Xenobiotic exposure during pregnancy and lactation has been linked to perinatal changes in male reproductive outcomes and other endocrine parameters. This pilot study wished to assess whether brief maternal exposure of rats to xenobiotics dibutyl phthalate (DBP) or diethylstilbestrol (DES) might also cause long-term changes in hypothalamic gene expression or in reproductive behavior of the resulting offspring. Time-mated female Sprague Dawley rats were given either DBP (500 mg/kg body weight, every second day from GD14.5 to PND6), DES (125 µg/kg body weight at GD14.5 and GD16.5 only), or vehicle (n = 8–12 per group) and mild endocrine disruption was confirmed by monitoring postnatal anogenital distance. Hypothalamic RNA from male and female offspring at PND10, PND24 and PND90 was analyzed by qRT-PCR for expression of aromatase, oxytocin, vasopressin, ER-alpha, ER-beta, kisspeptin, and GnRH genes. Reproductive behavior was monitored in male and female offspring from PND60 to PND90. Particularly, DES treatment led to significant changes in hypothalamic gene expression, which for the oxytocin gene was still evident at PND90, as well as in sexual behavior. In conclusion, maternal xenobiotic exposure may not only alter endocrine systems in offspring but, by impacting on brain development at a critical time, can have long-term effects on male or female sexual behavior. 相似文献

The vapour phase oxidation of methanol to formaldehyde over molybdenum oxide, tungsten oxide and their mixtures has been investigated in an integral flow reactor at atmospheric pressure. The effect of several process variables on the conversion and yield were determined. A high conversion of 95.6% methanol with nearly 95% selectivity was obtained at 430°C. The tensile mechanical properties of ceramic matrix composites (CMC) in directions off the primary axes of the reinforcing fibers are important for the architectural design of CMC components that are subjected to multiaxial stress states. In this study, two-dimensional (2D)-woven melt-infiltrated (MI) SiC/SiC composite panels with balanced fiber content in the 0° and 90° directions were tensile loaded in-plane in the 0° direction and at 45° to this direction. In addition, a 2D triaxially braided MI SiC/SiC composite panel with a higher fiber content in the ±67° bias directions compared with the axial direction was tensile loaded perpendicular to the axial direction tows (i.e., 23° from the bias fibers). Stress–strain behavior, acoustic emission, and optical microscopy were used to quantify stress-dependent matrix cracking and ultimate strength in the panels. It was observed that both off-axis-loaded panels displayed higher composite onset stresses for through-thickness matrix cracking than the 2D-woven 0/90 panels loaded in the primary 0° direction. These improvements for off-axis cracking strength can in part be attributed to higher effective fiber fractions in the loading direction, which in turn reduces internal stresses on weak regions in the architecture, e.g., minicomposite tows oriented normal to the loading direction and/or critical flaws in the matrix for a given composite stress. Both off-axis-oriented panels also showed relatively good ultimate tensile strength when compared with other off-axis-oriented composites in the literature, both on an absolute strength basis as well as when normalized by the average fiber strength within the composites. A precise measure of the liquid motion and distribution of bubble sizes is essential for designing gas-liquid reactors for complex reactions in which product distribution may be a function of bubble size. A theoretical approach is presented which shows how the interaction of bubble size distribution and bubble rise velocity functions leads to predictions of the overall steady state hold-up in a bubble column within which the liquid flow is understood. Since this approach is based on a physical understanding of how bubble flow at a given superficial velocity must relate to the static hold-up, the theory can be immediately extended to describe the disengagement of gas bubbles if the gas feed is cut off. Thus the dynamic gas hold-up during gas disengagement can be used to provide new insights into the fundamentals of bubble column behaviour. In this way it becomes possible in principle to inter-relate macroscopic properties such as surface area, gas phase residence time distribution and intensity of mixing in the liquid phase.A new experimental technique is described which measures the dynamic gas hold-up during gas disengagement Experimental results at a nominal 20 mm/s gas superficial velocity are compared with various approaches based upon the theory. The effects of the accompanying induced liquid movements are represented by a simplified core-annulus circulation model. Bubble size distributions and liquid circulation can then be related to both the static and dynamic hold-up behaviour. It is shown that ambiguity due to uncertainty about the relative differences in bubble size distribution in upflow and downflow regions can be resolved from a knowledge of the surface area. 相似文献

Catalytic cracking is an old process, but is still subject to new pressures for change and improvement. In the 1990s, these pressures arise from the need to crack components drawn from deeper down the barrel as well as to reformulate fuel products which can meet more stringent environmental requirements. Recent efforts at correlating catalyst formulation and cracking performance still rely on largely empirical understanding of the role of catalyst composition and zeolite/matrix pore architecture. However, new tests measuring cracking performance at constant surface area as the zeolite/ matrix ratio varies have indicated that the pore architecture should be designed to facilitate a staged cracking. The whole range of pore sizes from micro-pores (< 20 Å) to giant macro-pores (1000 Å) are now known to be influential in determining cracking yield and activity and these pores should be assembled into an optimal architecture. Unfortunately, the configuration of pores in a typical spray dried FCC catalyst is usually far from such an optimal design. The use of stochastic pore networks to characterise macro-pore structures is described in conjunction with some experimental results employing a visualised porosimetry based on low melting point alloy impregnation. Improved designs of catalyst will impose new requirements on the fluidised bed hardware. Some recent improvements in the chemical engineering of riser reactor/regenerator units are described which centre on atomised injection, segregated feeding, closed cyclones, staged stripping and catalyst cooling. 相似文献

