Elastomeric Chlorosulfonated polyethylene (Hypalon®) and thermoplastic Polypropylene (PP) based thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs) were prepared in presence of different doses of compatibilizer, maleic anhydride grafted PP (PP‐g‐MA) by employing dynamic vulcanization technique. The effect of incorporation in different proportions of compatibilizer on mechanical, spectral, morphological, thermal, and rheological properties of such TPVs was studied and the same were compared to that of virgin PP and amongst themselves. The mechanical analysis of the prepared TPVs exhibited significant improvements in stress at 25% modulus, ultimate tensile strength (UTS), and hardness values. FTIR studies revealed that a chemical interaction had taken place between Hypalon® and functionalized compatibilizer during the process of dynamic vulcanization which led to an enhancement of interfacial adhesion between them. The two‐phase morphologies were clearly observed by scanning electron microscopic studies. The Tg values of Hypalon® was modified in the TPVs as exhibited by differential scanning calorimetric studies. TGA studies indicated the increase in thermal stability of all TPVs with respect to the elastomeric Hypalon®. Rheological properties showed that the compatibilizer reduces the melt viscosity of TPVs and thus facilitates the processibility of such TPVs. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. The sidewall functionalization of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) was established by poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) using controlled radical polymerization (CRP) method. A bromide functionalized SWCNT (SWCNT-Br) has been used as an initiator for the synthesis of SWCNT-graft-PMMA (SWCNT-g-PMMA). The efficiency of the sacrificial initiator (S) was monitored during the polymerization process. The obtained polymers possess a uniform distribution of molecular weight with a lower polydispersity index of 1.36. The SWCNTs-based initiator acts as an efficient medium for the controlled growth of polymer on the SWCNTs surfaces. The presence of bimodal gel permeation chromatographic (GPC) curve for the SWCNT-g-PMMA(S) obtained through sacrificial initiator (S) confirms uncontrolled behavior. However, the clear sharp peak for SWCNT-g-PMMA obtained without sacrificial initiator shows its well-controlled process of polymerization, which acts as a mimic to bone cement. The efficiency of the functionalization of SWCNT and the controlled formation of SWCNT-g-PMMA composites were characterized by TGA, Raman, TEM, NMR, XPS and dispersion measurements.  相似文献

This work demonstrates sequential heating protocol to be an effective method in the reduction of percolation threshold of multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) in (70/30 w/w) poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/high‐density poly(ethylene) (HDPE)/MWCNT nanocomposites. Here, the percolation threshold (Pc) value was reduced to 0.08 wt % of MWCNT, which is the lowest among the ever reported values of Pc for the PMMA system. Moreover, a co‐continuous morphology of the minor HDPE phase was evident throughout the major PMMA phase in a highly asymmetric composition (70/30 w/w) of the blend constituents. The AC conductivity as well as the dielectric permittivity values were increased with increase in loading of MWCNT in the nanocomposites. In this article, we introduce an eco‐friendly approach to achieve electrical conductivity at sufficiently lower loading of MWCNT in the PS/LDPE/MWCNT nanocomposites through judicious control of temperature during melt blending. The percolation threshold was achieved at 0.21 wt% of MWCNT following this method, which is lower, compared to the result obtained from direct mixing as well as the previously reported data. The morphological analysis revealed a co‐continuous structure of the (70/30, PS/LDPE)/MWCNT nanocomposites in such a high asymmetric composition of blend constituents, which facilitates in the lowering of percolation threshold through selective dispersion of MWCNT in the minor LDPE phase. The electron conduction in the nanocomposites has well been explained in terms of tunneling mechanism, supporting thin coating of polymer over individual CNTs. The three GxxxG repeating motifs from the C-terminal region of β-amyloid (Aβ) peptide play a significant role in regulating the aggregation kinetics of the peptide. Mutation of these glycine residues to leucine greatly accelerates the fibrillation process but generates a varied toxicity profile. Using an array of biophysical techniques, we demonstrated the uniqueness of the composite glycine residues in these structural repeats. We used solvent relaxation NMR spectroscopy to investigate the role played by the surrounding water molecules in determining the corresponding aggregation pathway. Notably, the conformational changes induced by Gly33 and Gly37 mutations result in significantly decreased toxicity in a neuronal cell line. Our results indicate that G33xxxG37 is the primary motif responsible for Aβ neurotoxicity, hence providing a direct structure–function correlation. Targeting this motif, therefore, can be a promising strategy to prevent neuronal cell death associated with Alzheimer's and other related diseases, such as type II diabetes and Parkinson's.  相似文献

Surfactants are frequently used in chemical enhanced oil recovery (EOR) as it reduces the interfacial tension (IFT) to an ultra‐low value and also alter the wettability of oil‐wet rock, which are important mechanisms for EOR. However, most of the commercial surfactants used in chemical EOR are very expensive. In view of that an attempt has been made to synthesis an anionic surfactant from non‐edible Jatropha oil for its application in EOR. Synthesized surfactant was characterized by FTIR, NMR, dynamic light scattering, thermogravimeter analyser, FESEM, and EDX analysis. Thermal degradability study of the surfactant shows no significant loss till the conventional reservoir temperature. The ability of the surfactant for its use in chemical EOR has been tested by measuring its physicochemical properties, viz., reduction of surface tension, IFT and wettability alteration. The surfactant solution shows a surface tension value of 31.6 mN/m at its critical micelle concentration (CMC). An ultra‐low IFT of 0.0917 mN/m is obtained at CMC of surfactant solution, which is further reduced to 0.00108 mN/m at optimum salinity. The synthesized surfactant alters the oil‐wet quartz surface to water‐wet which favors enhanced recovery of oil. Flooding experiments were conducted with surfactant slugs with different concentrations. Shock recovered samples of a coarse grain (10 μm), high density (>99.9% theoretical) alumina from asymmetric impact tests conducted at 6.5 GPa (e.g. 3.2 times its Hugoniot Elastic Limit) in a single stage gas gun and characterized by X-ray diffractometry, scanning and field emission scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy showed prolific presence of reduced crystallite size, higher average microstrain, grain localized micro/nano-scale deformations, micro-cleavages, grain-boundary microcracks, micro-wing crack formation, extensive shear induced deformations and fractures localized at grains, grain boundaries and triple grain junctions, grain localized entanglement of dislocations and their pile up impeded at grain boundaries. A new qualitative model based on micro-shear and micro-twist induced deformation and fracture in single and/or multiple planes in suitably oriented grain and/or grain assembly was developed to explain the experimentally observed damage evolution process.  相似文献

Abstract

Studies have been done to design an optimum composition of alkali/surfactant/polymer (ASP) slug and its application in flooding to increase the additional recovery of oil. A very low concentration of alkali and surfactant is used to achieve ultra-low interfacial tension between the trapped oil and the injection water, and polymer is used to increase the viscosity of the injection water for mobility control. Based on the experimental results of physico-chemical properties of polymer, surfactant, and alkali and their mutual interaction in solution, an ASP slug of composition SDS: 0.1 wt%, SDBS: 0.075 wt%, polyacrylamide: 2,000 ppm, and NaOH: 0.7 wt% has been recommended for flooding. Two sets of core-flooding experiments have been conducted using the designed ASP slug in a tri-axial core holder to measure the additional recovery of oil. The average additional oil recovery over conventional water flooding was found to be more than 20% of the original oil in place (OOIP).  相似文献
