NMR studies on vortices in rotating3He-A

NMR measurements are reported on rotating³He-A in a long cylindrical geometry of 5 mm diameter at a liquid pressure of 29.3 bar and in axial magnetic fields of 14.2, 28.4, and 56.9 mT. At 28.4 mT, NMR studies are also reported in fields inclined by 25° and 90° from the axis of rotation. The frequency shift, the width, and the intensity of the spin wave modes localized on the soft vortex cores, as well as the additional broadening of the main NMR line during rotation, were measured as a function of temperature, angular velocity , magnetic field intensity, and its inclination angle. Also observed were a critical angular velocity of vortex formation, hysteretic behavior in the number of vortices when comparing accelerating rotation to decelerating, and metastable vortex densities, presumably a vortex tangle after rapid oscillatory acceleration. The results can be understood in terms of the continuous 4 vortices first proposed by Seppälä and Volovik.     

Magnetization and torque measurements on rotating niobium cylinders and ellipsoids

The magnetization and torque of niobium samples of different shapes rotating in a magnetic field are studied with emphasis on the behavior near the upper critical field H _c2. The observed rotational magnetization is free of hysteresis and is found to represent a good approximation to the thermodynamic equilibrium magnetization of the samples if pinning is not too strong and the frequency of rotation is sufficiently low. The viscous contribution to the torque exhibits a step at H _c2whose dependence on sample geometry is in good agreement with predictions derived under the simple assumption of a homogeneous arrangement of parallel straight vortices in the rotating sample.     

The influence of the extraction voltage on the energetic electron population of an electron cyclotron resonance ion source plasma

An influence of the extraction voltage on the high energy slope of bremsstrahlung radiation spectra has been reported in ECRIS experiments, which is not well understood so far. In order to provide more detailed data on this effect, we have measured bremsstrahlung radiation spectra accompanying especially the evolution of highly charge ions (i.e., by monitoring the Ar(14+) charge state) as the extraction voltage is changed from 0 to 20 kV, in dedicated experiments at the Frankfurt 14 GHz-ECRIS.     

Towards automated traceability maintenance

Traceability relations support stakeholders in understanding the dependencies between artifacts created during the development of a software system and thus enable many development-related tasks. To ensure that the anticipated benefits of these tasks can be realized, it is necessary to have an up-to-date set of traceability relations between the established artifacts. This goal requires the creation of traceability relations during the initial development process. Furthermore, the goal also requires the maintenance of traceability relations over time as the software system evolves in order to prevent their decay. In this paper, an approach is discussed that supports the (semi-) automated update of traceability relations between requirements, analysis and design models of software systems expressed in the UML. This is made possible by analyzing change events that have been captured while working within a third-party UML modeling tool. Within the captured flow of events, development activities comprised of several events are recognized. These are matched with predefined rules that direct the update of impacted traceability relations. The overall approach is supported by a prototype tool and empirical results on the effectiveness of tool-supported traceability maintenance are provided.     

Wear-resistant coatings for bearing applications

A report is given of the preparation and testing of ball bearings for operation under extreme conditions. The rings and balls were coated with hard materials such as TiC, TiN or Ti(C,N) using the chemical vapour deposition process. Such coated bearing elements have been used with success in ball bearings for nuclear reactors, namely in a helium atmosphere at 300 °C and in space applications in a vacuum of 10^?9 Torr.     

Aluminium and silicon base coatings for high temperature alloys—Process development and comparison of properties

The paper is concerned with systematic studies on the formation of overlay coatings on nickel and iron base superalloys to improve their resistance against high temperature oxidation and hot corrosion. In contrast to the simpler case of aluminizing nickel base alloys, the problems arising in aluminizing iron base superalloys and in siliconizing nickel base alloys have not yet been solved.A new and economical coating procedure is presented, which involves a reaction sintering process of unalloyed powder mixtures to obtain overlay coatings. The influence of the compositions of the layer and the substrate on the chemical compatibility of the whole layer composite is described in detail. It is shown that overlay coatings containing high concentrations of silicon can only be applied on nickel base superalloys if elements that are able spontaneously to form reaction barriers are present within the substrate alloy (e.g. aluminium) or in the as-preformed interlayer. Refractory metals have proved to be the most advantageous.To obtain a ductile coating, silicon-rich donor phases in the form of isolated precipitates were incorporated into a matrix containing low concentrations of silicon. These coating systems can also be applied to improve the aluminization of iron base alloys. The high temperature oxidation and corrosion behaviours of the coated samples were tested in burner gas or air at 1000°C and in molten salts at 900°C.     

Software specification using graph grammars

The following paper demonstrates that programmed sequential graph grammars can be used in a systematic proceeding to specify the changes of high level intermediate data structures arising in a programming support environment, in which all tools work in an incremental and syntax-driven mode. In this paper we lay stress upon the way to get the specification rather than on the result of this process. Therefore, we give here some approach to “specification engineering” using graph grammars. This approach is influenced by the syntactical definition of the underlying language for Programming in the Small, the module concept etc. to be supported on one side but also by the idea of the user interface.
