The functions of computable analysis are defined by enhancing normal Turing machines to deal with real number inputs. We consider characterizations of these functions using function algebras, known as real recursive functions. Since there are numerous incompatible models of computation over the reals, it is interesting to find that the two very different models we consider can be set up to yield exactly the same functions. Bournez and Hainry used a function algebra to characterize computable analysis, restricted to the twice continuously differentiable functions with compact domains. In our earlier paper, we found a different (and apparently more natural) function algebra that also yields computable analysis, with the same restriction. In this paper we improve earlier work, finding three function algebras characterizing computable analysis, removing the restriction to twice continuously differentiable functions and allowing unbounded domains. One of these function algebras is built upon the widely studied real primitive recursive functions. Furthermore, the proof of this paper uses our previously developed method of approximation, whose applicability is further evidenced by this paper. 相似文献

The autotrophic, sulfate-reducing bacterium, Desulfotomaculum orientis, grew in batch culture with molecular hydrogen (H2) as an energy source, carbon dioxide (CO2) as a carbon source and sulfur dioxide (SO2) as the terminal electron acceptor. At high H2 partial pressure, SO2 was stoichiometrically reduced to hydrogen sulfide (H2S). At low partial pressures of hydrogen (< 0.025 atm), SO2 was both oxidized to sulfate and reduced to hydrogen sulfide. These results indicated a new mode of sulfur metabolism for D. orientis. 相似文献

A laboratory investigation of the interface transmissivity is reported for five different geosynthetic clay liners (GCLs) and a range of different geomembranes (GMBs) for a range of stresses from 10 to 150?kPa. The GCLs were prehydrated under normal stress before permeation. The GCLs examined comprised three multicomponent (a smooth coated, a smooth laminated, and textured coated) and two conventional (one with granular and one with powdered sodium bentonite) GCLs. The effect of a 4?mm circular defect in the coating of a multicomponent GCL directly below the 10?mm diameter hole in the GMB is investigated. The effect of GMB stiffness and texture is examined. Additionally, the effect of hydration and permeation of smooth coated GCL with highly saline solution and synthetic landfill leachate (SL3) is presented. It is shown that the 2-week interface transmissivity (θ2-week) can be one to two orders of magnitude higher than steady-state interface transmissivity (θ steady-state) at low stresses (10?kPa–50?kPa), whereas at high stresses (150?kPa) the variation is substantially less. For a smooth coated GCL hydrated and permeated with reverse osmosis (RO) water, GMB stiffness and texture has a limited effect on interface transmissivity when the coating is placed in contact with GMB at normal stresses of 10?kPa–150?kPa, whereas coating indentations result in much high interface transmissivity when placed in contact with GMB. GCL prehydration and permeation with highly saline solutions leads to higher interface transmissivity compared to RO water. With a 4.0?mm defect in the coating, the interface transmissivity between the coating and woven geotextile is higher than that between the coating and GMB for the stress levels and GCL examined. 相似文献

A high density polyethylene geomembrane (GMB) stabilized with hindered amine (light) stabilizers (HALS or HAS) is immersed in four chlorinated water solutions with a simulated free chlorine concentration range of 0.5–5 ppm at five different temperatures (25, 40, 65, 75, and 85 °C) for 70 months. Standard and high pressure oxidative induction time (OIT) tests are performed to monitor antioxidants depletion while melt flow index, tensile, and stress crack resistance (SCR) tests are conducted to monitor degradation in physical and mechanical properties. Degradation in the GMB properties occurred shortly after immersion in chlorinated water at all temperatures except at 25 °C. Increasing the free chlorine concentration resulted in faster degradation of the tensile properties and SCR. The predicted time to nominal failure based on SCR ranges between 25 years at 40 °C and 5 years at 85 °C in chlorinated water (with 0.5 ppm free chlorine). A comparison between the degradation in SCR of this GMB and a GMB with a different resin and without HALS shows significant difference in their performance in chlorinated water but not in other incubation media. 相似文献

A numerical study of the behavior of geosynthetic-reinforced embankments constructed on soft rate-sensitive soil with and without prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs) is described. The time-dependent stress–strain-strength characteristic of rate-sensitive soil is taken into account using an elasto-viscoplastic constitutive model. The effects of reinforcement stiffness, construction rate, soil viscosity as well as PVD spacing are examined both during and following construction. A sensitivity analysis shows the effect of construction rate and PVD spacing on the short-term and long-term stability of reinforced embankments and the mobilized reinforcement strain. For rate-sensitive soils, the critical period with respect to the stability of the embankment occurs after the end of the construction due to a delayed, creep-induced, build-up of excess pore pressure in the viscous foundation soil. PVDs substantially reduce the effect of creep-induced excess pore pressure, and hence not only allow a faster rate of consolidation but also improve the long-term stability of the reinforced embankment. Furthermore, PVDs work together with geosynthetic reinforcement to minimize the differential settlement and lateral deformation of the foundation. The combined use of the geosynthetic reinforcement and PVDs enhances embankment performance substantially more than the use of either method of soil improvement alone. 相似文献

