Availability Analysis of a Fault-Tolerant Computer System

Queueing network theory is applied in order to determine the availability of a fault-tolerant multiprocessor computer system. Mean repair times and utilizations of system units are computed. Subsystem availabilities are obtained by the decomposition technique of queueing network theory.     

Affectivity of task, rehearsal time, and physiological response.

20 undergraduates discussed a neutral topic and an affect-arousing topic. 10 Ss were allotted a 5-min rehearsal, whereas the remainder were given only 30 sec of rehearsal time prior to their verbal presentations. The endosomatic galvanic skin potential and heart rate were recorded for all Ss during the periods of rehearsal, speech, and immediately following the speech period. Results indicate (a) significant differences between responses to an affective topic and a neutral topic, (b) a significantly different number of words elicited by an affective topic vs a neutral topic, and (c) definite physiological patterns associated with the length of the Ss' speech. Behavioral incapacitation of rats during full-scale combustion of natural-fiber and synthetic polymeric furnishings

Thirty Long-Evans rats served in each of six experiments to determine the time-course of behavioral incapacitation during exposure to full-scale combustion of household furnishings. Three experiments involved furniture constructed of natural-fiber materials, and three experiments involved furniture dominated by synthetic polymers. Groups of rats, previously trained to stable levels of performance on three tasks (rotorod, operant shock-avoidance, and a jump/escape test), were exposed to combustion products at three locations in a full-scale burn facility. Animals were removed from the exposure environment when they reached each of three operationally defined stages of behavioral incapacitation. Measures of time-to-incapacitation revealed that a given degree of behavioral dysfunction occurred 3 to 5 times sooner during exposure to the combustion of polymeric as compared to natural-fiber furnishings. Temperature, hydrocarbons, carbon dioxide, and oxides of nitrogen were the most frequent statistically significant correlates of time to behavioral incapacitation in polymeric fires; carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and total hydrocarbon concentration were the most frequent statistically significant correlates of behavioral dysfunction in natural-fiber fires. Animals that survived the first 24-hour interval after exposure showed no evidence of lasting behavioral incapacitation.     

The forensic psychology section in a state hospital.

A psychology section functioning in a forensic services center is described. The legal questions that must be dealt with in such a setting are explained, and psychology's role in answering these questions is explored. The goals of treatment in a forensic unit, which focus on educating a defendant to competency for trial, are discussed, and an example of a treatment program is presented. The functions of a psychologist in a forensic setting are compared and contrasted with those of a psychologist in the general mental health field. The simultaneous determination of both the quantity and the fatty acid composition of the triglycerides in three to ten microliters of plasma

An integrated system using chromatography on silica gel-impregnated glass paper, an internal standard and gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) makes possible the isolation of triglycerides, the determination of triglyceride, fatty acid composition, and the quantitative determination of triglyceride. Recoveries are good and values for total triglyceride obtained by this system compare favorably with values obtained by application of the hydroxamate colorimetric method to the triglyceride eluate from silicic acid columns. The fatty acid composition of the cholesteryl ester (CE) fraction is obtainable at the same time by GLC of methyl esters prepared from the CE fractions which also appears as a distinct spot on these chromatograms. Also, a densitometric method is described for triglyceride determination by photometry of the charred spots obtained after chromatography on the gel-paper. The simulation of precipitation kinetics

The kinetics of precipitation is formulated as a set of rate equations typical of chemical mechanisms in which initiation of monomer and propagation due to homogeneous and heterogeneous nucleation are included. This model discrete in aggregate size is then transformed into a continuous one so that an efficient numerical solution may be obtained via a weighted residual technique. The resulting model consists of a set of ordinary differential equations with coefficients defined in terms of integrals for the moments of the particle size distribution and is best solved by an implicit method.
