The 12 Principles of Green Engineering have been proposed as a framework within which to examine existing products and guide their redesign as well as to evaluate new product designs. The EcoWorx system represents a recyclable carpet tile product that is assessed using the 12 Principles of Green Engineering and cradle-to-cradle design principles to evaluate environmental, qualitative, and economic performance as compared to existing Shaw carpet tile products. The product design strategy embodies life cycle considerations of a cradle-to-cradle product that puts technical nutrient recovered materials into repeated use. EcoWorx offers a unique opportunity for Shaw to utilize the 12 Principles to analyze and optimize new products and processes for the additional capacity needed to meet rising demand for sustainable carpet products. The analysis of the EcoWorx system demonstrated the value of the 12 Principles in verifying and formalizing the experience and intuition of product designers. This suggests that the mistrial and error reliance on experience could be enhanced with this formalized approach and hence lead to more widespread success of design practices that result in sustainable products.  相似文献

The supported liquid membrane (SLM) is a promising separation and preconcentration technique that is well-suited for trace metal speciation in natural waters. The technique is based on the selective complexation of metal ions by a hydrophobic ligand (carrier) dissolved in a water-immiscible organic solvent immobilized in a porous, inert membrane. This membrane separates two aqueous solutions: the test (or donor) solution and the strip (or acceptor) solution. The metal carrier complex is transported by diffusion across the membrane from the source to the strip solution where metal ions are back-extracted. The technique offers great potential to tune the selectivity by incorporating different complexing ligands in the membrane. A SLM was used to analyze the dissolved (<0.45 microm) copper speciation from two sites in the San Francisco Bay estuary; Dumbarton Bridge, [Cu]total approximately 27 nM, and San Bruno Shoals, [Cu]total approximately 23 nM. The sites were also characterized independently by differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry (DPASV) using a Nafion-coated thin mercury film electrode (NCTMFE). The SLM employed 10 mM lasalocid, a naturally occurring carboxylic polyether ionophore, in nitrophenyl octyl ether (NPOE) asthe membrane complexing ligand, supported by a microporous, polypropylene, hydrophobic membrane. This is the first study where SLM technique has been compared with an independent speciation technique in marine waters. Results of copper speciation measurements from Dumbarton Bridge, a site in South San Francisco Bay where copper speciation has been well-characterized in previous studies using various voltammetric techniques, indicated that only about 3% (0.9 nM) of the total dissolved copper was SLM labile. The corresponding DPASV labile copper fraction was <0.4% (<0.1 nM) of total dissolved copper. The concentration of total copper binding ligands measured by the membrane technique was 471 nM as compared to 354 nM measured by DPASV, more than 1 order of magnitude higher than the total dissolved copper concentration. The SLM measurements were consistent with earlier copper speciation measurements that were made in South San Francisco Bay using other voltammetric stripping techniques.  相似文献

The role of O2 and photoionization as well as the involvement of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) cation radicals (P+) in the photodegradation of nine PAHs was examined. Photodegradation quantum yields for all PAHs increased with increasing O2 concentration, illustrating the key role of O2 in the photodegradation mechanism. In the presence of a series of electron donors (to P+), the photodegradation rate constants of most PAHs were largely unaffected at low O2 concentrations (< or = 250 microM), indicating that P+ is not extensively produced. However, at higher O2 concentrations (up to 1.2 mM), the presence of the donors substantially lowered photodegradation rates for most PAHs, indicating that P+ is produced and is arising from O2 reaction with the excited singlet state. Because little P+ was detected at low O2 concentrations and, further, because degradation rates were not enhanced in the presence of N2O, we conclude that photoionization is unimportant. With some exceptions, photodegradation can proceed through reaction of O2 with both excited singlet and triplet states of the PAHs. Our results indicate that photodegradation via the excited singlet state occurs primarily through electron transfer to O2, whereas degradation via the triplet occurs predominately through a direct reaction of O2 with the PAH within the collision complex.  相似文献