The Utah House in Kaysville, UT is a demonstration facility built and operated by Utah State University Cooperative Extension. It is designed to showcase alternative building techniques, with a focus on sustainable use of resources, energy and water conservation, healthy indoor air, and universal design. A survey was sent to visitors of the Utah House in January 2008. Questions were asked about knowledge of key topics, and engagement in selected pro-environmental behaviors, to determine if their visit to the house influenced their level of knowledge or more importantly, their behavior. Significant increases in self-reported knowledge were found for all five topic areas, indicating that the house was an effective educational tool. Differences in self-reported knowledge before the visit were found for gender and educational level, but mean ratings for all groups were essentially the same after the visit. Although many visitors had already engaged in at least one pro-environmental behavior before coming to the house (83%), a large percentage (63%) made at least one change as a result of their visit, indicating that the house was a catalyst for behavior change. Although several interesting correlations were found between knowledge, feelings and behavior, no strong predictor of behavior emerged. 相似文献

Understanding industries in terms of the concepts of chains, clusters and networks is becoming increasingly important in economies around the world. Supply chain management for an individual organization is an emerging field of research in the construction management discipline, but less attention has been devoted to investigating the nature of the construction supply chains and their industrial organizational economic environment. This selected review of construction and mainstream management supply chain literature is organized around four themes; distribution, production, strategic procurement management and industrial organization economics, and highlights the need to develop an industrial organization economic supply chain framework for construction. The merging of the supply chain concept with the industrial organization model as a methodology for understanding firm conduct and industry structure and performance is an important contribution to both construction supply chain and construction economic theory. Much of the industrial organization supply chain literature has tended to focus upon manufacturing industries, where typically firms are permanent organizations. This raises issues as to the differences between industries founded upon temporary compared with permanent organizations. There is potential for the development of an industrial organization methodology applicable to the project based industry. Ultimately industrial organization research seeks to have direct implications for industry performance and government policies. 相似文献

Project‐based construction workers in the Australian construction industry work long and irregular hours and experience higher levels of work‐to‐family conflict and burnout than office‐based workers, giving rise to an interest in alternative work schedules as a means of supporting work–life balance. Alternative work schedules were implemented in four case study construction projects in Australia. Interventions differed between projects, with two implementing a compressed work week, and the others introducing reduced hours schedules (one of which was optional). Data were collected from each case study project, using various combinations of focus groups, surveys, interviews and daily diary collection methods. The results were mixed. The compressed work week appears to have been favourably received where it was introduced. However, waged workers still expressed concerns about the impact on their weekly ‘take‐home’ pay. Attempts to reduce work hours by changing from a six‐ to a five‐day schedule (without extending the length of the working day between Monday and Friday) were less favourably received. Waged workers, in particular, did not favour reduced hours schedules. The results confirm the existence of two distinct labour markets operating in the Australian construction industry and markedly different responses to alternative work schedules, based upon whether workers are waged or salaried. The results clearly show that attempts to improve work–life balance must take the structural characteristics of the industry's labour markets into consideration in the design of interventions. The impact of alternative work schedules is likely to be moderated by institutional working time regimes within the construction industry. 相似文献

Water with Cl concentrations from 15 to almost 10,000 mg/kg, and molecular SO4/Cl ratios ranging from 0.003 to 1.87, drips periodically from the roof of Ruatapu cave and a side chamber, Rahu Rahu, located in the Orakei Korako geothermal field, Taupo Volcanic Zone, New Zealand. Pools in the bottom of both Ruatapu and Rahu Rahu contain sulfate–chloride waters with pH values ranging from 2.5 to 3.0; their Cl contents have varied temporally from 120 to 240 mg/kg and their molecular SO4/Cl ratios from 0.86 to 1.30. The Cl in the water dripping from the cave roof cannot come directly from the alkali chloride–bicarbonate water that circulates in the reservoir at Orakei Korako since the modern and historic piezometric surfaces are several meters below the cave roof. Nor does all the Cl in the cave pool waters derive from the reservoir fluid as the volume input required is incompatible with their Na and K contents. A more likely source for the Cl is one whereby rain water, percolating through the fractured rhyolitic country rock, dissolves Cl present either in glass shards or halite deposited in prehistoric times when trapped alkali chloride water boiled to dryness. Given that Cl in the cave pool waters is therefore supplied from a source above rather than, as previously assumed, below, the axiom that Cl present in acid sulfate–chloride ± bicarbonate waters is necessarily a signature of a deep water or magmatic input needs qualification. 相似文献

The effects of dietary vitamin E supplementation on tissue α-tocopherol (α-Toc) levels and on the susceptibility of fresh, frozen and vacuum-packaged beef to lipid oxidation and colour deterioration were investigated. Friesian cattle were fed diets containing 20 (basal, n=5) or 2000 (supplemented, n=5) IU (α-tocopheryl acetate/kg feed/day for approximately 50 days prior to slaughter. α-Toc levels were higher (p<0.05) in muscles from supplemented animals than from those on a basal diet. Significant differences in α-Toc levels were also observed between muscles from different treatment groups, the order of the supplemented group was: M. psoas major (PM)>M. longissimus dorsi (LD)>M. gluteus medius (GM) (p<0.05), and in the basal group the order was: PM>GM>LD (p<0.05). Supplemented fresh, frozen and vacuum packed beef showed greater colour and lipid oxidative stability than meat from the basal group after 7 days retail display at 4°C (p<0.05). Thus, dietary (α-Toc supplementation appeared to retard metmyoglobin and TBARS formation in LD, GM and PM and increased the colour shelf life of these muscles. 相似文献
