The combined flushing and oxidation process using acetic acid and ozone has been used successfully to remove trichloroethylene (TCE) completely from contaminated soil. In this study, the effects of humic acid, a fraction of the organic matter in soil, over the performance of TCE decomposition was evaluated. TCE decomposition by ozone was enhanced by the presence of humic acid at concentrations lower than 8mgCL(-1) and then inhibited at higher concentrations. It is possible that the presence of the soluble humic acid fraction during the ozonation of TCE in acetic acid solutions produces hydroxyl radicals during the TCE ozonation which appears to be the reason for the enhanced TCE decomposition rate. Solid humic acid reduced TCE decomposition rate by acting as an ozone scavenger. Similarly, sorbed TCE reduced the amount of TCE available for decomposition by ozone in solution.  相似文献

Expressed emotion (EE), an index of family member criticism and emotional overinvolvement, predicts outcome among adults and children with mental disorders. However, limited research exists on factors contributing to EE. Aims of the current study were to (a) examine EE in mothers of young children; (b) assess relationships between demographic factors and EE in a diverse sample; and (c) investigate whether family stress and functioning, including quality of marital relationship, life events, maternal stress, and family environment, predict EE. In the current study, 276 mothers completed questionnaires when their children were between 1 and 3 years of age and a measure of EE when their children were in kindergarten. Results indicated that family expressiveness was the most consistent predictor of EE. Further research seems warranted to better delineate associations between family functioning and EE. This study examined the relations among parenting behaviors of 97 coresident mothers and fathers of infants during a dyadic free-play setting. The authors examined the extent to which observed sensitive and intrusive parenting behaviors in mother-child and father-child dyads were related and how perceived marital quality may be associated with the similarity between maternal and paternal parenting behaviors. The authors found support for interdependence of parenting by mothers and fathers. High perceived marital quality was associated with interdependence of sensitive parenting behaviors in mother-infant and father-infant interactions. Negative parenting behaviors by mothers and fathers were interrelated regardless of marital quality. The use of ultrasound energy for accelerating the pronase E enzymatic hydrolysis of human hair for extracting illicit drugs has been novelty tested. The enzymatic extracts obtained after 30 min of sonication in an ultrasonic water bath were subjected to an optimized solid-phase extraction process, which involved a solution of 2.0% (v/v) acetic acid in methanol as eluting solution and concentration by N2 stream evaporation. A gas chromatography/mass spectrometry method was used to separate and determine cocaine, benzoylecgonine, codeine, morphine, and 6-monoacethylmorphine in 20 min. Variables affecting ultrasound-assisted pronase E hydrolysis such as hydrolysis temperature, hydrolysis time, enzyme concentration, catalyzer (1,4-dithiothreitol) concentration, ionic strength, pH, and ultrasound frequency were simultaneously evaluated by a Plackett-Burman design 2(8) PBD of resolution III. The most statistically significant variables were ionic strength and pH, which means that analyte extraction is mainly attributed to pronase E activity. The optimization or evaluation of all the factors has led to an accelerated pronase E hydrolysis of human hair, which can be completed in 30 min. Results have been found to be statistically similar to those obtained with conventional pronase E hydrolysis. The accelerated method was finally applied to several human hair samples from multidrug abusers.  相似文献

ZnSe prepared by metal organic chemical vapor deposition is used as a buffer layer in Cu(In,Ga)(S,Se)2 solar cells without any utilization of wet chemistry. Cell efficiencies are as good as cells with the conventional CdS buffer. Stability of unencapsulated cells under damp heat conditions is somewhat lower for the alternative buffer. Objectives

California experienced a notable decline in per capita cigarette consumption during its comprehensive tobacco control programme. This study examines what proportion of the decline occurred from: (1) fewer ever smokers in the population, (2) more ever smokers quitting, and (3) current smokers smoking less.

Design, subjects

Per capita cigarette consumption computed from cigarette sales and from adult respondents to the large, cross‐sectional, population‐based California Tobacco Surveys of 1990 (n  =  24 296), 1996 (n  =  18 616) and 2002 (n  =  20 525) were examined for similar trends.

