Asphalt exhibits Newtonian, non-Newtonian and viscoelastic behavior as the temperature is varied. This investigation reports the temperature at which asphalt exhibits non-Newtonian to Newtonian transition. Air blown, blended asphalt and petroleum pitch were tested at different aging conditions. The temperature at which the material exhibited shear rate independent viscosity was taken as the transition temperature. The transition temperature varied with processing method and aging conditions. It was seen that blended asphalt exhibited greater increase in apparent viscosity during aging when compared to air blown asphalt, whereas air blown asphalt showed greater shift in transition temperature for the same aging conditions. 相似文献

In the single rent-to-buy decision problem, without a priori knowledge of the amount of time a resource will be used we need
to decide when to buy the resource, given that we can rent the resource for $1 per unit time or buy it once and for all for
$c . In this paper we study algorithms that make a sequence of single rent-to-buy decisions, using the assumption that the resource
use times are independently drawn from an unknown probability distribution. Our study of this rent-to-buy problem is motivated
by important systems applications, specifically, problems arising from deciding when to spindown disks to conserve energy
in mobile computers [4], [13], [15], thread blocking decisions during lock acquisition in multiprocessor applications [7],
and virtual circuit holding times in IP-over-ATM networks [11], [19].
We develop a provably optimal and computationally efficient algorithm for the rent-to-buy problem. Our algorithm uses time and space, and its expected cost for the t th resource use converges to optimal as , for any bounded probability distribution on the resource use times. Alternatively, using O(1) time and space, the algorithm almost converges to optimal.
We describe the experimental results for the application of our algorithm to one of the motivating systems problems: the
question of when to spindown a disk to save power in a mobile computer. Simulations using disk access traces obtained from
an HP workstation environment suggest that our algorithm yields significantly improved power/ response time performance over the nonadaptive 2-competitive algorithm which is optimal in the worst-case competitive analysis
model.

Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) solar cells are gaining considerable interest due to their high optical absorption coefficient and adjustable band gap, which enables them to achieve high conversion efficiency and also present many promising applications in space power systems. In this paper we report the results of the effect of temperature and 8 MeV electron irradiation on the electrical characteristics of ZnO/CdS/Cu(In,Ga)Se2/Mo polycrystalline thin-film solar cells under forward and reverse bias studied in the temperature range 270-315 K. The solar cells were subjected to 8 MeV electron irradiation from the Microtron accelerator and were exposed to graded doses of electrons up to 75 kGy. I-V characteristics of the cells under dark and AM 1.5 illumination condition were studied before and after the irradiation. Capacitance measurements were also carried out at various frequencies before and after irradiation. In the measured temperature range, the dark current contribution is due to the generation-recombination of the minority carriers in the depletion region. The ideality factor is found to decrease with increase in temperature. It seems that electron irradiation has not altered the dark current conduction mechanism significantly. The effect of electron irradiation on the solar cell parameters such as fill factor (FF), conversion efficiency (η), saturation current (Io), short circuit current (Isc), open circuit voltage (Voc), and ideality factor (n) was studied. They were found to be stable up to 75 kGy of electron dose as only small changes were observed in the solar cell parameters. 相似文献

We studied the response to various realistic outdoor conditions of thin-film silicon-based triple-band-gap, triple-junction cells that were made in house. The triple-junction cells consist of a stack of proto-Si:H/proto-SiGe:H/nanocrystalline (nc)-Si:H cells in an n–i–p configuration, fabricated using hot-wire chemical vapour deposition (CVD). Current matching was determined for modeled spectra of four different days of the year that are typical for the northwestern European climate. Spectral modeling was based on measured irradiation data. The results showed that on a clear day in June, when the actual spectrum was closest to the reference AM1.5 spectrum, the matching was ideal. As the spectral shape varied during the course of the day with respect to the AM1.5 reference the matching became progressively worse. We found that the top cell (1.8 eV) and bottom cell (1.1 eV) are most sensitive to spectral changes, whereas the middle cell (1.5 eV) is less sensitive. Overall, it was evident that either cloudiness or seasonal variations led to an increase in current mismatch between the cells. If the sub-cells are closely matched, it may even occur that a cell designed to be current limiting no longer fulfills that role. 相似文献

