Nutritional aspects of soft drinks

The metabolic consequences in man, both immediate and long term, of consuming soft drinks are discussed. Emphasis is placed on the role in energy and lipid metabolism of various carbohydrate constituents, on the effects on gastric emptying of the various constituents and on the biochemical implications of fructose containing drinks.     

A proximal femoral implant preserves physiological bone deformation: a biomechanical investigation in cadaveric bones

The aim of this study was to compare the perturbances in bone deformation patterns of the proximal femur due to a conventional cemented femoral stem and a novel uncemented implant designed on the principles of osseointegration. Five matched pairs of fresh frozen human femora were mechanically tested. Bone deformation patterns, measured with a video digitizing system under 1.5 kN joint force, showed that the cemented Spectron femoral implant caused significant alterations to the proximal femoral deformation pattern, whereas the Gothenburg osseointegrated titanium femoral implant did not significantly alter the bone behaviour (p < 0.05). Vertical micromotions measured under 1 kN after 1000 cycles were within the threshold of movement tolerable for bone ingrowth (21 microm for the Gothenburg system and 26 microm for the cemented implant).     

The use of channel flow cells for electrochemical kinetic studies in high temperature aqueous solutions

It has been shown that, for the case of one-step reactions of arbitrary order, the relationship between the average current density and the limiting current density on a working electrode mounted on the inner radius of an annular flow channel of arbitrary length obeys, with great accuracy, the same relations as does a reaction on a uniformly accessible surface. This allows us to combine the advantages of non-uniformly accessible surfaces (high sensitivity, and no need to use rotating contacts) with the advantages of uniformly accessible surface systems (simple treatment of experimental data). This feature can be very important when investigating systems at high temperatures and pressures, where RDEs are difficult to employ. Using this approach, and by employing previously measured polarization data, the kinetic parameters (exchange current density and anodic transfer coefficient) for the oxidation of hydrogen on platinized nickel in 0.1 M NaOH + 0.7 × 10⁻³ m H₂ at temperatures between 25 °C and 300 °C have been derived. The anodic transfer coefficient is found to be almost temperature independent with a value of 0.43. The exchange current density displays Arrhenius behavior with temperature, increasing from 1.9 × 10⁻⁴ A cm⁻² at 25 °C to 3.9 × 10⁻³ A cm⁻² at 300 °C.     

Formation and crosslinking of latex films through the reaction of acetoacetoxy groups with diamines under ambient conditions

We investigated the processes of film formation, polymer diffusion, and crosslinking of latex films at ambient temperature, using low T_g methacrylate latex bearing acetoacetoxy groups, and curing the systems with 1,6-hexanediamine as the crosslinker. The addition of diamine induces floc formation, which modifies the rheological properties of the dispersion and increases its drying rate when coated onto a substrate. The crosslinking reaction between diamine and acetoacetoxy groups occurs at a rapid rate, even in the dispersed state. Although the crosslinking reaction precedes polymer diffusion in the two systems we examined, latex films with relatively good solvent resistance are obtained. The relationship between alcohol consumption patterns and car, work, sports and home accidents for different age groups

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between alcohol consumption patterns and car, work, sports and home accidents for different age groups. A secondary analysis of data from a randomized household survey of 10385 Canadians was conducted. Overall, alcohol consumption patterns were significantly associated with car collisions, work and sports accidents for younger age groups (i.e. 15-24 and 25-34), but this relationship was not significant for the older age groups.     

Interaction of L-glutamic acid with human T-lymphocytes

A specific interaction of [3H]Glu with T lymphocytes from the blood of healthy donors (Kd = 0.236 microM) was revealed and described. It was found that unlabeled quisqualate, a structural analogue of L-glutamic acid, and unlabeled dipeptides Ala-Glu, Glu-Ala, and Glu-Glu competitively inhibit the specific binding of [3H]Glu to T lymphocytes (with Ki 0.19, 2.4, 3.4, and 1.2 microM, respectively). Binding experiments with conjugates of labeled and unlabeled glutamic acid with dextran showed that the receptors of [3H]Glu are localized on the outer surface of the plasma membrane of T lymphocytes.
