During the breeding season, female red-sided garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis) produce and express a sexual attractiveness pheromone that elicits male courtship behavior. Composed of a homologous series of saturated and monounsaturated methyl ketones, this pheromone is expressed in female skin lipids. Recent studies have shown that the sexual attractivity of unmated female garter snakes declines as the breeding season progresses. Here, we investigated whether temporal changes in the quantity and/or quality of the female sexual attractiveness pheromone are responsible for the observed loss of attractivity. Female red-sided garter snakes were collected immediately following spring emergence and held under natural conditions for the duration of the breeding season. Behavioral experiments confirmed that unmated females become significantly less attractive to males within two weeks of emergence from hibernation. Additionally, these females had lower estradiol concentrations at two weeks post-emergence. Subsequent chemical analyses revealed qualitative variation between the pheromone profiles of newly emerged females and those of females at two weeks post-emergence. Together, these results support the hypothesis that changes in the female sexual attractiveness pheromone are responsible for declining post-emergence female attractivity in garter snakes.  相似文献

Phase equilibria of the zinc oxide–cobalt oxide system were studied by a combination of X‐ray diffraction and in situ electrical conductivity and thermopower measurements of bulk ceramic specimens up to 1000°C in air. Rietveld refinement of X‐ray diffraction patterns demonstrated increasing solubility of Co in ZnO with increasing temperature, which is supported by the slight increase in wurtzite (Zn1?xCoxO) cell volume and lattice parameter a versus temperature determined for the phase boundary compositions. Similarly, the solubility of Zn in CoO increased with increasing temperature. In contrast, the spinel phase (ZnzCo3?zO4) exhibited retrograde solubility for Zn. Electrical measurements showed that the eutectoid temperature for transformation of rocksalt Co1?yZnyO into wurtzite and spinel is 894 ± 3°C, and the upper temperature limit of the stability of the spinel phase is 894°C–898°C for the compositions Co/(Zn+Co) = 0.82–1. The resulting composition‐temperature phase diagram is presented and compared to the earlier (1955) diagram by Robin.  相似文献

Exposure to sunlight is the major cause of skin cancer. Ultraviolet radiation (UV) from the sun causes damage to DNA by direct absorption and can cause skin cell death. UV also causes production of reactive oxygen species that may interact with DNA to indirectly cause oxidative DNA damage. UV increases accumulation of p53 in skin cells, which upregulates repair genes but promotes death of irreparably damaged cells. A benefit of sunlight is vitamin D, which is formed following exposure of 7-dehydrocholesterol in skin cells to UV. The relatively inert vitamin D is metabolized to various biologically active compounds, including 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3. Therapeutic use of vitamin D compounds has proven beneficial in several cancer types, but more recently these compounds have been shown to prevent UV-induced cell death and DNA damage in human skin cells. Here, we discuss the effects of vitamin D compounds in skin cells that have been exposed to UV. Specifically, we examine the various signaling pathways involved in the vitamin D-induced protection of skin cells from UV.  相似文献

The electrical conductivity of portland cement mortars was determined experimentally as a function of the volume fraction of sand and the degree of hydration. The results were analyzed using theoretical models that represent the mortars as three-phase, interactive composites. The three phases are the matrix paste, the aggregate, and the thin interfacial transition zone between the two. The microstructure and properties of the conductive phases (the transition zone and the matrix paste) were determined by a micrometer-scale microstructural model, and were used in conjunction with random-walk algorithms and differential-effective medium theory to determine the overall mortar conductivities. The presence of the transition zone was not found to significantly affect the global electrical conductivity of the mortar. However, there were significant differences in conductivity between the transition zone and matrix pastes when examined on a local level. These differences were found to vary with hydration and were most significant when the degree of hydration was between 0.5 and 0.8.  相似文献

Chylomicrons transport absorbed fat from the intestine to the circulation. During dietary fat absorption, the chylomicrons become larger in diameter, and in some studies an increase in chylomicron number has been observed as well. In the present study, we compared particle size and number in rat lymph following administration of four different oils. We administered fish oil, medium-chain TAG (MCT), and two structured oils differing in intramolecular structure, with either medium-chain FA in the outer positions of the TAG and long-chain n−3 PUFA in the sn-2 position (MLM oil) or with the reverse structure (LML oil), to lymph-cannulated rats and collected lymph in fractions for the following 8 h. Chylomicron size was measured by a particle size analyzer immediately after collection, and from these data the number of chylomicrons present was estimated. The number of particles in lymph increased during the absorption of oils containing long-chain PUFA (MLM, LML, and fish oil), whereas it was not affected by administration of MCT. The FA from MCT were probably absorbed via the portal vein; therefore, only a small number of particles were measured in lymph. When comparing the two structured oils, we observed a tendency toward a higher number of particles after LML administration, although the difference was not statistically significant. The highest number of particles after administration of all oils was observed in the size intervals 53–80 and 80–121 nm and probably represented small chylomicrons. Thus, the FA composition influenced the number of particles in lymph during absorption, whereas TAG structure had only a minor influence.  相似文献