The coal-derived gas from a coal gasifier contains multiple contaminants, and their synergistic effects may not be simply the additive influences of individual contaminants. The present work presents the results of a study of the synergistic effects of four contaminants of major concern—S, As, P, and Cl, at the ppm level and in combinations of two, three, or four kinds—on the performance of Ni-YSZ/YSZ/LSM solid oxide fuel cells. The results indicate that both cell performance and morphology differ significantly in cells exposed to a single contaminant, and that cell performance is not simply the additive influence of each contaminant. Synergistic effects can be very destructive (accelerated degradation or even cell failure) when S is in the presence with As/P, but can also be beneficial (stabilization in power density variations over time or a slowed degradation rate) when Cl is present with other contaminants. Cl can even partially restore performance loss when it is introduced after P is already present. Therefore, with the addition of Cl the tolerance limit of SOFCs for the other three contaminants can be greatly increased. We speculate that the affinity of the contaminants to Ni catalyst increases in the following order: As < P < Cl. The interactions between and among these contaminants and possible mechanisms for their destructive and beneficial synergistic effects are discussed. 相似文献

Oxidative damage is considered to be the primary cause of several aging associated disease pathologies. Cumulative oxidative damage tends to be pervasive among cellular macromolecules, impacting proteins, lipids, RNA and DNA of cells. At a systemic level, events subsequent to oxidative damage induce an inflammatory response to sites of oxidative damage, often contributing to additional oxidative stress. At a cellular level, oxidative damage to mitochondria results in acidification of the cytoplasm and release of cytochrome c, causing apoptosis. This review summarizes findings in the literature on oxidative stress and consequent damage on cells and tissues of the cardiovascular system and the central nervous system, with a focus on aging-related diseases that have well-documented evidence of oxidative damage in initiation and/or progression of the disease. The current understanding of the cellular mechanisms with a focus on macromolecular damage, impacted cellular pathways and gross morphological changes associated with oxidative damage is also reviewed. Additionally, the impact of calorific restriction with its profound impact on cardiovascular and neuronal aging is addressed. 相似文献

Chip-multiprocessor (CMP) architectures are a promising design alternative to exploit the ever-increasing number of transistors that can be put on a die. To deliver high performance on applications that cannot be easily parallelized, CMPs can use additional support for speculatively executing the possibly data-dependent threads of an application. For cross-thread dependences that must be handled dynamically, the threads can be made to synchronize and communicate either at the register level or at the memory level. In the past, it has been unclear whether the higher hardware cost of register-level communication is cost-effective. In this paper, we show that the wide-issue dynamic processors that will soon populate CMPs, make fast communication a requirement for high performance. Consequently, we propose an effective hardware mechanism to support communication and synchronization of registers between on-chip processors. Our scheme adds enough support to enable register-level communication without specializing the architecture toward speculation much. Finally, our scheme allows the system to achieve near ideal performance. 相似文献

This paper reports simulations of the generation of Lamb wave modes in thin plates using a meander coil (meander line) EMAT, which works under the principle of Lorentz force mechanism in non-magnetic materials. The numerical simulations have been compared with measurements. The numerical work presented in this paper is divided into two parts. First, a 2D electromagnetic model is developed for calculating the Lorentz force density, which is the driving force for elastic wave generation within the plate. Second, the calculated force at each point in the metal is used as the driving force for generating elastic wave modes in the plate. These calculated Lamb wave modes are compared with those generated experimentally in a thin plate. Additionally, the measured wave modes are analyzed with the help of dispersion curves and a time–frequency analysis. Our numerical work is also extended to analyze the interaction of Lamb wave modes with defects. The simulations compare favorably with the measurements presented here. 相似文献

We present a new hardware adaptive filter architecture for very high throughput LMS adaptive filters using distributed arithmetic (DA). DA uses bit-serial operations and look-up tables (LUTs) to implement high throughput filters that use only about one cycle per bit of resolution regardless of filter length. However, building adaptive DA filters requires recalculating the LUTs for each adaptation which can negate any performance advantages of DA filtering. By using an auxiliary LUT with special addressing, the efficiency and throughput of DA adaptive filters can be of the same order as fixed DA filters. In this paper, we discuss a new hardware adaptive filter structure for very high throughput LMS adaptive filters. We describe the development of DA adaptive filters and show that practical implementations of DA adaptive filters have very high throughput relative to multiply and accumulate architectures. We also show that DA adaptive filters have a potential area and power consumption advantage over digital signal processing microprocessor architectures. 相似文献
