PURPOSE: The relative biological effectiveness (RBE) for inactivation of V79 cells was determined as function of dose at the Heidelberg 14-MeV (d + T) neutron therapy facility after irradiation with single doses in air and at different depths in a therapy phantom. Furthermore, to assess the reproducibility of RBE determinations in different experiments we examined the relationship between the interexperimental variation in radiosensitivity towards neutrons with that towards low LET 60Co photons. METHODS: Clonogenic survival of V79 cells was determined using the colony formation assay. The cells were irradiated in suspension in small volumes (1.2 ml) free in air or at defined positions in the perspex phantom. Neutron doses were in the range, Dt = 0.5-4 Gy. 60Co photons were used as reference radiation. RESULTS: The radiosensitivity towards neutrons varied considerably less between individual experiments than that towards photons and also less than RBE. However, the mean sensitivity of different series was relatively constant. RBE increased with decreasing dose per fraction from RBE = 2.3 at 4 Gy to RBE = 3.1 at 0.5 Gy. No significant difference in RBE could be detected between irradiation at 1.6 cm and 9.4 cm depth in the phantom. However, an approximately 20% higher RBE was found for irradiation free in air compared with inside the phantom. Combining the two effects, irradiation with 0.5 Gy free in air yielded an approximately 40% higher RBE than a dose of 2 Gy inside the phantom. CONCLUSION: The measured values of RBE as function of dose per fraction within the phantom is consistent with the energy of the neutron beam. The increased RBE free in air, however, is greater than expected from microdosimetric parameters of the beam and may be due to slow recoil protons produced by interaction of multiply scattered neutrons or to an increased contribution of alpha particles from C(n, alpha) reactions near the surface. An enhanced RBE in subcutaneous layers of skin combined with an increase in RBE at low doses per fraction outside the target volume could potentially have significant consequences for normal tissue reactions in radiotherapy patients treated with fast neutrons.  相似文献

A high-sensitivity flat-coil inductive proximity sensor microsystem has been realized and successfully tested. The flat coil, made with CMOS-compatible post processes, is connected to a versatile differential relaxation oscillator electronic interface. In this new and simple interface, the excitation, the signal extraction and amplification are assured by only one operational amplifier. Experimental results on the microsystem confirm that large output frequency variations occur when a metallic target approaches the sensor.  相似文献

A composed morphology of iron oxide microstructures covered with very thin nanowires (NWs) with diameter of 15–50 nm has been presented. By oxidizing metallic Fe microparticles at 255 °C for 12 and 24 h, dense iron oxide NW networks bridging prepatterned Au/Cr pads are obtained. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies reveal formation of α‐Fe2O3 and Fe3O4 on the surface and it is confirmed by detailed high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy and selected area electron diffraction (SAED) investigations that NWs are single phase α‐Fe2O3 and some domains of single phase Fe3O4. Localized synthesis of such nano‐ and microparticles directly on sensor platform/structure at 255 °C for 24 h and reoxidation at 650 °C for 0.2–2 h, yield in highly performance and reliable detection of acetone vapor with fast response and recovery times. First nanosensors on a single α‐Fe2O3 nanowire are fabricated and studied showing excellent performances and an increase in acetone response by decrease of their diameter was developed. The facile technological approach enables this nanomaterial as candidate for a range of applications in the field of nanoelectronics such as nanosensors and biomedicine devices, especially for breath analysis in the treatment of diabetes patients.  相似文献

Epidemiological studies indicate a correlation of cruciferous vegetables consumption with reduced incidence of cancer. This study was designed to investigate molecular mechanisms, which may help to understand the beneficial effects of Brussels sprout consumption. In order to avoid the limitations of in vitro model systems, we performed a dietary intervention study with five participants. We investigated, whether sprout consumption affects the proteome profile of primary white blood cells. In order to achieve maximal sensitivity in detecting specific adaptive proteome alterations, we metabolically labelled freshly isolated cells in the presence of 35S‐methionine/cysteine and performed autoradiographic quantification of protein synthesis. Proteins were separated by 2‐DE and spots of interest were cut out, digested and identified by MS. After the intervention, we found a significant up‐regulation of the synthesis of manganese superoxide dismutase (1.56‐fold) and significant down‐regulation of the synthesis of heat shock 70 kDa protein (hsp70; 2.27‐fold). Both proteins play a role in malignant transformation of cells. Hsp‐70 is involved in the regulation of apoptosis, which leads to elimination of cancer cells, while SOD plays a key role in protection against reactive oxygen species mediated effects. Our findings indicate that the alteration of the synthesis of these proteins may be involved in the anticarcinogenic effects of cruciferous vegetables, which was observed in earlier laboratory studies with animals.  相似文献