Sulfamethazine is often used to treat disease in the swine industry. Sulfamethazine is available as water or feed medication and historically (over the past 40 years) has been associated with residue violations in both the United States and Europe. Despite sulfamethazine's approval for use as a water medication, little research on the pharmacokinetics of the water formulation is available. Therefore, a pilot study was performed to determine the plasma levels of an approved sulfamethazine water medication. Plasma levels in pigs treated with an oral bolus (250 mg/kg), which is equivalent to the total drug consumed within a 24-h period, achieved therapeutic concentrations (50 microg/ml). Noncompartmental-based pharmacokinetic model parameters for clearance, half-life, and volume of distribution were consistent with previously published values in swine. However, the above treatment resulted in exposure of pen mates to sulfamethazine at levels currently above tolerance (0.1 ppm). Using a physiologically based pharmacokinetic model, the treatment dose simulation was compared with observed plasma levels of treated pigs. Flexibility of the physiologically based pharmacokinetic model also allowed simulation of control-pig plasma levels to estimate contamination exposure. A simulated exposure to 0.15 mg/kg twice within approximately 8 h resulted in detectable levels of sulfamethazine in the control pigs. After initial exposure, a much lower dose of 0.059 mg/kg maintained the contamination levels above tolerance for at least 3 days. These results are of concern for producers and veterinarians, because in commercial farms, the entire barn is often treated,and environmental contamination could result in residues of an unknown duration.  相似文献

A compact wide-frequency-range quadrature sinusoid signal generator tailored to on-chip impedance spectroscopy instrumentation applications is described. Using a new hybrid structure, it provides seven orders of frequency-tuning range (1 mHz to 10 kHz) appropriate for impedance characterization of many sensor materials. The signal generator exhibits very accurate frequency tuning through digital control, and the new structure inherently guarantees good phase and amplitude matching between sine and cosine outputs across the supported frequency range. The circuit has been fabricated in a 0.5-mum CMOS process and occupies 1 mm2. It consumes only 60 muA with a 3-V supply. Measurements show that the phase mismatch is less than 0.8deg and that the amplitude mismatch is less than 3%. The total harmonic distortion is below 0.6% over the seven-order frequency range.  相似文献

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is considered a leading technology for reducing CO2 emissions from fossil-fuelled electricity generation plants and could permit the continued use of coal and gas whilst meeting greenhouse gas targets. However considerable energy is required for the capture, compression, transport and storage steps involved. In this paper, energy penalty information in the literature is reviewed, and thermodynamically ideal and “real world” energy penalty values are calculated. For a sub-critical pulverized coal (PC) plant, the energy penalty values for 100% capture are 48.6% and 43.5% for liquefied CO2, and for CO2 compressed to 11 MPa, respectively. When assumptions for supercritical plants were incorporated, results were in broad agreement with published values arising from process modelling. However, we show that energy use in existing capture operations is considerably greater than indicated by most projections. Full CCS demonstration plants are now required to verify modelled energy penalty values. However, it appears unlikely that CCS will deliver significant CO2 reductions in a timely fashion. In addition, many uncertainties remain over the permanence of CO2 storage, either in geological formations, or beneath the ocean. We conclude that further investment in CCS should be seriously questioned by policy makers.  相似文献

It is believed that mammalian chemosensory irritants are not aversive to birds and vice versa. Nevertheless, few avian repellents have been tested against mammals. For that reason, we evaluated the efficacy of 1.0% w/v methyl anthranilate, orthoaminoacetophenone, 2-amino-4,5-methoxyacetophenone, 2-methoxyacetophenone, and veratryl amine as mouse repellents in 3-hr no-choice drinking tests. Relative to ingestion of plain water, all test substances significantly reduced (P < 0.05) intake. Orthoaminoaceto-phenone was the most effective repellent, with intake reduced to levels statistically indistinguishable from zero.  相似文献
