The effect of tension during drying on the structure and mechanics of poly(p-phenylene benzobisthiazole) (PBT) fibers has been investigated. The application of tension during drying on PBT fibers spun from anisotropic solutions of PBT/Polyphosphoric acid (PPA) results in an enhancement of tensile modulus and yield strength with a reduction in strain to break. The alterations in the tensile properties can be attributed to the straightening of the wet fibrillar network and the reduction in the axial compressive stresses which develop during drying. Modifications in the mechanical behavior of PBT fibers through tension drying can be achieved regardless of the initial spin draw ratio of the fiber. Additionally, tension drying provides a means to maximize the potential stiffness of PBT fibers which have a low spin draw ratio. Lastly, these investigations show that in the processing of PBT fibers, preventing the onset of buckling and aligning the wet fibrillar network with tension during drying is more effective in enhancing the tensile properties than straightening the dried buckled fibers. 相似文献

Previous studies have shown that bizarre and common images produce equivalent levels of recall in unmixed-list designs. Using unmixed lists, we tested the view that bizarre images would be less susceptible than common images to common sources of interference. In all experiments, subjects imaged a list of either bizarre or common sentences and then performed some kind of interfering task before recalling the initial list of sentences. Experiment 1 showed that bizarre images were better accessed than common images after imaging an intervening list of common sentences. Also, components of common images tended to be better recalled than those of bizarre images after imaging an intervening list of bizarre sentences. Experiments 2a and 2b showed that interfering tasks consisting of studying lists of common concrete nouns did not differentially affect memory for bizarre and common images. In Experiment 3, labeling and imaging an interfering list of common pictures produced higher recall of bizarre images. Generally, bizarre images appeared to be less susceptible than common images to interference from certain types of common encodings. Importantly, the superior recall of bizarre images was always due to greater image (sentence) access, whereas higher recall of common images was associated with greater recovery of the image (sentence) constituents. This paper presents an economically attractive system for the hierarchical evolution of High Definition Television (HDTV) compatible with the NTSC installed base. It describes the two main signals of this system: HDMAC-60 and HDNTSC. The first, HDMAC-60, is a feeder signal for use between the program origination and program redistribution points, and used also as a DBS emission format. The second, HDNTSC, is a delivery signal for high definition terrestrial broadcast, CATV distribution and VCR plus laser video disc applications. Using measurements collected at network monitors to infer network conditions is a promising approach for network-centric monitoring. In this context, an important question arises: given the number and locations of network monitors, how much network management resources (e.g., the number of measurements) are needed to obtain an accurate estimate of network states? We define the scalability of measurement-based network monitoring as the growth rate of the number of measurements required for accurate network monitoring/inference with respect to the size of a network. We develop a framework for investigating the scalability in the context of multicast inference with the monitors at the edges of a network. In such a framework, network monitoring/inference can be formulated as probability density estimation of network states. The growth rate is characterized through the sample complexity, which is the number of measurements needed to accurately estimate the density. The missing data framework is introduced to estimate the growth rate, where the missing data reflect unavailable measurements at the unobservable nodes without resident monitors, and the underlying nodal packet losses. We show that when the missing information is mainly due to the number of unobservable nodes, the number of measurements needed grows linearly with the size of the network, and the measurement-based inference approach is, thus, scalable. The kinetics of drying of slab-like materials in- mersed in a fluidized bed of silica gel particles at a relatively low temperature, 30 °C, is studied. As a re- sult of desiccant particle action large surface-to-bed moisture fluxes and, consequently, large drying rates are attained. For all examined materials (cardboard, veneer, asbestos and ceramic plates) the drying times in the desiccant fluidized bed are much shorter than those in the empty apparatus with the same air flow, temperature and humidity. A simple, diffusional model of the drying based upon a mean mass capacity concept is developed. The drying curves calculated from the model are in good agreement with the experimental ones. 相似文献