Main outcome measure

Changes (period 1: 1990–1996; period 2: 1996–2002) in per capita cigarette consumption from self‐reported survey data were partitioned for the entire population and for demographic subgroups into the three components mentioned above.

Results

In periods 1 and 2, most of the decline in per capita cigarette consumption for the population as a whole was from current smokers smoking less followed by a reduction in ever smokers. The decline from smokers smoking less was particularly evident among young adults (18–29 years) in period 1. While the portion of the decline due to quitting in the entire population in period 1 was negligible, in period 2 it accounted for 22% of the total per capita decline. The decline from quitting in period 2 was mostly observed among women.

Conclusions

Rather than near‐term benefits from smokers quitting, population health benefits from reduced per capita cigarette consumption will likely occur over the longer term from fewer people becoming ever smokers, and more less‐addicted smokers eventually quitting successfully.  相似文献

N-doped In2Ga2ZnO7 photocatalysts were fabricated by solid state reaction route. All the prepared photocatalysts were successfully characterised by PXRD, optical absorption spectra, SEM, TEM, XPS, BET surface area and photoresponse studies. The formation of In2Ga2ZnO7 was confirmed by the PXRD pattern. Optical absorption spectra showed that the visible light absorption of all the photocatalysts were enhanced by nitrogen doping. Among all the prepared photocatalysts, 1 wt% Pt loaded N-GaInZn-500 showed enhanced photocatalytic activity towards hydrogen evolution under visible light irradiation in presence of 10 vol% methanol solution as sacrificial agent. The excellent photocatalytic activity of N-GaInZn-500 is in agreement with N-content, bandgap energy, PL intensity and Surface area.  相似文献

We report on laser operation in a (6 at. % Tm, 5 at. % Yb):KLu(WO4)2 codoped crystal. The vibrational frequencies of KLu(WO4)2 are coupled to the electronic transitions of Tm3+ at 1946 nm, creating virtual final laser levels at higher energy than the ground level 3H6 of Tm3+. The longest recorded laser wavelength was 2039 nm, which is longer than permitted by a pure electronic transition in Tm3+ ions in KLu(WO4)2. We show that every laser wavelength can be explained with the electron-phonon coupling effect, where the vibration frequencies were determined through Raman spectroscopy.  相似文献

Fast and well controlled electrophoretic deposition of CdTe and CdSe nanoparticle (CdTe-np and CdSe-np) layers and nanoparticle layer systems from an exhaustible source has been demonstrated. Using a small volume of pyridine based nanoparticle suspensions with varying concentrations, these were completely drained of nanoparticles during deposition. Our proposed approach is well suited to a practical realization of engineering materials with different band gaps for various promising applications such as fabrication of nanodevices. The formation of a charge selective contact across the CdTe-np/CdSe-np heterojunction was investigated by surface photovoltage methods and evidence of the separation of charge carriers at a CdTe-/CdSe-np heterojunction in‐between was demonstrated.  相似文献

To investigate postconcussive symptoms (PCS) following pediatric mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), 8- to 15-year-old children with mTBI (n = 186) and a comparison group with uncomplicated orthopedic injuries (OI, n = 99) were recruited from two emergency departments. Parent and child ratings of PCS and symptom counts were obtained within 3 weeks after injury (baseline) and at 1, 3, and 12 months postinjury. The mTBI group also completed magnetic resonance imaging at baseline. Group differences were examined using growth modeling, controlling for age at injury, sex, socioeconomic status, and (for parent-based measures) preinjury symptom levels. Relative to the OI group, the mTBI group had higher ratings of somatic PCS and parent counts of PCS at the initial assessments, but higher parent ratings of cognitive PCS and child counts of PCS throughout follow-up. Higher levels of PCS in the mTBI group were associated with motor-vehicle-related trauma, loss of consciousness, neuroimaging abnormalities, and hospitalization. The findings validate both transient and persistent PCS in children with mTBI and document associations of symptoms with injury and noninjury factors.