Scholars who study close relationships often measure the same concept with both observational ratings and questionnaire items. In studies where this has been done, the correlations between the two measures have often been low, and one reason may be a "context by measurement" confound. Observational ratings are usually based on behaviors during a specific task, whereas most questionnaire responses are based on a broader context such as "during the past month." In 2001, a total of 292 young couples were videotaped during a discussion task and asked to report on their own behavior and that of their partner during the discussion task and during the past month. The data were configured as a multitrait, multimethod matrix, and the magnitudes of the correlations were estimated with confirmatory factor analysis. The resulting correlations between observer ratings and questionnaire reports of hostile behavior during the videotaped discussion were roughly twice the magnitude of the correlations between observer rating and questionnaire reports during the past month. This suggests that the correspondence between behavioral categories and the content of questionnaire items is greater than previous studies have indicated. A scaled rock cutting test developed at the Chair of Subsurface Engineering, Montanuniversität Leoben, is presented. It is designed as an attachment for hydraulic presses commonly available in rock mechanics laboratories. Rotating disc cutters are used to cut rock samples several times with the possibility to adjust indentation depth and spacing. Standard sample sizes which are available in early phases of a tunnelling project are used in order to enable this test to be used for TBM performance prediction. The results are compared to geotechnical standard tests and full scale linear cutting tests. It is shown that the results of scaled rock cutting tests are excellent input parameters for TBM performance prediction.  相似文献

The use of complex vector notation provides a way of comparing the performance of controller topologies through their complex vector root locus and complex vector frequency-response functions. The article describes the chronology of events of the recent EHEC O104:H4 outbreak from the perspective of food inspection in Schleswig-Holstein until the National Task Force EHEC was founded. Taking the district of Schleswig-Flensburg as an example, the collaboration and information exchange between health and food control authorities is described. The Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Areas of Schleswig-Holstein (MLUR) received the first information about clusters of disorders with symptoms of bloody diarrhoea and HUS from the districts around Hamburg and the city of Hamburg on 19 May 2011. On the same day, the veterinary services and the service for consumer protection in the district of Schleswig-Flensburg were informed about a situation comparable to the one in the environment of Hamburg. Due to this situation, official procedures were initiated to discover the origins of this food-associated outbreak - both at the state and county level and in collaboration with the health authorities. On 1 June 2011, an initial telephone conference was held between the responsible ministries and the food inspection and health authorities of the counties and cities in order to coordinate a joint action. On 3 June 2011, the National Task Force EHEC was founded at the Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) in Berlin. By founding the National Task Force EHEC, the coordination of the clearing process was passed over to the BVL two weeks after the public health authorities had knowledge of accumulated and cross-border cases. On 7 June 2011 an employee of the district Schleswig-Flensburg was sent to the Task Force EHEC in Berlin by the MLUR. The lesson to be learned as a result of the EHEC O104:H4 outbreak is that among the ??dangerous foods?? there are more plant-based foods than often assumed. A combined gel-casting and hot-pressing method was used to fabricate platelet-reinforced polymer matrix composites. Submicrometer thin alumina platelets were dispersed in a highly diluted polymer solution. A thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer was used as matrix for its high elasticity and excellent adhesion to the platelets. After dissolution of the polymer and casting, quick evaporation of the solvent triggered the formation of a polymer gel trapping the platelets in their well dispersed positions. The polymer–platelet gel densified during drying and the platelets were oriented horizontally due to the capillary forces and the large decrease in the thickness of the gel. The dried composites were hot-pressed to further improve the platelet orientation along the shear flow and close potential pores in the polymer. While the ultimate tensile strength of the composites gradually decreased with increasing platelet volume fractions, the increase in the elastic modulus and the stress necessary to deform the composite 10% was more than 100 and 18 times higher than the respective values of the pure polymer. The use of alumina platelets with an aspect ratio below the critical value allowed for the ductile platelet pull-out fracture mode. Since the polymer had to deform more to achieve identical deformation of the composite at higher platelet volume fraction, the strain at rupture steadily decreased. The incorporation of voids towards high platelet concentrations and the thereby triggered crack initiation and growth during straining lead to an additional decrease in the elasticity of composites with increasing platelet volume fractions. However, the extremely high extensibility of a polymer matrix allowed for the fabrication of composites that still deformed up to 162 ± 19% at platelet volume fractions as high as 0.33. When compared to other platelet-reinforced elastomers, the achieved platelet volume fraction is much higher and the relative increase in elastic modulus and stress at low strains is therefore much larger at the expense of a decrease in the strain at rupture. The fabrication method and designing principles employed in this study are transferable to other types of polymers and platelets and potentially allow the creation of new composites with tailored properties.  相似文献
