Analysis of a soliton-based logic module for a ring network

We analyze and numerically study the code-matching logic module that is the central element in a proposed soliton-based ring network system running at peak rates of 100 Gb/s. The proposed network is packet-switched, and fast logic is required to route each packet. That is the function of the code-matching logic module, and four soliton logic gates that can perform fast logic are the key devices in its design. The behavior of the code-matching logic module is governed by a large set of parameters, and we simulate it by varying many of these parameters. The physical effects that occur in these devices and their significance are analyzed. The results indicate that the logic module will work but within a restricted parameter range     

Integrated access to heterogeneous data from NCBI

The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) was created by Congress in 1988 to provide a stable government entity with a leadership role in coping with the information issues associated with this field. The NCBI Software Toolkit permits software tools to be developed in a heterogeneous environment. The use of abstract syntax notation (ASN.I) allows one to specify and exchange data across systems, and to reach biologists in whatever system they choose to work. However, the relevant data are still accumulated by different groups with different data models, different quality standards, in different subject domains, and with different time courses. NCBI has designed a data model to define a number of key data elements for molecular biology, including bibliographic data, nucleic acid sequence, protein sequence, genetic and physical maps, and the information about them. The model was constructed in as much detail as possible to accommodate the data contained in the heterogeneous sources, while still maintaining a common model     

An overview of the Telecommunications Information NetworkingArchitecture

The Telecommunications Information Networking Architecture (TINA) Consortium is an international collaboration aiming at defining and validating an open architecture for telecommunication services for the broadband, multimedia, and information era. The architecture is based on distributed computing, object orientation, and other concepts and standards from the telecommunications and computing industries. This paper provides an introduction to TINA. First, it presents an overall view of TINA, followed by a brief introduction to the main parts of the architecture, namely the computing, network, service, and management architectures. This is followed by a brief overview of interworking and migration scenarios for legacy systems. Finally, an overview of a tool-set to aid service specification and design is presented     

Growth of CuInSe2 by metallorganic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD): new copper precursor

Metallorganic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD) of Cu-In-Se ternary compounds is performed in a horizontal reactor at atmospheric pressure. A copper precursor has been specially developed for this purpose and is used around room temperature. It is hexafluoroacetylacetonato copper mixed with trimethylamine (Cu(hfa)₂, NMe₃). The other source materials are triethylindium (TEIn), trimethylindium (TMIn) and hydrogen selenide (H₂Se). Experimental parameters are detailed and related to the film composition. Properties of thin films are also investigated in the whole range of compositions obtained.     

A study of solid circulation rate in a circulating fluidized bed

An experimental investigation under cold condition was made to study the effects of some operating/design parameters and non-mechanical L valve configuration on the solid circulation rate in a 4.5 m tall, 0.15 m diameter circulating fluidized bed with riser flow rate varying from 1400 litres/min to 2000 litres/min and bed inventory from 15 kg to 25 kg of sand of average sizes 200 μm, 400 μm and 500 μm. Solid circulation rate was estimated by measuring velocity of sand particle travelling through a vertical Perspex tube section at the bottom of the return leg. It was found to be in the range of 2.8 to 12.3kg/m²s, 0.07 to 9.1kg/m²s and 0.12 to 2.23kg/m²s for sand sizes of 200 μm, 400 μm and 500 μm, respectively for a horizontal L valve. Two mathematical correlations have been developed from the experimental results to predict solid circulation rate as a function of riser flow rate, aeration flow rate, total bed inventory and particle size used.     

Sheep pulmonary adenomatosis: a unique model of retrovirus-associated lung cancer

Sheep pulmonary adenomatosis (SPA) is a contagious bronchiolo-alveolar carcinoma of sheep associated with an exogenous type D/B retrovirus known as jaagsiekte sheep retrovirus (JSRV). SPA represents a unique model for lung cancer, and studies on its aetiopathogenesis can provide further insight into the mechanisms of epithelial neoplasms.     

Lens antennas for mobile broadband systems in the millimetre-waverange

An improved antenna for a wireless mobile broadband system (e.g. as realised by Bosch as a demonstrator) is proposed. By means of a shaped dielectric lens the radiation pattern of a primary antenna (e.g. a short helical structure) can be shaped to optimise the power distribution across an indoor cell. The calculated performance of lenses designed for the 30 and 60 GHz bands by using geometric optics shows good agreement with measured results
