In their paper, Trtik et al. (2009) identify spurious peaks in the application of statistical nanoindentation technique as a critical obstacle for mechanical phase identification. In this discussion, we show that Trtik et al.’s finding is a consequence of an unrealistic virtual 3-D checkerboard microstructure considered by the authors. These peaks are not a general feature of indentation on multiphase materials, nor can the presence of such peaks be attributed to an intrinsic shortcoming of the grid-indentation technique. We also show that the authors’ assertion of the absence of homogeneous material regions extending beyond 3 μm in cementitious materials is groundless. 相似文献

Multibeam interference represents an approach for producing one-, two-, and three-dimensional periodic optical-intensity distributions with submicrometer features and periodicities. Accordingly, interference lithography (IL) has been used in a wide variety of applications, typically requiring additional lithographic steps to modify the periodic interference pattern and create integrated functional elements. In the present work, pattern-integrated interference lithography (PIIL) is introduced. PIIL is the integration of superposed pattern imaging with IL. Then a pattern-integrated interference exposure system (PIIES) is presented that implements PIIL by incorporating a projection imaging capability in a novel three-beam interference configuration. The purpose of this system is to fabricate, in a single-exposure step, a two-dimensional periodic photonic-crystal lattice with nonperiodic functional elements integrated into the periodic pattern. The design of the basic system is presented along with a model that simulates the resulting optical-intensity distribution at the system sample plane where the three beams simultaneously interfere and integrate a superposed image of the projected mask pattern. Appropriate performance metrics are defined in order to quantify the characteristics of the resulting photonic-crystal structure. These intensity and lattice-vector metrics differ markedly from the metrics used to evaluate traditional photolithographic imaging systems. Simulation and experimental results are presented that demonstrate the fabrication of example photonic-crystal structures in a single-exposure step. Example well-defined photonic-crystal structures exhibiting favorable intensity and lattice-vector metrics demonstrate the potential of PIIL for fabricating dense integrated optical circuits. 相似文献

The modeling of the interaction between piezoelectric wafer active sensors (PWAS) and structural waves and vibration is addressed. Three main issues are discussed: (a) modeling of pitch-catch ultrasonic waves between a PWAS transmitter and a PWAS receiver by comparison between exact Lamb wave solutions and various finite element method (FEM) results; (b) analytical modeling of the power and energy transduction between PWAS and ultrasonic guided waves highlighting the tuning opportunities between PWAS and the waves; (c) the use of the transfer matrix method to model the electromechanical (E/M) impedance method for direct reading of high-frequency local structural vibration and comparison with FEM results. While the literature is rich with data for the electrical behavior of nanotransistors based on semiconductor nanowires and carbon nanotubes, few data are available for ultrascaled metal interconnects that will be demanded by these devices. Atomic layer deposition (ALD), which uses a sequence of self-limiting surface reactions to achieve high-quality nanolayers, provides an unique opportunity to study the limits of electrical and thermal conduction in metal interconnects. This work measures and interprets the electrical and thermal conductivities of free-standing platinum films of thickness 7.3, 9.8, and 12.1 nm in the temperature range from 50 to 320 K. Conductivity data for the 7.3 nm bridge are reduced by 77.8% (electrical) and 66.3% (thermal) compared to bulk values due to electron scattering at material and grain boundaries. The measurement results indicate that the contribution of phonon conduction is significant in the total thermal conductivity of the ALD films. 相似文献

Few-layer graphene (FLG) sheets with sizes exceeding several micrometers have been synthesized by exfoliation of expanded graphite in aqueous solution of ammonia under microwave irradiation, with an overall yield approaching 8 wt.%. Transmission electron microscopy (in bright-field and dark-field modes) together with electron diffraction patterns and atomic force microscopy confirmed that this graphene material consisted mostly of mono-, bi- or few-layer graphene (less than ten layers). The high degree of surface reduction was confirmed by X-ray photoelectron and infrared spectroscopies. In addition, the high stability of the FLG in the liquid medium facilitates the deposition of the graphene material onto several substrates via low-cost solution-phase processing techniques, opening the way to subsequent applications of the material. 相似文献

