Ultra-wideband (from DC to 110 GHz) CPW to CPS transition

A new ultra-wideband, low-loss and small-size coplanar waveguide (CPW) to coplanar strip (CPS) transition which can be used from DC to 110 GHz is presented. The proposed transition connects CPW with CPS by the reformed air-bridge. Two ground planes of CPW are tied at their ends by a line and the centre of the line is connected to the ground strip of CPS by another line. Owing to the symmetry of the proposed structure, the currents of two ground planes of CPW are combined with the same phase and transferred to the ground strip of CPS. With height of 3 μm, the signal line of CPW passes over two connecting lines and is connected to the signal strip of CPS. For the back-to-back transition structure, insertion loss <1 dB and return loss >15 dB are obtained from 0.5 to 110 GHz     

Preparation of core–shell type nanoparticles of diblock copolymers of poly(L‐lactide)/poly(ethylene glycol) and their characterization in vitro

Core–shell type nanoparticles of poly(L ‐lactide)/poly(ethylene glycol) (LE) diblock copolymer were prepared by a dialysis technique. Their size was confirmed as 40–70 nm using photon correlation spectroscopy. The ¹H‐NMR analysis confirmed the formation of core–shell type nanoparticles and drug loading. The particle size, drug loading, and drug release rate of the LE nanoparticles were slightly changed by the initial solvents that were used. The drug release behavior of LE core–shell type nanoparticles showed an initial burst during the first 12 h and then a sustained release until 100 h. The degradation behavior of LE block copolymer nanoparticles was divided into three phases: the initial rapid degradation phase, the stationary phase, and the rapid degradation phase until complete degradation. It was suggested that lidocaine release kinetics were predominantly governed by the diffusion mechanism in the initial burst phase and after that by both of the diffusion and degradation mechanisms. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Knowledge, attitude and behavior among patients with Chlamydia. Perspectives for prevention

Patients with chlamydial infections (Ct) attending the outpatient Venereal Disease Clinic of Copenhagen from July 1-November 30 1995 were asked to fill in a questionnaire focusing upon knowledge, attitude and behaviour related to sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in order to strengthen the future prevention of Ct. The questionnaire was answered by 37 men and 35 women with a median age of 27 and 21 years and a median number of three and two sexual partners within the last six months, respectively. Half of the patients had previously had an STD, and 92% had been tested for HIV, of whom one homosexual man was known HIV-positive. Notification about exposure from a partner was the reason for attending for 24%. All but one were in favour of partner notification, but only 6% wanted provider referral. During last intercourse condoms had neither been used with a steady partner by 75% especially by the young and women, who thought themselves safe, nor with a casual partner by 52% especially among the young and men, mainly because of thoughtlessness or perception of low risk. Before the actual STD diagnosis only 49% were able to name one symptom and 35% one complication related to Ct. A majority (79%) stated, that fear of catching another Ct would lead to better protection, and 70% found that more information would have a preventive effect. Future Ct prevention programs in Denmark should include intensified chlamydial screening and partner notification together with centrally produced mass media information supplemented by individual counselling.     

Design aspects of planar and conventional SMPS transformer: a cost benefit analysis

The intent of this paper is to design a high-frequency transformer that is to be incorporated into the DC/DC pulsewidth-modulated switch-mode power supplies by two different technical approaches: a conventional wound-coil magnetic using copper wires, and a planar magnetic with layered copper tracks on laminated printed circuit board. Comparisons will be made between the two approaches in terms of profile: mounting height and surface area, and performance: power losses and efficiency. Other indicators like temperature rise and leakage inductance that causes electromagnetic interference, and cost, materials, and process fluency are also to be looked into. A sandwiched configuration for primary and secondary windings is proposed for the planar type. Issues arising and typical phenomena encountered will be discussed in detail. Primarily, the dominating factor in performance, cost effectiveness, or circuit compactness that restrains the choice of a particular type is to be evaluated.     

Effect of Feathery Mottle Virus Infection on Sweet Potato Sensory Properties

Four sets of sweet potato clones obtained by meristem tip culture were used to investigate the effect of feathery mottle virus (FMV) infection on the appearance, sensory quality and chemical composition of the storage roots. This study, encompassing four generations, indicated that FMV infection had a slight effect on carbohydrate metabolism but no effect on the polyphenoloxidase-phenol system. Flavor and texture profile analyses indicated that for one clone, FMV-infected roots were more desirable when baked than healthy roots. Considering the study as a whole, FMV infection did not appear to adversely affect sweet potato sensory properties. Clones produced from the same parent by meristem tip culture might have different compositional and sensory properties.     

Characterization of a lectin-like protein isolated from Lachesis muta snake venom

A lectin-like protein was isolated from L. muta venom by gel filtration on BIO Gel P-100 followed by column Chromatography on DEAE-sephades A-50. The protein eluted at 0.4 M Nacl in 0.01 Tris pH 7.3 and exhibited agglutinin activity toward 0+ human erythrocytes. The protein is a dimer with Mr 28 kDa. Amino acid analysis revealed high content of tryptophan and acid recidues and low content of cysteine and methionine residues. No neutral carbohydrates and sialic acid were detected. Circular dichroic spectrum shows 78% of B structure and 1% of alpha structure. In vitro experiments with erythrocytes from rat, rabbit and dog revealed strong agglutination while red blood cells from mice, sheep and goat were not agglutinated. In vivo experiments using anesthetized rats, a sharp and prolonged fall in the blood pressure was observed at protein dose of 1.5 mg/kg. Double dose of protein caused the death of the animal.
