This paper studies an innovative development of a steel grinding–hardening technology using an inert cryogen—liquid nitrogen. It was found that phase transformations took place during grinding with the application of liquid nitrogen and resulted in hardened surface layer in a ground component. The layer had a fine laths martensite structure which gave rise to a remarkably high hardness. It was also shown that the treatment can produce superior surface integrity, with compressive surface residual stresses and without surface oxidation. The molecular orientation at the outer surface of injection–stretch–blow‐molded bottles made from poly(ethylene terephthalate) was characterized and quantified by means of front‐surface reflection infrared spectroscopy based on a method developed previously. Results were obtained for two different bottle shapes (cylindrical and rectangular) molded at different injection mold temperatures (16, 38, and 60°C). For the cylindrical bottles, the preferred molecular chain orientation was found to be in the axial direction, with the Hermans orientation function near 0.3 for all three mold temperatures. For the less symmetrical rectangular bottles, a significant difference was observed between the large and small faces. For the large face, the orientation was mainly in the hoop direction; the Hermans orientation function was in the range of 0.3–0.5 and was essentially the same at all mold temperatures and positions along the bottle height. For the small face, on the other hand, the preferred orientation changed from the hoop direction near the bottom to the axial direction near the top, and the variation was more pronounced at lower mold temperatures. The utility of the front‐surface reflection technique was clearly demonstrated. Poly(butadiene-co-styrene) [P(B-S)] core-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) shell particles were prepared using a two-step emulsion polymerization. These core-shell particles were used to toughen an epoxy polymer. The role of particle-epoxy interfaces were studied by systematically varying the shell compositions of the core-shell particles such as PMMA, P[MMA-acrylonitrile (AN)], P[MMA-glycidyl methacrylate (GMA)] and P[MMA-divinyl benzene(DVB)]. Therefore, the nature of the particle-epoxy interfaces is varied in terms of physical interactions and chemical bonding. The fracture toughness values of the toughened epoxies were measured using linear elastic fracture mechanics. Results indicate that the morphology of the dispersed particles in the epoxy matrix plays an important role in the toughening of epoxies. This degree of dispersion can be varied by incorporating AN and GMA comonomers in the PMMA shells or by crosslinking the shell. In summary, nanoscale interactions of the rubber-matrix interface do not directly influence fracture toughness, instead, it was found that the nanoscale interactions could be used to control the blend morphology which has a dramatic effect on toughness. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. 相似文献

Atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been used to study the morphology and microstructure of an amine-cured epoxy before and
after outdoor exposure. Measurements were made from samples prepared in an essentially CO2-free, H2O-free glove box and from samples prepared in ambient conditions. For those prepared in a CO2-free glove box, AFM imaging was conducted on (1) an unexposed air/coating surface, (2) an unexposed coating bulk, (3) an
unexposed coating/substrate interface, and (4) a field exposed air/coating surface. For samples prepared in ambient conditions,
only the unexposed air/coating surface was investigated. The same regions of the exposed samples were scanned periodically
by the AFM to monitor changes in the surface morphology of the coating as UV exposure progressed. Small angle neutron scattering
and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) studies were performed to verify the microstructure and to follow chemical
changes during outdoor exposure, respectively. The results have shown that amine blushing, which occurs only under ambient
conditions, had a significant effect on the surface morphology and microstructure of the epoxy. The surface morphology of
the samples prepared under CO2-free, dry conditions was generally smooth and homogeneous. However, the interface and the bulk samples clearly revealed a
two-phase structure consisting of bright nodular domains and dark interstitial regions, indicating an inhomogeneous microstructure.
Such heterogeneous structure of the bulk was in good agreement with results obtained by small angle neutron scattering of
unexposed samples and by AFM phase imaging of the degraded sample surface. The relationship between submicrometer physical
changes and molecular chemical degradation is discussed.

The morphology, composition and the electrical and electrochemical behaviour of the anodic microporous layer, prepared by the galvanostatic anodisation of Ti after sparking, followed by galvanostatic deposition of Pt or Ir have been investigated. These electrodes are proposed to function as dimensionally stable anodes (DSAs). For Ti/TiO2/Pt electrodes, Pt is deposited within some of the micropores of the oxide film. In contrast, for Ti/TiO2/Ir, the metal is deposited preferentially on the top surface. This difference is thought to result from the position of the metal deposition potential with respect to the flat band potential of n-TiO2. Optical imaging of both types of DSA suggests that only a few sites on the surface are responsible for electron exchange at the DSA-electrolyte interface. C-AFM measurements of Ti/TiO2/Pt samples subjected to long-term anodic polarisation, suggest that the Ti-noble metal contact is progressively insulated by thickening of the TiO2 barrier layer, promoting passivation of the DSA. For Ir coated anodes, catalytic activity is directly related to the presence of Ir and to the stability of the catalytic oxide layer. Under Cu electrowinning conditions, the electrochemically formed hydrated Ir oxide was found to be catalytically less stable, than the iridium oxide film subjected to a heat treatment. 相似文献