In this article, we develop a bivariate ordered Probit model to analyze the decision to fasten the safety belt in a car and the resulting severity of accidents if it happens. The approach takes into account the fact that the decision to fasten the safety belt has a direct causal effect on the category of injury if an accident happens. Our application to a sample drawn from the database of French accident reports in 2003 for three populations of car users (drivers, front passengers, rear passengers) shows that fastening the safety belt is significantly related to a decrease in severe injuries but it shows also that these car users compensate partly for this safety benefit. Furthermore, it is observed that demographic characteristics of car users, as well as transport facilities, play important roles in decisions to fasten safety belts and in the eventual resulting accident injuries. 相似文献

We report the scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM) characterization of a 4 x 4 multimode interference (MMI) device working at a wavelength of 1.55 microm and designed for astronomical signal recombination. A comprehensive analysis of the mapped propagating field is presented. We compare SNOM measurements with beam-propagation-method simulations and thus are able to determine the MMI structure's refractive-index contrast and show that the measured value is higher than the expected value. Further investigation allows us to demonstrate that good care must be taken with the refractive-index profile used in simulation when one deals with low-index contrast structures. We show evidence that a step-index contrast is not suitable for adequate simulation of our structure and present a model that permits good agreement between measured and simulated propagating fields. 相似文献

In sheep, recognition of the familiar lamb by the mother depends on the learning of its olfactory signature after parturition. The authors quantified Fos changes in order to identify brain regions activated during lamb odor memory formation. Brain activation was compared with those measured in anosmic ewes displaying maternal behavior but not individual lamb recognition. In intact ewes, parturition induced significant increase in Fos expression in olfactory cortical regions and in cortical amygdala, whereas in anosmic mothers, Fos expression was very low. In contrast, no difference was observed between intact and anosmic ewes in hypothalamic areas and medial amygdala, suggesting a differentiation between the neural network controlling maternal responsiveness and that involved in olfactory lamb memory. Magnetic nanowires of CoFe 2O4 were casted inside the channel of multiwall carbon nanotubes by mild chemical synthesis. A detailed investigation of these nanowires was performed using mainly the electron tomography technique; this study provides a complete characterization of their microstructure in terms of the spatial organization and the size distribution of individual particles forming the nanowire as well as its residual porosity. In particular, we have shown that the size of the CoFe 2O4 monocrystalline particles is closely dependent on the location of the particle within the nanotube, i.e., small particles close to the tube tip (5 nm) and bigger particles inside the tube channel (15 nm). As the theoretical critical size for superparamagnetic relaxation in CoFe 2O4 is estimated within the range of 4-9 nm, the size distribution obtained by 3D-TEM agrees with the Mossbauer study that suggests the presence of two different magnetic components inside the nanowire. We have shown also that, by using this preparation method and for this internal diameter of nanotube, the CoFe 2O4 nanowire exhibits a continuous structure along the tube, has a residual porosity of 38%, and can fill the tube at only 50%, parameters which influence in a significant manner the magnetic behavior of this system. 相似文献

Optimized butterfly specimen for the fracture testing of sheet materials under combined normal and shear loading 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The present paper is concerned with multi-axial ductile fracture experiments on sheet metals. Different stress-states are achieved within a flat specimen by applying different combinations of normal and transverse loads to the specimen boundaries. The specimen geometry is optimized such that fracture initiates remote from the free specimen boundaries. Fracture experiments are carried out on TRIP780 steel for four different loading conditions, varying from pure shear to transverse plane strain tension. Hybrid experimental–numerical analyses are performed to determine the stress and strain fields within the specimen gage section. The results show that strain localization cannot be avoided prior to the onset of fracture. Through-thickness necking prevails under tension-dominated loading while the deformation localizes along a band crossing the entire gage section under shear-dominated loading. Both experimental and simulation results demonstrate that the proposed fracture testing method is very sensitive to imperfections in the specimen machining. The loading paths to fracture are determined in terms of stress triaxiality, Lode angle parameter and equivalent plastic strain. The experimental data indicates that the relationship between the stress triaxiality and the equivalent plastic strain at the onset of ductile fracture is not unique. 相似文献
