Clinical experience of trabeculotomy for the surgical treatment of aniridic glaucoma

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to determine the efficacy of initial trabeculotomy in the patient with aniridic glaucoma. DESIGN: Clinical charts were reviewed. PARTICIPANTS: Twenty-nine eyes of 16 patients with aniridia were studied. INTERVENTION: Glaucoma surgery was performed. As an initial procedure, trabeculotomy was performed in 12 eyes, other surgery was performed in 17 eyes (trabeculectomy, 5; goniotomy, 5; other, 7). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Success was defined as an intraocular pressure (IOP) of 21 mmHg or lower, and no further surgery was performed. RESULTS: Ten (83%) of 12 eyes obtained IOP control after first (6 eyes) or second (4 eyes) trabeculotomy with a mean follow-up period of 9.5 years. Five eyes maintained visual acuity of 20/40 to 20/200. No serious complications were found after trabeculotomy. Three (18%) of 17 eyes were controlled with the first glaucoma surgery other than trabeculotomy (goniotomy, trabeculectomy, trabeculectomy combined with trabeculotomy, and Molteno implant). Good IOP control was obtained in 8 (47%) of 17 eyes after several surgeries with a mean follow-up period of 10.4 years. Four of 17 eyes became phthisical. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that trabeculotomy is the preferred initial operation for uncontrolled glaucoma with aniridia.     

Large granular lymphocytic leukemia. Case report with scarce expression in peripheral blood

Evidence is rapidly emerging which suggests that uncoupling protein 2 (UCP2), by virtue of its ubiquitous expression, may be important for determining basal metabolic rate. To assess the functional modulation of UCP2 gene expression in relation to body weight control, we examined the effects of hyperthyroid state induced by chronic treatment with triiodothyronine (T3) on UCP2 mRNA expression in male rats. Daily subcutaneous injection of T3 (37 pmol/100 g body weight) for 7 days increased UCP2 mRNA expression in brown adipose tissue (BAT), white adipose tissue (WAT) and the soleus muscle 1.6-, 1.6- and 1.7-fold compared to the controls, respectively, and increased UCP1 mRNA expression in BAT 1.2-fold. In contrast, the same treatment with T3 decreased both ob mRNA expression in WAT and plasma leptin level 0.5-fold for each. The present results suggest that T3 may directly increase UCP2 expression independently of leptin action.     

Using a real-time integrated communication system to monitor the progress and quality of construction works

Site monitoring is an indispensable procedure in construction quality control. It does not only minimize construction defects and human errors but also supports project team members making strategic decisions at critical points throughout the construction stages. This paper presents a cost-effective construction site monitoring system integrating a long-range wireless network, network cameras, and a web-based collaborative platform. The system supports simultaneous user access therefore project team members could view real-time captured images or video of a construction site, discuss and exchange ideas with gadgets such as video conference, text and shared whiteboard at a distance via the Internet. It was carefully configured in order to maintain the reliability under the reactive conditions of the construction sites. The system has been implemented and tested on two construction sites and promising results were obtained.     

The effects of long‐term exposure of flax fiber reinforced polymer to salt solution at high temperature on tensile properties

Most research on natural fiber composites has been primarily conducted on randomly‐oriented fibers. This study is focused on the short‐ and long‐term performances of flax fiber‐reinforced polymer (Flax‐FRP) made from continuous unidirectional fiber mats, and compares it to Glass‐FRP composite. The study looked into the effect of number of layers on properties, comparing wet layup (WL) to vacuum bag (VB) molding, and aging in a 3.5% salt solution for up to 365 days at 23, 40, and 55°C. Results show that Flax‐FRP has a tensile strength and modulus of one third the values of Glass‐FRP. Using the VB process, Flax‐FRP showed a strength and modulus 18 and 36% higher, respectively, than WL specimens. As the number of layers increased from one to five, the strength and modulus also increased but stabilized at three layers. After 365 days of conditioning at 23, 40, and 55°C, WL specimens showed a strength retention of 81, 73, and 69%, respectively. Using the Arrhenius relationship, it was estimated that both WL and VB Flax‐FRP would retain 60% of their tensile strength after 100 years of saltwater exposure at an annual mean temperature of 10°C. Systematic analysis and cancellation of kickback noise in a dynamic latched comparator

A dynamic latched comparator can suffer from three non-idealities: offset voltage, random noise and kickback noise. Specifically in an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) the kickback noise of a comparator can noticeably affect the settling time and accuracy of the decision. This work offers an analytical treatment of kickback noise generation, and proposes a synchronized kickback noise cancellation technique, which is achieved via placing clocked NMOS-PMOS capacitors at the proper nodes to cancel out effectively those unwanted charges (electrons or holes) under different operating regions of the MOS devices. The technique is clock-rate insensitive and particularly suitable for the SAR-type ADC as it will not alter the charge stored in the capacitor array. Optimized in 65-nm CMOS the kickback noise is <±0.3 mV in 30× Monte–Carlo simulations at both 50- and 500-MHz clock rates. For 10-bit resolution in a full scale of 1 V_pp, the kickback noise of the proposed comparator comparing with the conventional one is improved by 48×, from 6.27 to 0.13 LSB.     

Widely tunable polarization-independent all-optical wavelengthconverter using a semiconductor optical amplifier

We report a polarization-independent widely tunable four-wave mixing wavelength converter using polarization diversity and broad-band orthogonal pumps in a single semiconductor optical amplifier. The conversion efficiency is nearly constant (less than 3-dB variation) over a 36-nm range with less than 0.34 dB polarization sensitivity. The power penalty at 10^-9 bit error rate for a 10-Gb/s signal is less than 0.9 dB
