As in many Latin–American countries, in Mexico many older adults live alone as a result of the migration of one or more of their relatives, mostly to the USA. Thus, not only do they live alone, but they might seldom see these relatives for long periods, even though they often depend on them financially. With the goal of designing appropriate communication technology for seniors and their relatives experiencing this situation, we conducted interviews and evaluated scenarios and prototypes to reveal the practical ways they maintain emotional ties despite the distance. Based on those findings, we envisioned a communication system through which seniors and their relatives can maintain close social ties by sharing information, personal reminiscences and stories. We found that older adults perceived the system as a richer, natural form of communication with their relatives that could facilitate their integration into the networks that currently connect members of their families. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: Caffeine ranks as one of the top most commonly consumed dietary ingredients throughout the world. It is naturally found in coffee beans, cacao beans, kola nuts, guarana berries, and tea leaves including yerba mate. The total daily intake, as well as the major source of caffeine varies globally; however, coffee and tea are the 2 most prominent sources. Soft drinks are also a common source of caffeine as well as energy drinks, a category of functional beverages. Moderate caffeine consumption is considered safe and its use as a food ingredient has been approved, within certain limits, by numerous regulatory agencies around the world. Performance benefits attributed to caffeine include physical endurance, reduction of fatigue, and enhancing mental alertness and concentration. Caffeine has also been recently linked to weight loss and consequent reduction of the overall risks for developing the metabolic syndrome. However, the caloric contribution of caffeine-sweetened beverages needs to be considered in the overall energy balance. A novel carbon paste electrode containing chitosan microspheres for the determination of Cu(II) in instant coffee by anodic stripping voltammetry was developed. Chitosan was crosslinked with the chelating agent 8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulphonic acid and glutaraldehyde. The microspheres of the crosslinked chitosan biopolymer were obtained by the spray drying technique and employed in the construction of the sensor. In acetate buffer solution (0.1 mol L−1, pH 6.0), the calibration curve obtained was linear for concentrations of 5.0 × 10−7 to 1.4 × 10−5 mol L−1 (r = 0.9990); the detection limit was 5.5 × 10−8 mol L−1. The relative standard deviation (n = 8) was lower than 3.0% for solutions containing 6.0 × 10−6, 5.0 × 10−5 and 1.5 × 10−4 mol L−1 of Cu(II). The method was successfully employed for determination of Cu(II) in instant coffee and the results obtained showed good agreement when compared with those using electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry. 相似文献

A collaborative study was carried out to determine the repeatability (error in each laboratory) and reproducibility (error between the different laboratories) of the fatty acid analysis of Iberian pig fat by gas chromatography. To do this, a comparison was made, in accordance with the ISO 5725-2 procedure, of the weight percentage (%) of the main fatty acids (C16:0, C18:0, C18:1 and C18:2) in 60 samples, determined by six laboratories. The results obtained for the relative standard deviation of the repeatability (0.56, 0.49, 0.29, and 0.69%) and for the relative standard deviation of the reproducibility (3.04, 3.54, 1.78 and 2.86%) show that the accuracy obtained is adequate for this analysis method, and in the same order or even higher than that obtained by other authors in similar samples. The differences between the results obtained on using two extraction methods of liquid fat from subcutaneous adipose tissue were recorded with no significant differences being observed between them. 相似文献

There are many applications in aeronautical/aerospace engineering where some values of the design parameters/states cannot
be provided or determined accurately. These values can be related to the geometry (wingspan, length, angles) and or to operational
flight conditions that vary due to the presence of uncertainty parameters (Mach, angle of attack, air density and temperature,
etc.). These uncertainty design parameters cannot be ignored in engineering design and must be taken into the optimisation
task to produce more realistic and reliable solutions. In this paper, a robust/uncertainty design method with statistical
constraints is introduced to produce a set of reliable solutions which have high performance and low sensitivity. Robust design
concept coupled with Multi-Objective Evolutionary Algorithms (MOEAs) is defined by applying two statistical sampling formulas;
mean and variance/standard deviation associated with the optimisation fitness/objective functions. The methodology is based
on a canonical evolution strategy and incorporates the concepts of hierarchical topology, parallel computing and asynchronous
evaluation. It is implemented for two practical Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) design problems; the first case considers robust
multi-objective (single-disciplinary: aerodynamics) design optimisation and the second considers a robust multidisciplinary
(aero-structures) design optimisation. Numerical results show that the solutions obtained by the robust design method with
statistical constraints have a more reliable performance and sensitivity in both aerodynamics and structures when compared

