High‐pressure processing effects on the mechanical,barrier and mass transfer properties of food packaging flexible structures: a critical review

Food products can be high‐pressure processed (HPP) either in bulk or prepackaged in flexible or semi‐rigid packaging materials. In the latter case the packaging material is subjected, together with the food, to high‐pressure treatment. A number of studies have been performed to quantify the effects of high‐pressure processing on the physical and barrier properties of the packaging material, since the integrity of the package during and after processing is of paramount importance to the safety and quality of the food product. Synthesis and evaluation of hexafluorodimethylcarbinol functionalized polymers as microsensor coatings

Polystyrenes, polyacrylates, and poly(3,4-isoprenes) incorporating the hexafluorodimethylcarbinol functionality have been synthesized, characterized, and tested as microsensor coatings on a surface acoustic wave (SAW) device for dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) vapor absorption sensitivity. The syntheses involved monomer functionalization and polymerization or hexafluoroacetone reaction with preformed polymer. All fluoroalcohol functionalized polymer coatings displayed sub parts per million level sensitivity with the slope of the absorption isotherm steepest at low DMMP concentrations. The order of sensitivity for the isomeric polystyrene fluoroalcohols (meta > para ? ortho) paralleled that of the relative free hydroxyl to hydrogen-bonded hydroxyl content. Strong hydrogen bonding between the fluoroalcohol polymers and DMMP vapor was observed by IR spectroscopy. Acylation of the fluoroalcohol group markedly reduced the DMMP sensitivity.     

On finding optimal and near-optimal lineal spanning trees

The search for good lineal, or depth-first, spanning trees is an important aspect in the implementation of a wide assortment of graph algorithms. We consider the complexity of findingoptimal lineal spanning trees under various notions of optimality. In particular, we show that several natural problems, such as constructing a shortest or a tallest lineal tree, are NP-hard. Multisource-sputtered ErBa2Cu3O7−x films on single-crystal and buffered crystalline substrates

High-quality superconducting films of erbium-barium-copper-oxide have been produced in a multisource sputtering system on a variety of substrates, including buffered sapphire and silicon wafers as well as various single-crystal materials. Fine-grained polycrystalline films with narrow (<4 K) resistive transitions have been grown on a number of different substrates. The use of erbium in the 12–3 compound leads to improved film morphology and to more forgiving conditions for establishing of the superconducting phase. Sputtered neutral mass spectroscopy (SNMS) yields useful information about the compositional profile of the films.     

Assessment of the Rescorla-Wagner model.

The Rescorla-Wagner model has been the most influential theory of associative learning to emerge from the study of animal behavior over the last 25 years. Recently, equivalence to this model has become a benchmark in assessing connectionist models, with such equivalence often achieved by incorporating the Widrow-Hoff delta rule. This article presents the Rescorla-Wagner model's basic assumptions, reviews some of the model's predictive successes and failures, relates the failures to the model's assumptions, and discusses the model's heuristic value. It is concluded that the model has had a positive influence on the study of simple associative learning by stimulating research and contributing to new model development. However, this benefit should neither lead to the model being regarded as inherently "correct" nor imply that its predictions can be profitably used to assess other models. Another step forward in searching for cubature formulae with a minimal number of knots for the square

The knots and weights of a cubature formula are determined by a system of nonlinear equations. The number of equations and unknowns can be reduced by imposing some structure on the formula. We are concerned with the construction of cubature formulae which are invariant under rotations. Using invariant theory, we obtain a smaller system of algebraically independent equations. This is used to construct cubature formulae for the square. One of the results is a 24-point formula of degree 11.     

New titanium applications on the Boeing 777 airplane

When rolled out for its first customer in 1995, the 777 will be the first new Boeing commercial airplane in more than ten years. Since the introduction of the last two Boeing planes, the 767 and 757, the science and technology of titanium alloys has come a long way. Some of the advances have led to new applications of titanium\3-with its accompanying performance benefits\3-on the 777.
