Fuzzy clustering enables the simultaneous membership of objects in two or more clusters. This is particularly pertinent where time series are concerned, because very often patterns of time series change over time. Thus, a time series might belong to different clusters over different periods of time, in which case, crisp clustering is unable to capture this multi-cluster membership. In this paper, we adopt a Fuzzy C-Medoids approach to clustering time series based on autoregressive estimates of models fitted to the time series. We illustrate very good performance of this approach in a range of simulation studies. By means of two applications, we also show the usefulness of this clustering approach in the air pollution monitoring, by considering air pollution time series, i.e., CO time series, CO2 time series and NO time series monitored on world and urban scales. In particular, we show that, by considering in the clustering process, the autoregressive representation of these air pollution time series, we are able to detect possible information redundancy in the monitoring networks and then, decreasing the number of monitoring stations, to reduce the monitoring costs and then to increase the monitoring efficiency of the networks.  相似文献

This paper outlines the major motivating factors concerning a novel collaborative project between Edinburgh College of Art and Edinburgh Virtual Environment Centre. The Tacitus project will investigate the use of multi-modal virtual environments, specifically, the haptic (touch) modality, with regards to the creative processes employed by designers working within the field of applied arts. The salient areas of research are described, and the methods by which information regarding these areas will be obtained are considered. Initial investigations have revealed a strong need to mimic the traditional applied artists' workspaces, with co-location of visual and haptic cues a priority.  相似文献

Abstract

Teachers may face important challenges when encouraged to improve their mathematics teaching. Their personal beliefs, knowledge, confidence and personal intentions towards growth and change are all complex factors which may influence teachers’ capacity, and their decisions about personal change in their teaching. In this study, intermediate teachers and the conversations that took place during their monthly Professional Learning Group meetings over a one‐year period were examined in order to better understand issues teachers face in their growth and development as teachers of mathematics. In the Galapagos Islands of Ecuador, one of the greatest threats to the terrestrial ecosystem is the increasing number and areal extent of invasive species. Increased human presence on the islands has hastened the introduction of plant and animal species that threaten the native and endemic flora and fauna. Considerable research on invasive species in the Galapagos Islands has been conducted by the Charles Darwin Foundation. We complement that work through a spatially- and spectrally-explicit satellite assessment of an important invasive plant species (Psidium guajava — guava) on Isabela Island that integrates diverse remote sensing systems, data types, spatial and spectral resolutions, and analytical and image processing approaches. QuickBird and Hyperion satellite data are processed to characterize the areal extent and spatial structure of guava through the following approaches: (1) QuickBird data are classified through a traditional pixel-based approach (i.e., an unsupervised classification approach using the ISODATA algorithm), as well as an Object-Based Image Analysis (OBIA) approach; (2) multiple approaches for spectral “unmixing” of the Hyperion hyper-spectral data are assessed to construct spectral end-members from QuickBird data using linear and non-linear mixture modeling approaches; and (3) landscape pattern metrics are calculated and compared for the pixel-based, object-based, and spectral unmixing approaches. The spectral–spatial characteristics of guava are interpreted relative to management strategies for the control of guava and the restoration of natural ecosystems in the Galapagos National Park.  相似文献

This paper focuses on the application of a genetic algorithm (GA) in estimating the fate and transport parameters of a reacting solute from the column and batch experiments involving a saturated porous medium. A program is developed using C++ to model the column and batch data using kinetically controlled one- or two-site sorption models including linear and/or nonlinear forms. The objective of the algorithm is to minimize the sum of squared differences between the measured and modeled solute concentration data associated with column effluent (i.e., “breakthrough curves”). The GA is capable of estimating transport and reactions parameters such as forward and reverse reaction rates and parameters of the nonlinear reaction models, from a given set of measured data. Further simulations have been performed to estimate the appropriate configurations of the GA, which assist the method in estimating the fate and transport parameters more efficiently. It is shown that a wide range of the GA parameters can lead to convergence to appropriate estimations. The results obtained from this study show that the capability of GAs to fit the column and batch experiment data is promising.  相似文献

Given the prevalence of computers in education today, it is critical to understand teachers’ perspectives regarding computer integration in their classrooms. The current study surveyed a random sample of a heterogeneous group of 185 elementary and 204 secondary teachers in order to provide a comprehensive summary of teacher characteristics and variables that best discriminate between teachers who integrate computers and those who do not. Discriminant Function Analysis indicated seven variables for elementary teachers and six for secondary teachers (accounting for 74% and 68% of the variance, respectively) that discriminated between high and low integrators. Variables included positive teaching experiences with computers; teacher’s comfort with computers; beliefs supporting the use of computers as an instructional tool; training; motivation; support; and teaching efficacy. Implications for support of computer integration in the classroom are discussed.  相似文献

The effects of a segmented presentation applied to a visually structured text were examined in the context of the explosion of small-screen devices. Empirical research investigating the influence of text signaling on text processing suggests that the text visual structure may influence comprehension by facilitating the construction of a coherent text representation. Undergraduate students were asked to read a text under different segmented conditions varying on the type of information provided about the text visual structure and on the segmentation unit. When the segmented presentation did not supply any information or when it only offered local information about the text visual structure, text comprehension depended on the segmentation unit. When the segmentation unit did not fit the text visual structure, an erroneous text representation was constructed, whereas the compatible segmentation unit led to a correct text comprehension. When the segmented presentation rendered the global text visual structure, the segmentation unit had no effect on comprehension and more readers constructed a correct and close text representation. Thus, the text visual structure seems to play a role in text comprehension and this role has to be taken into account for text segmented presentation.  相似文献

Bonded concrete overlays of asphalt pavements (BCOAs) are becoming a common rehabilitation technique used for distressed hot mix asphalt (HMA) roadways. The original design procedures were based primarily on data from instrumented pavements and finite element modelling. They were governed by the assumption that the failure mechanism was a function of the overlay thickness. However, field observations have indicated that the actual failure modes are dictated by slab size. The newly developed Bonded Concrete Overlay of Asphalt Mechanistic-Empirical design procedure (BCOA-ME) presented here is valid for overlays that are between 2.5 and 6.5 in (64–154 mm), and includes five primary enhancements to the Portland Cement Association and Colorado Department of Transportation procedures that have been traditionally used: 1.) the failure mode is dictated by the joint spacing; 2.) a new structural model for longitudinal cracking for 6-ft × 6-ft (1.8 m × 1.8 m) concrete overlays has been developed to better predict the critical stresses; 3.) the stress adjustment factors have been calibrated with performance data; 4.) the equivalent temperature gradients used as design input are defined based on the pavement structure and geographical location of the project; and 5.) the effect of temperature change on underlying HMA stiffness is considered. Finally, validation studies were completed on the new procedure and comparisons made between the revised procedure and actual performance data for five separate projects showed reasonable results. A sensitivity analysis also revealed that the predicted thickness obtained using the revised procedure was sensitive to HMA thickness, the modulus of rupture of the Portland cement concrete, and the level of traffic, as would be expected.  相似文献
