In this work, the elemental composition of fine and ultrafine particles emitted by ten different laser printing devices (LPD) is examined. The particle number concentration time series was measured as well as the particle size distributions. In parallel, emitted particles were size-selectively sampled with a cascade impactor and subsequently analyzed by the means of XRF. In order to identify potential sources for the aerosol's elemental composition, materials involved in the printing process such as toner, paper, and structural components of the printer were also analyzed. While the majority of particle emissions from laser printers are known to consist of recondensated semi volatile organic compounds, elemental analysis identifies Si, S, Cl, Ca, Ti, Cr, and Fe as well as traces of Ni and Zn in different size fractions of the aerosols. These elements can mainly be assigned to contributions from toner and paper. The detection of elements that are likely to be present in inorganic compounds is in good agreement with the measurement of nonvolatile particles. Quantitative measurements of solid particles at 400 °C resulted in residues of 1.6 × 10(9) and 1.5 × 10(10) particles per print job, representing fractions of 0.2% and 1.9% of the total number of emitted particles at room temperature. In combination with the XRF results it is concluded that solid inorganic particles contribute to LPD emissions in measurable quantities. Furthermore, for the first time Br was detected in significant concentrations in the aerosol emitted from two LPD. The analysis of several possible sources identified the plastic housings of the fuser units as main sources due to substantial Br concentrations related to brominated flame retardants.  相似文献

Lactobacillus brevis is the most significant beer spoilage bacteria worldwide. It is found as a contaminant at all stages of brewing, including during primary and secondary fermentation, storage, filtration and the packaging process. In production with flash pasteurisation and subsequent hygienic filling, avoiding and tracing secondary contaminations is the key to a microbiologically stable product. However, L. brevis strains vary in their spoilage potential and can grow in many different beer types. This study presents a physiological test scheme for growth potential and biofilm formation in various media. It was determined that a large number of L. brevis strains can form biofilms as a first coloniser. The identification of the species alone is therefore not enough to be sure of the spoilage risk, which shows the need for a more in depth differentiation. DNA fingerprint techniques are crucial to differentiate isolates of this species at strain level. The rep‐PCR fingerprint system (GTG)5 was used to differentiate a selected collection of 20 isolates, which were characterised in growth and biofilm formation in various media. The data showed a high variation within the selected isolates. As second step, generated fingerprint clusters of L. brevis were traced back to contamination sources in a German brewery, revealing a high number of isolates with potentially varying growth, spoilage and biofilm potential. L. brevis being the demonstrator species, the PCR system used is a powerful and compatible tracing and troubleshooting tool for all kinds of spoilage bacteria in the brewing industry. © 2019 The Institute of Brewing & Distilling  相似文献

A new potassium tetraamidoboranealuminate, K[Al(NH2BH3)4], has been synthesized by a mechanochemical reaction between KAlH4 and NH3BH3. The compound, K[Al(NH2BH3)4], crystallizes in a triclinic unit cell with space group symmetry P?1. The crystal structure consists of [K(NH2BH3)6]5? octahedra which facilitate the bridging between K+ in 1D chains, while also bridging K+ to Al3+ to connect the 1D chains in a 3D network. Thermal analysis reveals that K[Al(NH2BH3)4] decomposes in two exothermic steps at T ~ 94 and 138 °C and releases primarily hydrogen. The total gas release amounts to ~6.0 wt% H2. The decomposition products are investigated ex situ by powder X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and 11B and 27Al NMR and identified as KBH4 and amorphous phases, possibly BN3, N2BH, and/or NBH2 whereas aluminum is found in four-, five-, and six-fold coordination. Unfortunately, the decomposed sample shows no hydrogen absorption at T = 260 °C and p(H2) = 110 bar.  相似文献

