Kinetics of sol-gel formation were studied using the recently developed near-infrared (NIR) multispectral imaging instrument. This imaging spectrometer possesses all the advantages of conventional spectrometers. It also has additional features that NIR spectrometers cannot offer, namely, its ability to provide kinetic information at different positions within a sample. The high spatial resolution and sensitivity of the InSb camera make it possible for the imaging spectrometer to determine the kinetic from data recorded by a single pixel. Kinetics of sol-gel reactions, determined by this multispectral imaging instrument, show that the initial hydrolysis of the TEOS, MTES, or a mixture of these two alkoxysilanes is relatively inhomogeneous. The inhomogeneity is dependent on the number of pixels used to calculate the spectrum for each spot. Data calculated from a single pixel provide the largest inhomogeneity. No inhomogeneity was observed when an average of a large number of pixels (e.g., 10 x 10) is used for calculation. The inhomogeneities observed for TEOS sol-gels are different from those for the MTES sol-gels, and those for sol-gels prepared from a mixture of TEOS and MTES are relatively larger and more similar to those of the MTES sol-gels. A variety of reasons might account for the observed inhomogeneities including differences in the structure of the TEOS sol-gels and MTES sol-gels and the inability of the TEOS to mix well with MTES with the latter being more hydrophobic. 相似文献

Determination of binding constants of cyclodextrins in room-temperature ionic liquids by near-infrared spectrometry 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Near-infrared spectrometry has been successfully used to determine association binding constants between phenol and alpha-, beta- and gamma-cyclodextrin (CD) in [butylmethylimidazolium][chloride] room-temperature ionic liquid (RTIL). It was found that adding CD into the RTIL solution of phenol resulted in an enhancement in the absorption coefficient of the stretching overtone of the aromatic C-H groups. However, the enhancement induced by CDs in RTIL is much lower (order of magnitude) than those corresponding in D20. The binding constants in RTIL are also much lower than those in D2O ((11 +/- 2), (16 +/- 2), and (40 +/- 6) M(-1) for phenol and alpha-, beta- and gamma-CD, respectively, as compared to 87 and 214 M(-1) for a- and beta-CD in D2O). The results obtained seem to suggest that in ionic liquid, the main interaction between phenol and CDs may not be inclusion complex formation but rather external adsorption. A variety of reasons may be responsible for relatively weaker interactions and lower binding constants in the ionic liquid, including differences in the polarity and viscosity of RTIL and D20. However, the main reason may be due to the possibility that the 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium cation of the ionic liquid may form inclusion complexes with CDs either through its imidazolium moiety or its butyl group. A new method has been developed that is based on the use of a single-excitation wavelength from a cw laser to excite simultaneously one-photon and two-photon fluorescence (TPF). Fluorescence bands of a sample containing two oligonucleotides, one labeled with a one-photon fluorescence dye and the other with a TPF dye, can be measured simultaneously. The two fluorescence bands are well separated, because the one-photon excited fluorescence band is redshifted, whereas the TPF band is blueshifted from the excitation wavelength. The spectral separation was found to be as large as 200 nm when ADS 840NCS was used to label one oligonucleotide for one-photon fluorescence and Rhodamine Red-X dye was used for TPF. Spectral overlapping problem that plagues current DNA sequencing techniques can be eliminated effectively with this method. 相似文献

Mobility, channel error, and congestion are the main causes for packet loss in mobile ad hoc networks. Reducing packet loss typically involves congestion control operating on top of a mobility and failure adaptive routing protocol at the network layer. In the current designs, routing is not congestion-adaptive. Routing may let a congestion happen which is detected by congestion control, but dealing with congestion in this reactive manner results in longer delay and unnecessary packet loss and requires significant overhead if a new route is needed. This problem becomes more visible especially in large-scale transmission of heavy traffic such as multimedia data, where congestion is more probable and the negative impact of packet loss on the service quality is of more significance. We argue that routing should not only be aware of, but also be adaptive to, network congestion. Hence, we propose a routing protocol (CRP) with such properties. Our ns-2 simulation results confirm that CRP improves the packet loss rate and end-to-end delay while enjoying significantly smaller protocol overhead and higher energy efficiency as compared to AODV and DSR 相似文献