We consider the classic problem of pole placement by state feedback. We offer an eigenstructure assignment algorithm to obtain a novel parametric form for the pole-placing feedback matrix that can deliver any set of desired closed-loop eigenvalues, with any desired multiplicities. This parametric formula is then exploited to introduce an unconstrained nonlinear optimisation algorithm to obtain a feedback matrix that delivers the desired pole placement with optimal robustness and minimum gain. Currently, there is no enforcement of physical standards within Australian fire services post-recruitment, possibly leading to inappropriate fitness and body composition. This study evaluated the impacts of ageing on physical standards of Australian firefighters. Seventy-three firefighters from three different 10-year age groups [25–34 years (n = 27), 35–44 years (n = 27), 45–54 years (n = 19)] volunteered for physical testing using dual-energy X-ray analysis and existing fitness tests used for recruitment by an Australian fire service. Older (45–54 years) participants demonstrated significantly poorer physical standards compared with younger participants including cardiovascular fitness (p < 0.05), strength (p = 0.001) and simulated operational power testing tasks (p < 0.001). Age-related body composition changes were also observed independent of body mass index. Minimum recruitment standards and fitness programs need to account for age-related declines in physical capabilities to ensure that the minimum standard is maintained regardless of age.
Practitioner Summary: Using dual-energy X-ray analysis and established fitness testing protocols, this study aimed to gain an appreciation of the current standards of body composition and fitness of Australian firefighters and the effects of ageing on their physical abilities post-recruitment. Laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM) has been used to characterize the changes in film thickness and local surface morphology
of polymer coatings during the UV degradation process. With the noninvasive feature of LSCM, one can obtain thickness information
directly and nondestructively at various exposure times without destroying the specimens or deriving the thickness values
from IR measurement by assuming uniform film ablation. Two acrylic polymer coatings were chosen for the study, and the physical
and chemical changes of the two systems at various exposure times were measured and analyzed. Those measurable physical changes
caused by UV exposure include film ablation, formation of pits and other surface defects, and increases in surface roughness.
It was found in both coatings that changes in measured film thickness by LSCM were not correlated linearly to the predicted
thickness loss using the changes in the CH band obtained by the Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy measurements
in the later degradation stages. This result suggested it was not a uniform film ablation process during the UV degradation.
At later stages, where surface deformation became severe, surface roughness and profile information using LSCM were also proven
to be useful for analyzing the surface degradation process

We have identified five compounds from the headspace of calling male Mediterranean fruit flies (medfly),Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), and three compounds from the headspace of ripe mango (Mangifera indica L). using coupled gas chromatographic-electroantennographic (GC-EAG) recordings, coupled gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric (GC-MS) analysis, and electroantennographic (EAG) assays of standards. The male-produced volatiles eliciting responses from female antennae were ethyl-(E)-3-octenoate, geranyl acetate, (E,E)--farnesene, linalool, and indole. An EAG dose-response test of linalool enantiomers and indole with female medfly antennae showed relatively strong EAG activities, but no significant difference between (R)-(-)-linalool and (S)-(+)-linalool. The three mango volatiles were identified as (1S)-(-)--pinene, ethyl octanoate, and-caryophyllene. In addition, a strong antennal response was recorded from a contaminant,-copaene, present in a commercial sample of-caryophyllene. The EAG response amplitudes from both male and female antennae to the above three mango volatiles were significantly greater than to a hexanol control. For both male and female medfly antennae, the greatest EAG responses were elicited by-caryophyllene followed by ethyl octanoate. The mean EAG responses of female antennae to-caryophyllene and (1S)-(-)--pinene were significantly greater than those of male antennae. 相似文献

Extract of purple sunflower hulls is a potential red food colorant; however, suitable process conditions must still be identified.
Selected process variables were studied using bench-scale units to prepare, clarify, concentrate and spray dry extracts. Concentration
by evaporation at 32°C and addition of maltodextrin to 15% (wt/dry wt) prior to drying largely eliminated pigment degradation
during those steps. Relative to water extracts, extracts prepared with 5 to 15% ethanol in water generally yielded more pigment
with similar levels of degradation and loss during subsequent processing. Use of 5% ethanol/2% citric acid reduced yield by
about half relative to water, but gave a powder with a lower degradation index and wetting time. Percentage recovery of pigment
during concentration and drying was not greatly affected by solvent type or extraction temperature. 相似文献
