Near infrared (NIR) light, which spans wavelengths from ~700-1100 nm holds particular promise in bionanotechnology-enabled applications because both NIR light and nanoparticles (NPs) have the potential for remote activation leading to exquisite localization and targeting scenarios. In this study, aqueous solutions of carbon and metal-based NPs (carbon black, single-walled carbon nanotubes, silver nanoparticles and copper nanoparticles) were exposed to continuous NIR laser (λ = 1064 nm) irradiation at powers of 2.2W and 4.5W. The differential heating of bulk aqueous suspension of NPs with varying physicochemical properties revealed maximum temperatures of 67 °C with visible evidence of condensation and bubble formation. The basis of the NP heating is due to the strong intrinsic optical absorbance in the NIR spectral window and the transduction of this NIR photon energy into thermal energy. In this regard, UV-vis measurements can accurately predict NP heating kinetics prior to NIR irradiation. Further, a uniform thermodynamic heating model demonstrates close agreement with the experimental data for the low NIR-absorbing NPs. However, the uniform thermodynamic heating model used in this study does not accurately portray the energy release upon localized NP heating because of bubble formation for the highly absorbing NPs. Therefore, this study reveals the differential heating kinetics of NPs excited with NIR with implications in the development of novel NIR-NP-based systems. 相似文献

A series of 34 nitrogen-containing compounds with a wide range of basicities was examined under differential nonaqueous potentiometric conditions in acetophenone and nitrobenzene. These compounds could be resolved into five classes based on pKaand half-neutralization-potential (HNP) values. Asphaltenes isolated from the vacuum still overhead (VSO) and vacuum still bottoms (VSB) fractions of the H-coal process were titrated under similar conditions. The titration results of both asphaltenes indicated the presence of two classes of nitrogen-containing compounds, a titratable class of the pyridine-ring or aniline type and a nontitratable class. 相似文献

The goal of this investigation was to determine the effects of allelochemicals on plant respiration that thereby may be responsible for their role in growth inhibition. We have tested the effects of juglone, quercetin, cinnamic acid, and-pinene on respiration rates, and electron partitioning through the cytochrome and alternative respiratory pathways, by measuring on-line oxygen consumption and oxygen isotope fractionation in soybean cotyledon tissue. Cinnamic acid and-pinene decreased the oxygen consumption rate and increased the relative partitioning of electron transport to the alternative pathway. The interaction of lipid peroxides with cellular proteins has been postulated to contribute to cellular aging. A potential
target for such effects is tubulin, the building block of microtubules. We examined the concentration-dependent effects of
phosphatidylcholine hydroperoxides on the ability of tubulin to polymerize into microtubules. The results demonstrated that
even very low concentrations of peroxides were sufficient to interfere with the tubulin and, therefore, the microtubule function.
Decreased tubulin activity (as measured by tubulin GTPase activity) showed correlation with the modification of methionine
and cysteine in tubulin and a change in the tubulin conformational state as indicated by fluorescence and ultraviolet spectroscopic
measurements. As no effect on electric conductivity was observed, indicating that modulation of ionic binding was not involved,

We analyzed seven years of pre‐program and post‐program survey data to evaluate the Clarkson University Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Site Program in Environmental Science and Engineering, and evaluated whether our program was successful at meeting the intended outcome of increasing participants' likelihood of attending graduate school and pursuing a career in science or engineering research or education. We also evaluated how participant satisfaction in the program changed with the addition of a weekly seminar on environmental sustainability that was intended to improve participants' understanding of the societal value of their research projects. Participant satisfaction in the Clarkson REU Program was high, and increased after the addition of the sustainability seminar. Participants' intention to attend graduate or professional school increased after participating in the program, but their intention to pursue a career in science or engineering research declined. Over 60 percent of participants eventually attended graduate or professional school. 相似文献