In this paper, a variation of the method of designing surfaces for flank milling proposed by Li et al. 2006 (Surface design for flank milling. Submitted to CAD, July) is presented. Li’s method is based on the premise that the surface flank milled by a cylindrical tool can be represented by a NURBS surface and can be used by designers to build efficient impellers, blades and other engineering parts. In the proposed method, a four control point curve is used to approximate the grazing curves and for subsequent generation of a polynomial surface. This eliminates the need of weights for the interior control points and still results in a good surface. The accuracy of the surface can be controlled by adding control points. Examples are given to demonstrate the proposed surface design method. 相似文献

With the use of in vivo fluorescence microscopy we have analyzed microvascular reperfusion injury of small bowel isograft transplants in rats. Following 1 hr cold storage in University of Wisconsin solution, the small bowel was transplanted heterotopically, and the intestinal microcirculation was quantitatively analyzed 20-60 min after onset of reperfusion. The intestinal grafts' capillary perfusion of both the mucosa and the circular and longitudinal muscles was not found altered when compared with the intestinal capillary perfusion of sham-operated controls. In contrast, leukocyte-endothelial cell interaction, including leukocyte rolling (40 +/- 5%) and sticking (280 +/- 100 mm-2) in submucosal postcapillary venules, was significantly increased when compared with nontransplanted controls (12 +/- 8% and 20 +/- 10 mm-2, P < 0.01 and P < 0.05, respectively). Leukocyte-endothelial cell interaction was associated with a marked alteration of lymphatic capillary drainage, as indicated by the low functional density of lymphatic microvessels of 10.2 +/- 6.1 cm-1 (P < 0.01 vs. sham-operated controls (39.2 +/- 6.1 cm-1)). From these results we propose that leukocyte-endothelial cell interaction, not capillary "no-reflow," is the primary step in the manifestation of microvascular reperfusion injury following a short period of cold ischemia in small bowel grafts. 相似文献

Phosphofructokinase purified from mantle tissue of the sea mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis, was phosphorylated "in vitro" by the catalytic subunit of cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase. The incorporation of phosphate gave rise to an activation of the enzyme by increasing its affinity for fructose-6-phosphate, by decreasing its sensitivity to the inhibition by ATP and by enhancing the effect of allosteric activators (5'-AMP and fructose-2,6-bisphosphate). Critical issues in human sexuality have changed markedly during the past decade and so have the contributions of psychology to the evaluation and treatment of sexual behavior problems. Some of the greatest challenges facing psychologists today include the increasing emphasis on medical interventions for the male sexual disorders and the relative decline of traditional behavioral sex therapies, the recalcitrance of sexual desire disorders, the prevention of "unsafe" sexual behavior, and the limited understanding of female sexuality. This overview introduces a series of 5 articles that examine these selected critical issues in human sexuality. Although arthroscopic Bankart repair has become an accepted surgical stabilization technique for anterior shoulder instability, the failure rate remains unacceptably high. Little information is available concerning healing of the Bankart repair. The purpose of this article is to clarify this issue by analyzing a cohort of 15 patients who underwent a "second-look" arthroscopy to evaluate and treat pain or recurrent instability following arthroscopic Bankart repair with the Suretac device (Acufex Microsurgical, Mansfield, MA). "Second-look" arthroscopy was performed at an average of 9 months following the index surgical procedure. The reasons for this second surgery were recurrent instability in 7, pain in 6, and pain and stiffness in 2. In the 7 patients with recurrent instability, the Bankart repair was found to be completely healed in 3 (43%), partially healed in 1 (14%), and had recurred in 3 (43%); however, 6 of 7 were observed to have lax capsular tissue. In 4 of these cases, retrospective review of the index surgical procedure showed that a technical error had been made during the repair. Two cases had biopsy of the repair site on "second-look" at 6 to 8 months, and this showed residual polyglyconate polymer debris surrounded by a histiocytic infiltrate. In the remaining 8 cases with stable shoulders, the Bankart repair had completely healed in 5 cases (62.5%) and partially healed in 3 cases (37.5%). The higher failure rate with this approach compared with open approaches appears to result from improper patient selection and errors in surgical technique. There is some question concerning healing strength of the Bankart repair, although complete healing of the Bankart does not seem to be a prerequesite for shoulder stability. Success of the procedure might be expected to improve by selecting only patients with unidirectional, posttraumatic, anterior instability who are found to have a discrete Bankart lesion and well-developed ligamentous tissue. 相似文献
