The effect of feeding to achieve differential growth rates in Holstein-Friesian (HF; n = 259) and Jersey (n = 430) heifers on time to puberty and first lactation milk production was investigated in a 3 × 2 factorial design. Holstein-Friesian and Jersey calves were reared to achieve a BW of 100 and 80 kg, respectively, at 100 d. At target weight, all calves were randomly allocated to one of 3 feeding treatments to achieve different growth rates. Holstein-Friesian and Jersey calves were fed fresh pasture to achieve average daily growth rates of 0.77, 0.53, or 0.37 kg of BW/d (HF) and 0.61, 0.48, or 0.30 kg of BW/d (Jersey), respectively. Period 1 (prepubertal) was imposed until HF and Jersey treatment groups averaged 200 and 165 kg of BW, respectively. Following period 1, HF and Jersey calves from each treatment group were randomly allocated to one of 2 feeding treatments to achieve average daily growth rates of 0.69 or 0.49 kg of BW/d (HF) and 0.58 and 0.43 kg of BW/d (Jersey), respectively. Period 2 (postpubertal) was imposed until 22 mo, when heifers were returned to their farms of origin. Body weight, body condition score, height, heart girth circumference (HGC), milk production, and fertility-related data were collected until the end of the third lactation. Time to reach puberty was negatively associated with level of feeding, and heifers attained puberty at the same BW (251 ± 25.4 and 180 ± 24.0 kg for HF and Jersey heifers, respectively). Heifers on high feed allowances during periods 1 and 2 were heavier, taller, and had greater HGC than their slower grown counterparts until 39 mo of age when height and HGC measurements stopped. Body weight differences remained until 51 mo, when measurements ceased. High feed allowance during period 1 (prepubertal) did not affect milk production during the first 2 lactations, but did reduce milk production in lactation 3. It is possible that the expected negative effect of accelerated pre-pubertal growth was masked by greater calving BW, as BW-corrected milk yield declined in both breeds with increasing prepubertal feed allowance. Growth rate during period 2 was positively correlated with first lactation milk production. Milk yield increased 7% in first lactation heifers on the high feed allowance, which resulted in higher growth rate during period 2. Milk production during subsequent lactations was not affected. Results suggest that accelerated prepubertal growth may reduce mammary development in grazing dairy cows, but this does not affect milk production in early lactations because of superior size. Body weight at calving and postpubertal growth rate management are important in first lactation milk production, but do not affect milk production in subsequent lactations.  相似文献

The objective of the present study was to identify and quantify relationships among dairy cow body condition score (BCS) and body weight (BW) and production variables in pasture-based, seasonal-calving herds. More than 2,500 lactation records from 897 spring-calving Holstein-Friesian and Jersey dairy cows were used in the analyses. Six variables related to BCS and BW, including observations precalving, at calving, and nadir as well as days to nadir and change precalving and between calving and nadir were generated. An exponential function was fitted within lactation to milk and 4% fat-corrected milk (FCM) yield data to model lactation curves. The milk production variables investigated were the parameters of the fitted function as well as accumulated yield of milk and FCM at 60 and 270 days in milk and average milk composition. Mixed models were used to identify BCS and BW variables that significantly affected milk production. After adjusting for the fixed effect of year of calving, parity, and days dry, milk and FCM yields were nonlinearly associated with calving and nadir BCS, increasing at a declining rate up to BCS 6.0 to 6.5 (10-point scale; approximately 3.5 in the 5-point scale) and declining thereafter. However, there was very little increase in milk and FCM yields above a calving BCS of 5.0 (approximately 3.0 in the 5-point scale). Average milk fat content over 60 and 270 days in milk was positively correlated with increasing calving and nadir BCS. In comparison, milk protein percentage was not influenced by calving BCS but was positively associated with nadir BCS and negatively associated with BCS lost between calving and nadir. The effect of BW and changes in BW were similar to the effect of BCS, although the scale of the effect was breed-dependent. For example, milk and FCM yield increased linearly with increasing calving BCS, but the effect was greater in Holstein-Friesians compared with Jersey cows. The results are consistent with the literature and highlight the important role that BCS and BW loss has on milk production, irrespective of the system of farming.  相似文献

Eight years of gaseous elemental mercury (GEM) concentration measurements from Alert, Nunavut, Canada (between 1995 and 2002) is presented. The annual time series shows a distinct repeating seasonal pattern with an overall annual median concentration for this time period of 1.58 (S.D.=0.04 ng m(-3)). Strong seasonal variation was observed throughout the years with springtime displaying strong variability in the GEM and overall lower median concentrations due to the so-called mercury depletion events (MDEs). Summer concentrations are higher than the annual average and show a decrease in variability. Fall and winter concentrations are distributed around the annual median concentrations and show little variability. The relationship between the springtime depression and the summer increase shows a change in the behaviour of mercury between 1995 and 2002. Preliminary results suggest that during this period an increasing amount of the mercury lost from the atmosphere in the spring is not returned to atmosphere in summer. A comparison of GEM concentration data from three sites--Alert (Canada), Amderma (Russia) and Kuujjuarapik (Canada)--demonstrated similar monthly distribution of GEM between Alert and Amderma, with the latter not showing as high summer concentrations. Monthly distribution of GEM at Kuujjuarapik varied considerably from the other two sites. MDEs were found to occur at each site in the spring yet displayed different characteristics. MDEs appear to start at Alert shortly after polar sunrise but in Amderma their initiation is delayed approximately 2 months following polar sunrise. MDEs occur in Kuujjuarapik in the springtime despite an incomplete development of the polar day-night cycle. In spring, as soon as air temperature attained temperatures consistently above 0 degrees C, MDEs ended immediately at all three sites. Continued studies into MDEs are warranted, but clearly an important component of future studies must focus on the origins of the variation of GEM behaviour at different sites.  相似文献