This article explores the strategies used by Israeli students to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the interactive computer game, PeaceMaker. Students played PeaceMaker in the roles of both the Israeli Prime Minister and the Palestinian President in random order. Students must take actions satisfying constituents on both sides of the conflict in order to win the game. The diversity of actions taken in each role was measured. Several hypotheses test the degree to which Israeli students, depending on which role they played and their own demographic variables, exploited a consistent set of actions or explored a more diverse range of actions across three main types: construction, political, and security. The results show that (1) greater action diversity increases success in both roles, (2) Israeli students engaged in less diverse actions when playing the Israeli role than when playing the Palestinian role, (3) students’ religiosity and political Hawkishness negatively predicted action diversity when playing the Palestinian role, and (4) action diversity mediates the relationship between a student’s background knowledge about the conflict and success in the Israeli role. The significance of these findings for understanding attitudes about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict are discussed, including implications for conflict resolution more generally. 相似文献

Carbon supported Pt and Pt-Ni (1:1) nanoparticles were prepared by reduction of metal precursors with NaBH4. XRD analysis indicated that only a small amount of Ni alloyed with Pt (Ni atomic fraction in the alloy about 0.05). The as-prepared catalysts were submitted to chronoamperometry (CA) measurements to evaluate their activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). CA measurements showed that the ORR activity of the as-prepared Ni-containing catalyst was higher than that of pure Pt. Then, their stability was studied by submitting these catalysts to durability tests involving either 30 h of constant potential (CP, 0.8 V vs. RHE) operation or repetitive potential cycling (RPC, 1000 cycles) between 0.5 and 1.0 V vs. RHE at 20 mV s−1. After 30 h of CP operation at 0.8 V vs. RHE, loss of all non-alloyed Ni, partial dissolution of the Pt-Ni alloy and an increase of the crystallite size was observed for the Pt-Ni/C catalyst. The ORR activity of the Pt-Ni/C catalyst was almost stable, whereas the ORR activity of Pt/C slightly decreased with respect to the as-prepared catalyst. Loss of all non-alloyed and part of alloyed Ni was observed for the Pt-Ni/C catalyst following repetitive potential cycling. Conversely to the results of 30 h of CP operation at 0.8 V vs. RHE, after RPC the ORR activity of Pt-Ni/C was lower than that of both as-prepared Pt-Ni/C and cycled Pt/C. This result was explained in terms of Pt surface enrichment and crystallite size increase for the Pt-Ni/C catalyst. 相似文献

A high temperature ethanol-fed polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell has been implemented by using H3PO4-doped m-polybenzimidazole as polymeric electrolyte. Commercial Pt/C, PtRu/C and Pt3Sn/C catalysts are used in the anode. The performance was assessed in terms of polarization curves at different temperatures, feeding the cell with a high concentration ethanol solution (water/ethanol mass ratio of 2). The product distribution was measured with the support of a gas chromatograph. The use of bimetallic catalysts increased the current density. PtRu/C showed the best performance up to 175 °C, but it is outperformed by Pt3Sn/C at 200 °C. In terms of oxidation products, higher temperatures and current densities favour the oxidation of ethanol. However, Pt3Sn/C promoted the generation of more oxidized products compared to PtRu/C (in which most of the ethanol is oxidized to acetaldehyde), especially at high temperature. This accounts for the large current density. In terms of complete oxidation of ethanol to CO2, Pt/C was by far the most efficient catalyst for C–C scission, achieving percentages of 56 % of CO2, although operating above 175 °C dramatically boosted an undesirable methanation process that slashed the efficiency. The combination of fuel cell results and product distribution helped to suggest the different oxidation routes on the surface of the different catalysts. 相似文献
