Reaction of neuronal nitric-oxide synthase with oxygen at low temperature. Evidence for reductive activation of the oxy-ferrous complex by tetrahydrobiopterin

The reaction of reduced NO synthase (NOS) with molecular oxygen was studied at -30 degreesC. In the absence of substrate, the complex formed between ferrous NOS and O2 was sufficiently long lived for a precise spectroscopic characterization. This complex displayed similar spectral characteristics as the oxyferrous complex of cytochrome P450 (lambda max = 416.5 nm). It then decomposed to the ferric state. The oxidation of the flavin components was much slower and could be observed only at temperatures higher than -20 degreesC. In the presence of substrate (L-arginine), another, 12-nm blue-shifted, intermediate spectrum was formed. The breakdown of the latter species resulted in the production of Nomega-hydroxy-L-arginine in a stoichiometry of maximally 52% per NOS heme. This product formation took place also in the absence of the reductase domain of NOS. Both formation of the blue-shifted intermediate and of Nomega-hydroxy-L-arginine required the presence of tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4). We propose that the blue-shifted intermediate is the result of reductive activation of the oxygenated complex, and the electron is provided by BH4. These observations suggest that the reduction of the oxyferroheme complex may be the main function of BH4 in NOS catalysis.     

Uncertainty of discrete stochastic systems: general theory andstatistical inference

Uncertainty is defined in a new manner, as a function of discrete probability distributions satisfying a simple and intuitively appealing weak monotonicity condition. It is shown that every uncertainty is Schur-concave and conversely, every Schur-concave function of distributions is an uncertainty. General properties of uncertainties are systematically studied. Many characteristics of distributions introduced previously in statistical physics, mathematical statistics, econometrics and information theory are shown to be particular examples of uncertainties. New examples are introduced, and traditional as well as some new methods for obtaining uncertainties are discussed. The information defined by decrease of uncertainty resulting from an observation is investigated and related to previous concepts of information. Further, statistical inference about uncertainties is investigated, based on independent observations of system states. In particular, asymptotic distributions of maximum likelihood estimates of uncertainties and uncertainty-related functions are derived, and asymptotically α-level Neyman-Pearson tests of hypotheses about these system characteristics are presented     

Dermoid cyst of the pancreas: a rare cystic neoplasm

Dermoid cysts of the pancreas, also called cystic teratomas, are a rare entity and are included in the group of neoplasms with a germ cell origin. Only twelve cases have been described in the world literature. The symptomatology is due to tumor compression of the neighboring tissues. Ultrasonography and computed tomography may be helpful, but there are no pathognomonic data for their preoperative recognition. The differential diagnosis should include all other cystic tumors of the pancreas. Complete surgical removal is mandatory. We describe the diagnostic and surgical procedures in a 74 year-old man with a pre-operatively unsuspected dermoid cyst. We review the previously published cases and emphasize the appropriate therapeutical management.

Experimental results of a high Q quasioptical reflection cavity

A quasi-optical reflection cavity intended to be used as the resonant load of a submillimeter wavelength oscillator has been designed, constructed, and tested. The resonator consists of three elements in cascade: a high Q, high finesse folded Fabry-Perot resonator, a lower Q, low finesse Fabry-Perot resonator, and a Littrow mounted diffraction grating. The resonator exhibits a Q of 6600 and 2.5 dB of loss at 63 GHz. The design can be scaled to 1 THz, where waveguide structures become impractical, to serve as the resonator for high frequency quantum well resonant tunneling device oscillators.