Imaging localized plasmon modes in noble-metal nanoparticles is of fundamental importance for applications such as ultrasensitive molecular detection. Here, we demonstrate the combined use of optical dark-field microscopy (DFM), cathodoluminescence (CL), and electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) to study localized surface plasmons on individual gold nanodecahedra. By exciting surface plasmons with either external light or an electron beam, we experimentally resolve a prominent dipole-active plasmon band in the far-field radiation acquired via DFM and CL, whereas EELS reveals an additional plasmon mode associated with a weak dipole moment. We present measured spectra and intensity maps of plasmon modes in individual nanodecahedra in excellent agreement with boundary-element method simulations, including the effect of the substrate. A simple tight-binding model is formulated to successfully explain the rich plasmon structure in these particles encompasing bright and dark modes, which we predict to be fully observable in less lossy silver decahedra. Our work provides useful insight into the complex nature of plasmon resonances in nanoparticles with pentagonal symmetry.  相似文献

The degradation kinetics of five glutamine dipeptides in aqueous solution, i.e. glycyl-L-glutamine (Gly-Gln), L-alanyl-L-glutamine (Ala-Gln), L-valyl-L-glutamine (Val-Gln), L-leucyl-L-glutamine (Leu-Gln) and L-isoleucyl-L-glutamine (Ile-Gln), were studied. Stability tests were performed using a stability-indicating high-performance liquid chromatographic assay. Two different Ala-Gln degradation routes, i.e. the cleavage of a peptide bond and the deamination of an amide group, were observed. The degradation was adequately described by pseudo-first-order kinetics. The maximum stability of Ala-Gln was obtained at an approximate pH of 6.0. The pH-rate profile described by specific acid-base catalysis and hydrolysis by water molecules agreed with the experimental results. The activation energy of Ala-Gln at pH 6.0 was determined to be 27. 1kcal mol-1, and the shelf-life (90% remaining) at 25 and 40 degrees C was predicted to be 5.3 years and 7.1 months, respectively. The rate constants of the glutamine dipeptides were influenced by the N-terminal amino acid residue and decreased in the order: Gly-Gln, Ala-Gln, Leu-Gln, Val-Gln and Ile-Gln.  相似文献

Millipore HPC samplers are simple, self-contained test devices that can be used by personnel in dental offices who do not have microbiologic training to easily and economically monitor dental unit water quality without laboratory support. This study evaluated the correlation of HPC samplers to R2A agar for enumerating planktonic bacteria in dental unit treatment water. Eight different dental units were sampled. Five replicates were performed for each media at each dilution. The Pearson correlation coefficient between the R2A agar and HPC sampler is 0.89. These data suggest HPC samplers correlate with conventional laboratory-based R2A culture techniques for determining dental unit water line contamination.  相似文献

Fatigue of reinforced ceramics at elevated temperatures was numerically evaluated with a fiber dominated, power-law creep model. A Monte Carlo simulation of fiber creep in a uniaxially loaded tow was used to examine the influence of fiber radius, elastic modulus, and strength on creep respose. The simulation permitted variation of both the average magnitude and dispersion of fiber characteristics while maintaining constant power-law creep parameters. A linear increase in creep life was predicted for an increase in mean fiber radius, and a linear decrease in creep life was predicted for an increase in the standard deviation of fiber radii. A linear increase in creep life was predicted for both an increase in mean fiber elastic modulus and standard deviation of elastic moduli. Characteristic fiber strength and Weibull modulus were predicted to have a significant effect on creep life of a SiC fiber low. An increase in either the characteristic strength or Weibull modulus was predicted to result in an increase in creep life.  相似文献

The issues pertaining to groundwaterdrought are reviewed with particular regard to the historical and present situations in Malawi, northern Ghana and the Northern Province of South Africa. These three quite different examples highlight some of the major difficulties facing respective governmentsand donor agencies, not least the shortcomingsof drought-reliefdrilling programmes,the general lack of routine monitoring and the need for longer term analysis and assessment of groundwatersystems than is currently possible. The distinct character of groundwater systems and their reaction to prevailing and changing environmentalconditions is discussed, and it is argued that essentially predictable variations in groundwater drought vulnerability are rarely planned for or acted upon. Managementissues arising are discussed and it is suggested that governments,and particularly donors, should place more emphasis on longer term, pre-droughtmitigation measures to reduce the need for costly and sometimes ineffective emergency interventions.  相似文献