A comprehensive organic compound-based receptor model is developed that can simultaneously apportion the source contributions to atmospheric gas-phase organic compounds, semivolatile organic compounds, fine particle organic compounds, and fine particle mass. The model is applied to ambient data collected at four sites in the south coast region of California during a severe summertime photochemical smog episode, where the model determines the direct primary contributions to atmospheric pollutants from 11 distinct air pollution source types. The 11 sources included in the model are gasoline-powered motor vehicle exhaust, diesel engine exhaust, whole gasoline vapors, gasoline headspace vapors, organic solvent vapors, whole diesel fuel, paved road dust, tire wear debris, meat cooking exhaust, natural gas leakage, and vegetative detritus. Gasoline engine exhaust plus whole gasoline vapors are the predominant sources of volatile organic gases, while gasoline and diesel engine exhaust plus diesel fuel vapors dominate the emissions of semivolatile organic compounds from these sources during the episode studied at all four air monitoring sites. The atmospheric fine particle organic compound mass was composed of noticeable contributions from gasoline-powered motor vehicle exhaust, diesel engine exhaust, meat cooking, and paved road dust with smaller but quantifiable contributions from vegetative detritus and tire wear debris. In addition, secondary organic aerosol, which is formed from the low-vapor pressure products of gas-phase chemical reactions, is found to be a major source of fine particle organic compound mass under the severe photochemical smog conditions studied here. The concentrations of secondary organic aerosol calculated in the present study are compared with previous fine particle source apportionment results for less intense photochemical smog conditions. It is shown that estimated secondary organic aerosol concentrations correlate fairly well with the concentrations of 1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid in the atmospheric fine particle mass, indicating that aromatic diacids may be useful in the quantification of certain sources of secondary organic aerosol in the atmosphere.  相似文献

