The role of thermal diffusivity in the machining performance of oxide ceramic cutting tool materials
The machining performance of oxide ceramic cutting tools was correlated with their values of thermal diffusivity, hardness and density. It was found that high crater wear resistance requires high values of the thermal diffusivity, hardness and density. High flank wear resistance requires a high value of thermal diffusivity, but is independent of hardness. In contrast, a good surface finish of the steel workpiece (AISI 4340) requires a combination of low thermal diffusivity and low hardness. 相似文献

Although iron-based permeable reactive barriers are gaining importance for treating groundwater contaminants, little is currently known about the effect of cosolutes on barrier longevity. Because of their corrosion inhibiting properties, dissolved silica species are of particular concern. This research investigates the effect of silica on the reduction of 1,1,1-trichloroethane by granular iron as a function of added silica concentration, pH, and duration of iron exposure to dissolved silica. Batch studies reveal that, at pH 8.5 and above, added silica concentrations as low as 0.17 mM cause a 30% reduction in the reactivity of iron. At higher silica concentrations, reactivity decreases by 65-75%. The inhibitory effect is greater at higher pH: 0.83 mM silica has no apparent adverse effect at pH 7.5, but leads to a 46% decrease in reaction rate at pH 8 and 90% at pH 9. This corresponds to observed trends in silica adsorption onto iron, which is low at pH 7.3 but increases at higher pH. Extending the duration of iron exposure to silica solutions also leads to a more pronounced inhibitory effect. Silicon nanocolumns have been used as novel supports for the high-density immobilization of enzymes. Silicon nanocolumns with diameters of ca. 50-100 nm and a height of 1 micron were constructed using glancing angle deposition. The surfaces were successively treated with 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and then with an amine reactive polymer, poly(ethylene-alt-maleic anhydride), to attach soybean peroxidase (SBP) to the support. Optimal coverage of APTES, polymer, and SBP was obtained for incorporation of enzyme onto the sidewalls of the nanocolumns. SBP immobilized on the silicon nanocolumns demonstrated an enhancement in biocatalytic activity of 160% over that of the enzyme immobilized on flat silicon wafers with the same projected area. The enzymatic activity decreased with progressive washes for both supports. This decrease in the activity of enzyme was found to be primarily due to the intrinsic deactivation of immobilized enzyme on the silicon surface. Designing nanocolumns with optimal dimensions, spacing, and surface chemistry may lead to the development of high-density arrays of proteins for applications in biotechnology. 相似文献

Single-particle mass spectrometers are now commonly used to analyze atmospheric particles and generate tens of thousands of spectra from typical measurement campaigns. The ART-2a spectrum algorithm has been used to classify these spectra. In this work, we generate a range of particles that are models of those that are common in the atmosphere. A single-particle mass spectrometer is used to analyze these known particles, and the spectra are classified using ART-2a. The optimum vigilance parameter is approximately 0.5 while the optimum learning rate is approximately 0.05. The classifications elucidate limitations in generation of test particles, their analysis by single-particle techniques, and their classification by ART-2a. 相似文献

Abstract— CMOS TFT circuits were fabricated on plastic using sequential laterally solidified silicon combined with a low‐temperature CMOS process. The unity‐gain frequencies of the best of NMOS TFTs are greater than 250 MHz, and the CMOS ring oscillators operate at 100 MHz. To the best of the authors' knowledge, these are the highest‐frequency circuits ever fabricated directly on plastic. This paper describes a new algorithm for automatically detecting creak in speech signals. Detection is made by utilising two new acoustic parameters which are designed to characterise creaky excitations following previous evidence in the literature combined with new insights from observations in the current work. In particular the new method focuses on features in the Linear Prediction (LP) residual signal including the presence of secondary peaks as well as prominent impulse-like excitation peaks. These parameters are used as input features to a decision tree classifier for identifying creaky regions. The algorithm was evaluated on a range of read and conversational speech databases and was shown to clearly outperform the state-of-the-art. Further experiments involving degradations of the speech signal demonstrated robustness to both white and babble noise, providing better results than the state-of-the-art down to at least 20 dB signal to noise ratio. 相似文献

The ability to transmit particles into the ablation region of an aerosol mass spectrometer determines in part the lower size limit for particles that can be analyzed. A large fraction of small particles (< 100 nm) are lost due to processes such as Brownian diffusion that broaden the particle beam. In this work, electrostatic focusing is used to overcome the limits of aerodynamic focusing in the analysis of nanometer-sized particles by aerosol mass spectrometry. A simple tube lens is used to focus charged particles into the ablation laser beam path. The diameter of the focused beam is smaller than the fundamental aerodynamic limit imposed by Brownian motion. Measured enhancements of the hit rate for particles between 21 and 33 nm diameter are between 3 and 6. These values are lower limits for the true enhancements. The lens is also energy selective and can be used to select the mass (size) of the particles being analyzed. 相似文献

Botulinum toxin A has been used therapeutically in humans for over 20 years for a variety of medical indications. For the past 7 years, the author has injected it for cosmetic purposes in a variety of muscles of the head and neck. Fifty patient-injections of the platysma muscle were performed in an attempt to correct platysmal banding. An improvement was seen in all patients who presented to the office for follow-up in a timely manner (44 injections). Results were limited by redundant skin. No incidence of dysphagia or airway obstruction was encountered. The only complication noted was bruising. Although at least a small improvement in platysmal banding was seen in all patients, in no patient was there evidence of lifting of the lower face. All results were temporary. 相似文献

We have fabricated and characterized analog and digital circuits using organic thin-film transistors on polyester film substrates. These are the first reported dynamic results for organic circuits fabricated on polyester substrates.