Beer spoiling lactic acid bacteria are a major reason for quality complaints in breweries around the world. Spoilage by a variety of these bacteria can result in haze, sediment, slime, off-flavours and acidity. As these bacteria occur frequently in the brewing environment, using certain hop products that inhibit the growth of these spoilers could be a solution to prevent problems. To investigate the impact of seven different hop compounds (α-acids, iso-α-acids, tetrahydro-iso-α-acids, rho-iso-α-acids, xanthohumol, iso-xanthohumol and humulinones) on the growth of six major beer spoilage bacteria (Lactobacillus brevis. L. backi, L. coryniformis, L. lindneri, L. buchneri, Pediococcus damnosous), two concentrations (10 and 25 mg/L) of each hop substance were added to unhopped beer. The potential growth of the spoilage bacteria was investigated over 56 consecutive days. A comparison of the results shows a strong inhibition of growth of all spoilage bacteria at 25 mg/L of tetrahydro-iso-α-acids closely followed by α-acids as the second most inhibitory substance. The results showed a high resistance of L. brevis to all hop compounds as well as an inhibition of L. coryniformis and L. buchneri at low concentrations of most hop components. In comparison with the control sample, L. lindneri showed increased growth in the presence of some hop compounds (rho-iso-α-acids, xanthohumol, iso-xanthohumol, humulinones). © 2020 The Authors. Microsatellite genotyping was evaluated as a potential tool for DNA-based tracing of ground beef product. DNA from mixtures containing different numbers of individuals was analysed with a set of cattle microsatellite markers frequently used for parentage testing. As samples contained DNA from several animals, the microsatellite markers showed multiple peaks. The method could distinguish between mixtures containing equal amounts of meat from three different individuals, meat from three individuals mixed in different proportions, ground beef mixtures purchased in different cities, and different batches of ground beef patties. Limitations occurred when batches contained large numbers of individuals (>10) and different batches used meat from the same individuals. We conclude that DNA microsatellites may be useful for DNA traceability of ground beef mixtures prepared from less than 10 individuals, but where larger numbers of animals contribute to a mixture the method is not consistently accurate.  相似文献

Agro‐industrial wastes are produced in large quantities around the world from the processing and manufacturing of food and beverages. The disposal of these wastes into the environment leads to damage to ecosystems owing to their composition rich in organic matter. In this context it may be noted that the brewing industry, whose production process includes processing steps and fermentation of vegetable raw materials such as barley and/or other grains used as adjuncts and hops, generates various byproducts. The worldwide consumption of these beverages and the current model of breweries, which includes production on a large scale, lead to the generation of large amounts of brewery waste, namely spent grain, hot trub and residual yeast. Owing to its composition, these residues exhibit significant potential for application in bioprocess technologies. In this study the three residues mentioned had their composition determined as a function of moisture, ash, total organic carbon (TOC), total and soluble nitrogen, reducing sugar and soluble free amino nitrogen. Moreover, the residues were characterized for total acidity, pH and chemical oxygen demand (COD) of total and soluble fractions. The three residues evaluated had high moisture content (>80%) and high organic matter content (TOC and COD, ~50% and >1000 mg/g, respectively), which can highlights the significant protein fraction (almost 50% for hot trub and residual yeast), suggesting the possibility of using these wastes for recovery. Heterogeneous surface modification of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) ultrafiltration (UF) membranes is realized with UV irradiation-initiated graft polymerization of acrylic acid (AA) from the gas phase onto photoinitiator (benzophenone, BP)-coated samples. In the absence of monomer, PAN functionalization by ketyl radicals dominates after UV excitation of sorbed BP. With AA, graft and total polymer yield increase with BP loading and UV irradiation time. Average molecular weight and distribution of PAA homopolymer—formed in parallel during graft polymerization—are analyzed with gel permeation chromatography. Morphology of PAN-gr-AA UF membranes is checked with scanning electron micrographs (SEMs) and atomic force microscopy. Chemical changes are characterized with FTIR-ATR spectroscopy and SEM/EDX analyses, indicating a pronounced surface selctivity of the graft polymer modification (localized in the upper 5-μm membrane thickness). The amount of grafted PAA systematically reduces membrane permeability and increases dextrane retention, as verified in UF experiments. Photo graft polymer modificationof UF membranes will be applied to adjust membrane performance by controlling surface hydrophilicity and permeability using other monomers and/or further graft polymer functionalization. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Two highly functionalized resins were synthesized by the phase transfer reaction of indene with propargyl bromide or allyl chloride in the presence of strong base. The resins consisted of a mixture of tri- and tetrafunctional indenes with 60–80% of the product being tetrafunctional. The allylated (AL) and propargylated (PL) indene resins were thermally cured without added catalysts. Both resins exhibited a broad, highly exothermic cure with a peak energy at 320°C for AL resin and 282°C for PL resin. Thermal degradation of cured AL resin was found to begin at approximately 400°C with a carbon yield of 20% of its initial weight at 1000°C. Carbon yields for cured PL resin were excellent, with 68% retention of weight at 1000°C. Unidirectional, carbon fiber composites were fabricated from the substituted indene resins. AL–carbon fiber composites gave modulus values of 126 GPa and strength values of 967 MPa, while PL–carbon fiber composites gave modulus values of 116 GPa and strength values of 935 MPa in three-point bending tests. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
