CEPAO—an automatic program for rigid-plastic and elastic-plastic analysis and optimization of frame structures

The computer program CEPAO handles the plastic design and analysis of plane frame structures. Classical finite element techniques combined with linear programming are used. In the plastic limit analysis, the program gives the collapsed load, the distribution of the bending moments, the normal forces, the shear forces, and the collapsed mechanisms of structures with proportional loading. Concerning stable design, the program finds the practical discrete profiles existing in Euronorm or American norm of different elements of the structure with minimum weight. The force distributions and the mechanism of the optimum state are given. The different stability conditions proposed by the European Convention for Constructional Steelwork (ECCS) are verified a posteriori to obtain, finally, a safe structure. From the fact that the European Convention recommends a limitation of elasto-plastic deflections, a step-by-step program is combined with the optimization procedure to obtain an elasto-plastic analysis of the stable structure.The program may also consider the analysis and design of frame structures under variable loadings. Efficient linear programming formulations are adopted in such a way that all necessary information, such as residual stresses, plastic deformations and optimum mechanisms, are obtained directly in the output.CEPAO may also design concrete reinforced structures (optimal limit design) where full redistribution of moments serviceability and rotation capacity of critical sections are taken into account.     

Attitudes of academic clinical psychologists toward projective techniques: 1968–1983.

Replicated a survey by the 3rd author et al (see record 1968-18843-001) concerning the attitudes of academic clinical faculty toward projective techniques. The questionnaire was completed by 153 faculty in American Psychological Association (APA)-approved programs in clinical psychology. As was found in the 1968 survey, many Ss supported instruction in projectives, but they held generally negative attitudes toward projectives. More of the 1983 Ss than the 1968 Ss expressed negative attitudes toward specific projectives such as the Rorschach. Negative attitudes toward projectives were particularly prominent among the younger Ss in the 1983 survey. (14 ref) (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)     

Modulation Transfer Noise Effects from a Continuous Digital Carrier to FDM/FM Carriers in Memoryless Nonlinear Devices

An analysis of the modulation transfer noise effects from a continuous (nonbursty) digital carrier to multiple FDM/FM carriers in a common memoryless nonlinear amplifier (e.g., satellite transponder TWTA) is presented. It is shown that the modulation transfer noise, which is caused by the random envelope variations of the digital carrier due to the random data patterns and filtering of the PSK pulses, consists of both discrete and continuous spectral components in the baseband of the FDM/FM carriers. Numerical examples in terms of the noise power ratio as well as a comparison between measured and computed results are given. In general, the discrete or tonal interference component at the symbol rate of the digital carrier is quite significant. Results of this paper should be useful in the planning of FDMA satellite transponders employing the mixed PSK-FM mode of operation.     

Psychosocial enhancement of immunocompetence in a geriatric population.

Assessed the enhancement of immunocompetence by relaxation and social contact in 45 60–88 yr old geriatric residents of independent-living facilities. Ss were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 protocols: (1) relaxation training, (2) social contact, or (3) no contact. Ss in the relaxation and social-contact conditions were seen individually 3 times/wk for 1 mo. Blood samples and self-report data were obtained at baseline, at the end of the intervention, and at a 1-mo follow-up. At the end of the intervention, Ss in the relaxation group, who had been taught progressive relaxation and guided imagery as an active coping skill, showed a significant increase in natural killer cell activity and significant decreases in antibody titers to Herpes simplex virus and self-rated distress. The other 2 groups showed nonsignificant changes. There was a general increase in the T-lymphocyte response to phytohemagglutinin stimulation at the end of the intervention, with greater change at lower mitogen concentrations. Improved dispersive mixing through reduction in flow field vorticity

Dispersive mixing is most efficiently accomplished with pure straining flow. Vorticity in the flow field inhibits this extending action; accordingly, the presence of shearing flow will decrease the overall effectiveness of dispersive mixing processes. A method to reduce the vorticity by inducing lubricated flow through development of a nonuniform distribution of the components of a polymer blend is described.     

