Grain boundary sliding (GBS) is thought to be the principal driving force for the nucleation, growth, and coalescence of grain boundary cavities during compressive creep of polycrystalline ceramics. It has been shown theoretically that stochastic GBS gives rise to continuous cavity nucleation and transient cavity growth and coalescence, eventually leading to crack formation and failure. This paper will show through experimental measurements, using stereoimaging techniques, that GBS is in fact stochastic. Also, mode II GBS, in-plane grain rotation, and in-grain shear displacements, strains, and strain rate measurements during creep of Lucalox Al2O3 will be presented. These displacements, measured on a machine vision system, will be presented in terms of the surrounding microstructural constraint and their lack of angular relation to the compressive load axis.  相似文献

Since the mid-1980s there has been concern about the growing number of female drivers in the US involved in fatal motor vehicle crashes, and similar trends have been noted in other parts of the world. The present study examined whether this trend has continued into the 1990s and the reasons for it. Fatal crash data were obtained from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), mileage data from the National Personal Transportation Survey, and licensure data from the Federal Highway Administration. Many more women were licensed to drive in 1998 than in 1975, and on average they drove more miles. When changes in total annual mileage were taken into account, per-mile crash rates decreased similarly for men and women (about 40%). An examination of the characteristics of their fatal crashes revealed that male and female drivers have seen similar reductions in single-vehicle, nighttime, and alcohol-related crashes. However, men continue to be involved more often in these types of crashes.  相似文献

This paper investigates the hypothesis that observed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentrations in an aqueous system are equal to the sum of the organic phase and soluble phase molar concentrations. While the organic phase concentrations are proportional to the PAH mole fraction in the oil, the soluble phase molar concentrations are estimated using Raoult's law. A batch laboratory mixing vessel with a scalable mixing energy was loaded initially at various oil layer thicknesses (0.4-3.2 mm) which correspond to oil surface loadings (40-310 mg/cm2). The vessel was agitated at constant mean shear rates (Gm = 5, 20 s(-1)). Total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) samples were taken periodically to estimate the entrainment rate as a function of initial oil layer thickness. TPH concentrations were measured in-situ using a laser scattering instrument (LISST-100) and ex-situ using gravimetric analysis. At a steady-state TPH concentration (>72 h), additional samples were analyzed for PAH concentration using GC/MS analysis. TPH concentrations increased over time according to a first-order kinetic model. Generally, the first-order rate constant and steady-state concentration both increased with increased oil loading and with increased Gm. In addition, measured PAH concentrations correlated well (r2 > 0.96) with those predicted by a partitioning model. These results are useful for assessing the effects of mixing and oil loading conditions on crude oil entrainment and PAH partitioning.  相似文献

Hydrogen for fuel cells can be produced by reforming hydrocarbons. The H2-rich reformate typically contains about 1 mol% CO which will poison the anode of polymer electrolyte fuel cells. The CO concentration can be reduced by preferential oxidation (PROX) using near-stoichiometric amounts of O2. The conversion of CO should be over 99% while minimizing oxidation of H2. Supported Pt catalysts with and without promotion by Ce were compared for the catalytic oxidation of CO by O2 in a H2 stream. With unsupported Pt catalysts, selectivity (to CO2 as opposed to H2O) was highest at low temperatures and low O2/CO ratios, however conversion was low. Addition of Ce significantly improved CO conversion under these conditions.  相似文献

The obturator artery and vein are usually described as branches or tributaries of the internal iliac vessels although variations with connections to the external iliac or inferior epigastric vessels have been reported. Because these anomalous vessels are at risk in groin or pelvic surgeries that require dissection or suturing along the pelvic rim, we measured the frequency of these variations in 105 pelvic walls (45 in the United States and 60 in China). Our data show that 70-82% of pelvic halves and 83-90% of whole pelves had an artery, vein, or both in the variant position. Arteries were most often found in the normal position only but normal and anomalous veins were most frequently found together. These data show that it is far more common to find a vessel coursing over the pelvic rim at this site than not and have implications for both pelvic surgeons and anatomists.  相似文献

To understand the possible mechanisms of transmission of Aujeszky's disease virus (pseudorabies or PRV) from a feral pig reservoir, intranasal infections were initiated in domestic pigs and in pigs from a herd derived from captured feral pigs. Virus strains originating from feral pigs and from domestic pigs were compared. Similar shedding patterns were obtained in both feral-derived and domestic pigs, however, virus strains from feral pigs were markedly attenuated. Virus could be isolated after acute infection from nasal secretions, tonsils and occasionally from genital organs. In studies of transmission of PRV by cannibalism, either latently infected or acutely infected tissue was fed to both domestic and feral-derived pigs. In two similar experiments, latently infected tissue did not transmit virus, but tissues from acutely infected pigs did transmit infection. Cannibalism was observed typically in both types of pigs older than 6 weeks of age. It was concluded that transmission of PRV originating from feral pigs can occur by several mechanisms including the respiratory route and by cannibalism of pigs that die of acute infection. Transmission of PRV from feral swine may, however, result in sub-clinical infection.  相似文献

XX males and XY females have a sex reversal disorder which can be caused by an abnormal interchange between the X and the Y chromosomes. We have isolated and characterized a novel gene on the Y chromosome, PRKY. This gene is highly homologous to a previously isolated gene from Xp22.3, PRKX, and represents a member of the cAMP-dependent serine threonine protein kinase gene family. Abnormal interchange can occur anywhere on Xp/Yp proximal to SRY. We can show that abnormal interchange happens particularly frequently between PRKX and PRKY. In a collection of 26 XX males and four XY females, between 27 and 35% of the interchanges take place between PRK homologues but at different sites within the gene. PRKY and PRKX are located far from the pseudoautosomal region where XY exchange normally takes place. The unprecedented high sequence identity and identical orientation of PRKY to its homologous partner on the X chromosome, PRKX, explains the high frequency of abnormal pairing and subsequent ectopic recombination, leading to XX males and XY females and to the highest rate of recombination outside the pseudoautosomal region.  相似文献