The kinetics of curing of an epoxy resin by amine was studied using a near-infrared (NIR) multispectral imaging spectrometer. This imaging spectrometer is capable of sensitively and rapidly recording NIR spectral images of a sample because it was constructed with an acousto-optic tunable filter and an InGaAs focal plane array NIR camera. The high sensitivity and fast scanning ability of the spectrometer make it suitable for kinetic determination of fast reactions. Additionally, it has features that conventional NIR spectrometers cannot offer, namely, its ability to provide kinetic information at different positions within a sample. Furthermore, the high spatial resolution and sensitivity of the InGaAs camera make it possible to determine the kinetics from data collected by a single pixel in the camera. The kinetics of curing of epoxy by amine, determined by this multispectral imaging instrument, show that the reaction rates within the sample are very inhomogeneous. Because of this kinetic inhomogeneity, differences in the degrees of cure at different positions within the sample can be as high as 37% when data from only a single pixel were used for calculation. The fact that insulin-producing islet beta-cells are susceptible to the cytotoxic effects of inflammatory cytokines represents a potential hinderance to the use of such cells for transplantation therapy of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). In the current study, we show that IL-1beta induces destruction of INS-1 insulinoma cells, while having no effect on a second insulinoma cell line RIN1046-38 and its engineered derivatives, and that this difference is correlated with a higher level of expression of manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) in the latter cells. Stable overexpression of MnSOD in INS-1 cells provides complete protection against IL-1beta-mediated cytotoxicity, and also results in markedly reduced killing when such cells are exposed to conditioned media from activated human or rat PBMC. Further, overexpression of MnSOD in either RIN- or INS-1-derived lines results in a sharp reduction in IL-1beta-induced nitric oxide (NO) production, a finding that correlates with reduced levels of the inducible form of nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). Treatment of INS-1 cells with L-NMMA, an inhibitor of iNOS, provides the same degree of protection against IL-1beta or supernatants from LPS-activated rat PBMC as MnSOD overexpression, supporting the idea that MnSOD protects INS-1 cells by interfering with the normal IL-1beta-mediated increase in iNOS. Because NO and its derivatives have been implicated as critical mediators of beta-cell destruction in IDDM, we conclude that well regulated insulinoma cell lines engineered for MnSOD overexpression may be an attractive alternative to isolated islets as vehicles for insulin replacement in autoimmune diabetes. 相似文献

Aerobic exercise and normotensive adults: a meta-analysis 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Using the meta-analytic approach, the purpose of this study was to examine the effects of aerobic exercise on resting systolic (SYS) and diastolic (DIA) blood pressure in normotensive adults: The results of 35 human clinical training studies published in English-language journals between 1963 and 1992 and representing 1,076 subjects (800 exercise, 276 control) met criteria for inclusion. Across all categories and designs, statistically significant post-exercise reductions were found for both SYS and DIA blood pressure (mean +/- SD, SYS: -4.4 +/- 6.6 mm Hg, 95% CI, -6.2 to -2.6 mm Hg; DIA: -3.2 +/- 3.2 mm Hg, 95% CI, -4.0 to -2.2 mm Hg). When partitioned according to type of study: 1) (randomized controlled trials (RCT), 2) controlled trials (CT), and 3) no controls (NC), the following changes were noted: RCT, SYS: -4.5 +/- 7.2 mm Hg, 95% CI, -7.1 to -1.2 mm Hg; DIA: -3.8 +/- 2.9 mm Hg, 95% CI, -5.0 to -2.6 mm Hg; CT, SYS: -2.8 +/- 6.9 mm Hg, 95% CI, -10.0 to 4.4 mm Hg; DIA: -5.0 +/- 3.7 mm Hg, 95% CI, -8.9 to -1.1 mm Hg; NC, SYS: -4.7 +/- 6.1 mm Hg, 95% CI, -7.5 to 1.9 mm Hg; DIA: -1.7 +/- 3.0 mm Hg, 95% CI, -3.2 to -0.36 mm Hg. The ability of ultrasound to produce highly controlled tissue erosion was investigated. This study is motivated by the need to develop a noninvasive procedure to perforate the neonatal atrial septum as the first step in treatment of hypoplastic left heart syndrome. A total of 232 holes were generated in 40 pieces of excised porcine atrial wall by a 788 kHz single-element transducer. The effects of various parameters [e.g., pulse repetition frequency (PRF), pulse duration (PD), and gas content of liquid] on the erosion rate and energy efficiency were explored. An Isppa of 9000 W/cm2, PDs of 3, 6, 12, and 24 cycles; PRFs between 1.34 kHz and 66.7 kHz; and gas saturation of 40-55% and 79-85% were used. The results show that very short pulses delivered at certain PRFs could maximize the erosion rate and energy efficiency. We show that well-defined perforations can be precisely located in the atrial wall through the controlled ultrasound tissue erosion (CUTE) process. A preliminary in vivo experiment was conducted on a canine subject, and the atrial septum was perforated using CUTE. 相似文献

This paper presents a new solution to the expert system for reliable heartbeat recognition. The recognition system uses the support vector machine (SVM) working in the classification mode. Two different preprocessing methods for generation of features are applied. One method involves the higher order statistics (HOS) while the second the Hermite characterization of QRS complex of the registered electrocardiogram (ECG) waveform. Combining the SVM network with these preprocessing methods yields two neural classifiers, which have been combined into one final expert system. The combination of classifiers utilizes the least mean square method to optimize the weights of the weighted voting integrating scheme. The results of the performed numerical experiments for the recognition of 13 heart rhythm types on the basis of ECG waveforms confirmed the reliability and advantage of the proposed approach. 相似文献

The phenomenon of intersample contamination in air-segmented continuous-flow assays has been studied for many years, and new uses are being found for these sampling techniques every day. One application that has been developed recently employs a flow cytometer to conduct high-throughput screening assays of biological compounds. We have explored the sources of intersample contamination in the system and shown how methods developed previously can be applied to describe these phenomena. Using a simple model, we were able to accurately measure liquid film thickness in the sample tubing and demonstrate the effects of intersample contamination in a flow cytometer assay. Also, measures have been taken to reduce the level of intersample contamination in cytometric screening assays, helping to make the system a more viable tool for drug screening applications. 相似文献
