boy aged six years who died from a malignant glioma. Both had been treated for one and a half years for Legg-Calve-Perthes' disease which was in a stage of repair at the time of death. The diseased femoral heads were moderately flattened but the surface cartilage was intact. Epiphysial bone and bone marrow were partly replaced by cartilage, fibrous tissue and granulation tissue, and new bone was being formed. Inflammatory reaction was inconspicuous. Enchondral bone formation was only slightly decreased, and the structure of the growth plate was undisturbed. There was no sign of systemic bone disease. In the first case the changes indicated that more than one episode of ischaemia had occurred, and an occlusion--probably from an old thrombus--was demonstrated in the posterior inferior retinacular artery of the femoral head. The last episode of ischaemia, furthermore, had caused infarction of part of the metaphysial bone. In both cases, the central area of the metaphysial bone of the affected femur contained fat, but there were few haemopoietic cells and it therefore looked pale. The findings are discussed in relation to previous work on the pathology in Legg-Calve-Perthes' disease, recent information on the vascularisation of the femoral head in children, and experimental and comparative animal studies.
