Estimation of the required amount of hydrological exploration in lignite mining areas on the basis of hypothetical hydrogeological models

Mine drainage is a necessary but very costly precaution for open-pit lignite mining in sandy aquifers. Consequently, the minimization of the number of drainage wells and their optimal operation become important tasks in designing mine drainage systems. Comprehensive groundwater flow models have to be used, both, for the design of drainage wells, and for the analysis of water management strategies in mining areas. The accuracy of computations with such models depends on the precision of the underlying hydrogeological informations. In order to get these informations detailed and costly hydrogeological explorations have to be done in the mining regions. The basic informations are obtained using exploration drilling. The cost for hydrogeological exploration are approximately a linear function of the number of exploration bore holes. Therefore the reduction of drilling gets a key role in reducing costs of exploration. This might be done by:

- increased use of geophysical exploration methods,

- complex analysis of exploration results using mathematical statistical methods,

- precise estimation of the required amount of hydrogeological informations.

The paper describes a mathematical approach to support the complex decision making procedure of estimating the optimal amount of hydrogeological exploration with respect to a given mine drainage goal.     

Learning curve analysis of concentrated photovoltaic systems

Price declines and volume growth of concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) systems are analysed using the learning curve methodology and compared with other forms of solar electricity generation. Logarithmic regression analysis determines a learning rate of 18% for CPV systems with 90% confidence of that rate being between 14 and 22%, which is higher than the learning rates of other solar generation systems (11% for CSP and 12 to 14% for PV). Current CPV system prices are competitive with PV and CSP, which, when combined with the higher learning rate, indicates that CPV is likely to further improve its marketability. A target price of 1 $/W in 2020 could be achieved with a compound growth rate of 67% for the total deployed volume between 2014 and 2020, which would realize a cumulative deployed volume of 7900 MW. Other projections of deployment volumes from commercial sources are converted using the learning rate into future price scenarios, resulting in predicted prices in the range of 1.1 to 1.3 $/W in 2020. © 2014 The Authors. Evaluation of Antioxidative Constituents from Thyme

The non-polar fraction of thyme was examined for the occurrence of phenolic components and their antioxidative activity. In addition to carvacrol ( II ) and thymol ( III ), p -cymene-2,3-diol (I ; 2,3-dihydroxy-4-isopropyl-1-methylbenzene) was isolated for the first time from thyme. The structure of I was elucidated using ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), ¹³C NMR, and mass spectrometry. Antioxidative activity was investigated with the Rancimat method (100°C) and the Schaal test (60°C). Compound I exhibited the strongest antioxidative activity which was greater than that of α-tocopherol and butylated hydroxyanisole. Five thyme species were analysed by means of HPLC with electrochemical detection for the concentration of compounds I – III . The highest amounts of I – III were found in Thymus vulgaris L.

The influence of extraction of reinforced fibres on surface properties and the curing reaction of epoxy resin matrix in composites were investigated. With increasing fibre surface polarity, as the result of the extraction, the resin wettability was improved and the reaction rate of curing of the epoxy resin matrix increased. The wettability and the reaction rate oppositely decreased with decreasing fibre surface polarity.     

Molecular Weight Characterization and Gelling Properties of Acid-Modified Maize Starches

The reduction in the molecular weight distribution during acid hydrolysis of ordinary and waxy maize starch occured in two stages: first amylopectin degraded to intermediate high molecular weight polysac-charides, secondly, these were further hydrolyzed. The amylose moiety of ordinary and high-amylose starch was not affected very much by the hydrolysis conditions used (0.1–1 M HCI, 40°C, 0.3–4 h), but the gelling properties of starch weakened. The amylopectin degradation products, probably branched dextrins, were shown to hinder the gel formation of amylose in the starch pastes.

Photochemistry of Acylazides. VIII. Do Acylnitrenes React like 1,3-Dipoles? The formation of three- ore five-membered heterocyclic rings by the reaction of acylnitrenes with olefins depends on the electron density at the double bond. The generally expected formation of aziridines by a cheletropic reaction was observed by photolysis of aroylazides 1 in the presence of 2,5-dihydrofuran 2 . But with enolethers 3 and 4 oxazolines were directly formed. This [3 + 2] cycloaddition is regiospecific. The cycloaddition is modestly stereoselective by steric hindrance within the cyclic enolether 3b . Very small de-values were found with chiral substituents in the acylazide 13 . The azide decomposition was also achieved by photoinduced electron transfer. The same cycloaddition products as obtained by direct photolysis of the azides were obtained via radical anions of the acylazide. Using Michler's ketone as electron donor in the triplet state the formation of isocyanate which diminishes the yield of cycloadducts can be avoided.

Aroma of dehydrated pear products

Pear purees and cubes were dehydrated with sugars (sucrose and trehalose) addition. Freeze drying and foam-mat drying were used. Manual solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coupled with gas chromatography (GC-flame ionization detector (FID) and GC-MS) was applied to determine the changes in retention of aroma compounds in dehydrated pear purees and cubes. The best retention of aroma compounds in dehydrated pear purees was noticed in the case when freeze drying and trehalose addition were combined. In dehydrated pear cubes, previously dipped in trehalose solution, the highest aroma retention was also determined. This study showed possible application of trehalose as potentially beneficial food ingredient, with the aim to improve the quality of dehydrated fruit products, especially their aroma, and to produce superior dried fruit products or ingredients, which are widely used in food formulation.
