First evidence of the presence of S-cysteinylated and S-glutathionylated precursors in tannins

Tannins are widely used in winemaking and food and beverage preparation for the many different contributions they can give to the overall characteristics of the product (e.g., colour stability, mouthfeel and aromatic composition). Varietal thiols and their precursors are one of the most interesting research areas in food science and a lot of effort has been put to further the current understanding on their formation and on the impact of different production strategies on their concentration in the final product.     

High survival of frozen cells irradiated with gamma radiation

Cell storage in liquid nitrogen (LN) offers the most secure method of cell preservation even if cryopreserved cells are exposed to natural background of ionising radiation (IR). A lot of experiments have demonstrated that IR can induce damages in living cells, but only a little information regarding the response of cryopreserved cells is available. To investigate the effect of IR on frozen and unfrozen cells, peripheral blood mononuclear cells were directly irradiated at room temperature, then immediately frozen, or frozen and then irradiated in LN with different doses of gamma rays. After thawing, cells were incubated and death fraction was evaluated at different time points. Interestingly, the percentages of dead cells induced by IR gradually increased with both dose radiation and incubation time and were significantly lower for cells irradiated at -196°C than those irradiated at room temperature.     

Protein kinase CK2 activities in human prostatic and seminal-vesicle secretions and seminal plasma

Human prostatic secretion and seminal plasma contain certain protein kinase activities. Protein kinases play important roles in regulating a vast variety of cellular functions. The objective of this study was to determine whether one of these protein kinase activities in human prostatic secretion and seminal plasma is due to CK2, a messenger-independent, serine/threonine protein kinase that has considerable potential as a regulatory enzyme. By employing an anti-CK2 antibody and a CK2-specific peptide substrate, we have established that CK2 is present in these secretions. Approximately 70% of the CK2 activity present in seminal plasma of normozoospermic men (n = 49) is correlated to the number of sperm originally present in the semen. Further, both the prostate gland and the seminal vesicles are sources of CK2 activity in the seminal plasma of vasectomized men (n = 38). Although there was considerable variation between individuals in CK2 activity, the variation in repeat semen samples of the same vasectomized men (n = 6) was within 21%. There was no correlation of CK2 activity in seminal plasma with age for vasectomized (27-48 years, n = 38), oligozoospermic (28-43 years, n = 24), or normozoospermic men (26-48 years, n = 49). These data suggest that the majority of CK2 activity in the seminal plasma of normozoospermic men originates from sperm but that the prostate and seminal vesicles are accessory sex-gland sources of this enzyme.     

CESIUM ADSORPTION WITH ZEOLITES FROM NUCLEAR HIGH SALT CONTENT ALKALINE WASTES

The sorption of cesium with zeolites was investigated from an alkaline nuclear waste containing sodium aluminate and sodium nitrate. Isotherms at different temperatures and for different sodium concentrations have been assessed; kinetics was investigated in batch tests. Break through curves are reported both for laboratory and pilot plant columns. For a high salt content alkaline solution (MCE) a capacity of 1 mg of Cs per gram of zeolite was found in fixed bed column operation at room temperature.     

Fusion of classifiers for illumination robust face recognition

In this paper the problem of face recognition under variable illumination conditions is considered. Most of the works in the literature exhibit good performance under strictly controlled acquisition conditions, but the performance drastically drop when changes in pose and illumination occur, so that recently a number of approaches have been proposed to deal with such variability.The aim of this work is twofold: first a survey on the existing techniques proposed to obtain an illumination robust recognition is given, and then a new method, based on the fusion of different classifiers, is proposed. The experiments carried out on different face databases confirm the effectiveness of the approach.