Androgyny and other measures of masculinity-femininity.

Analyzed S. L. Bem's measures of Masculinity (M), Femininity (F), and the absolute value of her androgyny measure by the prinicipal-components method with the Masculinity-Femininity scales from the MMPI, the California Psychological Inventory, the Omnibus Personality Inventory, and the Need for Heterosexuality scale of the Adjective Check List. Separate analyses for 59 male and 58 female undergraduates yielded the same 3 orthogonal components for each sex: masculinity-femininity, heterosexuality, and androgyny. The 3 Masculinity-Femininity scales contributed to the 1st component. Heterosexuality and Bem's M and F scales contributed to the 2nd. Androgyny and M (for the males) and F (for the females) contributed to the 3rd. Results support Bem's (1974, 1975) statements about androgyny and show that sex role traits are organized similarly for males and females. Objective self-awareness as a variable in counseling process and outcome.

Hypothesized that client objective self-awareness (OSA), as both a transient state and an enduring trait, is important in counseling. OSA refers to reflexive attention to oneself and internal comparison of one's own behavior with salient societal or personally held values. 60 undergraduates completed the Private Self-Consciousness subscale of The Self-Consciousness Scale, the Procrastination Log, and the Procrastination Inventory. Two levels of trait OSA were used as a blocking variable, while 3 counseling conditions varied the amount of state OSA. The self-aware condition sought to enhance S self-focus, the non-self-aware condition sought to minimize S self-focus, and the control group received no counseling. Findings indicate an interaction between trait and state dimensions such that Ss high in trait OSA were most affected by the interview that sought to enhance state OSA. Ss low in trait OSA were the only ones who made changes over time in behavior and self-satisfaction. Findings have implications for therapeutic approaches to clients with differing amounts of dispositional self-consciousness. Characterisation of VSe2−xSx solid solutions (0 ⩽ x ⩽ 2)

VSe_2?xS_x solid solutions are prepared for 0 ? x ? 2. Two types of phases : IT VSe₂ and V₅S₈ are successively obtained when x increases with a gradual change of the lattice parameters in the intermediate range 0.6 ? x ? 1.2. Three types of magnetic behaviors are observed : weak paramagnetism with charge density wave for x < 0.2, increased paramagnetism with no distortion for 0.2 ? x ? 1.2 and antiferromagnetism for x > 1.2. This magnetization is ascribed to V³⁺ ions intercalated in the Van Der Waals gap. Electron microprobe chemical analysis is consistent with this interpretation.

Systeme Ga2S3FeS — Diagramme de phase — etude cristallographique

The system was studied by DTA, X-ray diffraction and in particular by the Guinier-Lenné method. Eight intermediate phases are described. 1) Three solid solutions in the Ga₂S₃ region : a) a wurtzite-type solid solution (T > 1000° C ; 0.05 < n < 0.23) (n = Fe $\text{at}\text{Fe}$ at+Ga at), b) a blende-type solid solution (700°C < T < 980°C ; 0.10 < n < 0.20) with many stacking faults, c) a non-stoichiometric hexagonal phase α'Ga₂S₃ type (T < 700°C, 0.07 < n < 0.12). 2) for n = 0.20 and T = 540°C a superstructure of orthorhombic wurtzite-like array FeGa₄S₇. 3) From n = 0.20 through n = 0.27, a non stoichiometric superstructure of tetragonal-like array has the CdGa₂S₄ type (600°C < T < 1030°C). 4) For n = 0.33, the FeGa₂S₄ has two forms depending from the temperature : a) a low temperature form is trigonal ; b) a high temperature form is orthorhombic type ZnAl₂S₄. Transition temperature is 1010°C. 5) For n = 0.50, Fe₂Ga₂S₅ polytypes : a) Fe₂Ga₂S₅α 1T type Mn₂Ga₂S₅ ; b) Fe₂Ga₂S₅ 2H ; c) Fe₂Ga₂S₅ 3R type Mn₂Al₂Se₅. A phase diagram is proposed.