This review summarises progress in Raman spectroscopy and its application in diagnostics, toxicological testing and tissue engineering. Applications of Raman spectroscopy in cell biology are in the early stages of development, however, recent publications have demonstrated its utilisation as a diagnostic and development tool with the key advantage that investigations of living cells can be performed non-invasively. Some of the research highlighted here demonstrates the ability of Raman spectroscopy to accurately characterise cancer cells and distinguish between similar cell types. Many groups have used Raman spectroscopy to study tissues, but recently increased effort has gone into single cell analysis of cell lines; the advantages being that cell lines offer ease of handling and increased reproducibility over tissue studies and primary cells. The main goals of bio-Raman spectroscopy at this stage are twofold. Firstly, the aim is to further develop the diagnostic ability of Raman spectroscopy so it can be implemented in a clinical environment, producing accurate and rapid diagnoses. Secondly, the aim is to optimise the technique as a research tool for the non-invasive real time investigation of cell/material interactions in the fields of tissue engineering and toxicology testing. 相似文献

This paper is based on the premises that the purpose of engineering education is to graduate engineers who can design, and that design thinking is complex. The paper begins by briefly reviewing the history and role of design in the engineering curriculum. Several dimensions of design thinking are then detailed, explaining why design is hard to learn and harder still to teach, and outlining the research available on how well design thinking skills are learned. The currently most‐favored pedagogical model for teaching design, project‐based learning (PBL), is explored next, along with available assessment data on its success. Two contexts for PBL are emphasized: first‐year cornerstone courses and globally dispersed PBL courses. Finally, the paper lists some of the open research questions that must be answered to identify the best pedagogical practices of improving design learning, after which it closes by making recommendations for research aimed at enhancing design learning. 相似文献

Tunneled dialysis catheter–associated right atrial thrombus (RAT) is a rarely reported complication. We reviewed hospital records of 10 patients from a teaching hospital dialysis unit, in whom RAT was diagnosed by trans‐esophageal echocardiography (TEE). Patients were treated with chronic anticoagulation (heparin followed by warfarin) and followed over time. The group included 7 women; 6 patients were African American, 3 were Caucasian, and 1 was Hispanic. The average age was 52.1 ± 15.3 years. The most common presenting symptom was poor catheter flow on hemodialysis followed by fever and chills. On average, the patients had had 3.4 ± 2.7 catheter insertions before diagnosis of RAT, and the tunneled dialysis catheter (TC) had been in place for a mean of 91 ± 89.4 days when the thrombi were diagnosed. Trans‐thoracic echocardiography (2‐D echo) was done in 4 patients, but it identified RAT in only 1 patient. The catheter tip was at the junction of the superior vena cava and right atrium (SVC/RA) in most patients. Thrombolysis (unsuccessful) was attempted with urokinase in 3 patients, complicated in 2 patients by hemorrhage. After anticoagulation, 90% of the RAT resolved on repeated TEE. One patient had persistent RAT for 23 weeks and underwent surgical thrombolysis, but died postoperatively. We conclude that RAT is a frequently missed complication of a TC. Positioning the tip of the TC at the SVC/RA junction may not prevent RAT. Trans‐esophageal echocardiography is a more sensitive diagnostic tool than 2‐D echo and should be obtained early. Most patients can be successfully treated with anticoagulation alone. Thrombolytic therapy and surgical thrombolysis have high morbidity and mortality. 相似文献

A research center in the College of Medicine assisted the Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Department in the assessment of occupational health and safety instruction in the undergraduate agricultural engineering curriculum. An interdisciplinary team developed a questionnaire to explore three facets of health and safety instruction: 1) content and placement in the curriculum, 2) reasons for teaching occupational health and safety, and 3) adequacy of teaching resources. The questionnaire was pilot tested using agricultural engineering faculty and technicians from a large land grant university. Responses to the questionnaire revealed strengths and weaknesses in the curriculum regarding occupational health and safety instruction. The questionnaire will be expanded and further tested with a broader subject base. This cooperative effort demonstrates that medical schools can be a valuable resource to engineering schools who are looking for ways to improve occupational health and safety instruction in their curricula. 相似文献