An emerging body of empirical research highlights the impact of acculturative stress in the lives of culturally diverse populations. Therefore, to facilitate future research in this area, we conducted 3 studies to examine the psychometric properties of the Riverside Acculturation Stress Inventory (RASI; Benet-Martínez & Haritatos, 2005) and its 5 subscales in a total sample of 793 self-identified Asian American participants. The reliability and validity of RASI scores and the hypothesized 1-factor higher order model (with 1st-order factors Language Skills, Work Challenges, Intercultural Relations, Discrimination, and Cultural Isolation) of the RASI were examined in Study 1. The RASI higher order structure and score validity and reliability were examined across different generational groups in Study 2. The stability of RASI scores over a 3-week period was examined in Study 3. Overall, findings from these studies support the hypothesized structure of the RASI and indicate that this brief instrument provides reliable and valid acculturative stress scores. In addition, results suggest that RASI items are interpreted in an equivalent manner across different generations of Asian American individuals. Maintenance of relationship quality requires self-regulation of emotion and social behavior, and women often display greater effort in this regard than do men. Furthermore, such efforts can deplete the limited capacity for self-regulation. In recent models of self-regulation, resting level of respiratory sinus arrhythmia, quantified as high-frequency heart rate variability (HF-HRV), is an indicator of self-regulatory capacity, whereas transient increases in HF-HRV reflect self-regulatory effort. To test these hypotheses in marriage, 114 young couples completed measures of marital quality and a positive, neutral, or negative initial marital task, preceded and followed by resting baseline assessments of HF-HRV. Couples then discussed a current marital disagreement. Resting HF-HRV was correlated with marital quality, suggesting that capacity for self-regulation is associated with adaptive functioning in close relationships. For women but not men, the negative initial task produced a decrease in resting HF-HRV. This effect was mediated by the husbands' negative affect response to the task and their ratings of wives as controlling and directive. When the subsequent disagreement discussion followed the negative initial task, women displayed increased HF-HRV during the discussion but a decrease when it followed the neutral or positive task. The valence of the initial task had no effect on men's HF-HRV during disagreement. Negative marital interactions can reduce women's resting HF-HRV, with potentially adverse health consequences. Women's reduced health benefit from marriage might reflect the depleting effects on self-regulatory capacity of their greater efforts to manage relationship quality. Within-subjects procedures were used to assess the influence of stimulus comparison on perceptual learning in humans. In Experiment 1, participants received intermixed (A, A′, A, A′,…) or blocked (B, B,…, B′, B′,…) exposure to pairs of similar female faces. In a subsequent same/different discrimination task, participants were more accurate when the test involved A and A′ than when it involved B and B′ (or novel faces: C and C′). This perceptual learning effect was reduced by placing a visual distractor (*: either another face or a checkerboard) between successive presentations of the faces during the exposure stage (e.g., A – * – A′). The attenuation of the intermixed versus blocked difference was particularly marked when faces were used as the distractor. In Experiment 2, this reduction in perceptual learning was more marked when * was positioned between the pairs of intermixed faces (i.e., A – * – A′) than when it preceded and succeeded those faces (i.e., * – A – A′ – *). These results provide the first direct evidence that the opportunity to compare stimuli plays a causal role in supporting perceptual learning. They also support the specific view that perceptual learning reflects an interaction between a short-term habituation process, that ordinarily biases processing away from the frequently presented common elements and toward their less frequently presented unique elements, and a long-term representational process that reflects this bias. In an effort to decrease the high cost associated with the design, testing, and production of electrocatalysts, a completely electrochemical scheme has been developed to deposit and platinize a nanoporous Au (NPG) based catalyst for formic acid oxidation. The proposed route enables synthesis of an alternative to the most established, nanoparticles based catalysts and addresses issues of the latter associated with either contamination inherent from the synthetic route or poor adhesion to the supporting electrode. The synthetic protocol includes as a first step, electrochemical codeposition of a Au((1-x))Ag(x) alloy in a thiosulfate based electrolyte followed by selective electrochemical dissolution (dealloying) of Ag as the less noble metal, that generates an ultrathin and preferably continuous porous structure featuring thickness of less than 20 nm. NPG is then functionalized with Pt (no thicker than 1 nm) by surface limited redox replacement (SLRR) of underpotentially deposited Pb layer to form Pt-NPG. SLRR ensures complete coverage of the surface with Pt, believed to spread evenly over the NPG matrix. Testing of the catalyst at a proof-of-concept level demonstrates its high catalytic activity toward formic acid oxidation. Current densities of 40-50 mA cm(-2) and mass activities of 1-3 A.mg(-1) (of combined Pt-Au catalyst) have been observed and the Pt-NPG thin films have lasted over 2600 cycles in standard formic acid oxidation testing.  相似文献

The behaviour of water in nanopores is very different from that of bulk water. Close to hydrophobic surfaces, the water density has been found to be lower than in the bulk, and if confined in a sufficiently narrow hydrophobic nanopore, water can spontaneously evaporate. Molecular dynamics simulations have suggested that a nanopore can be switched between dry and wet states by applying an electric potential across the nanopore membrane. Nanopores with hydrophobic walls could therefore create a gate system for water, and also for ionic and neutral species. Here, we show that single hydrophobic nanopores can undergo reversible wetting and dewetting due to condensation and evaporation of water inside the pores. The reversible process is observed as fluctuations between conducting and non-conducting ionic states and can be regulated by a transmembrane electric potential.  相似文献

The emergence of nanotechnology has coincided with an increased recognition of the need for new approaches to understand and manage the impact of emerging technologies on the environment and human health. Important elements in these new approaches include life-cycle thinking, public participation and adaptive management of the risks associated with emerging technologies and new materials. However, there is a clear need to develop a framework for linking research on the risks associated with nanotechnology to the decision-making needs of manufacturers, regulators, consumers and other stakeholder groups. Given the very high uncertainties associated with nanomaterials and their impact on the environment and human health, research resources should be directed towards creating the knowledge that is most meaningful to these groups. Here, we present a model (based on multi-criteria decision analysis and a value of information approach) for prioritizing research strategies in a way that is responsive to the recommendations of recent reports on the management of the risk and impact of nanomaterials on the environment and human health.  相似文献
