The course of the reparative process in patients with gastric and duodenal peptic ulcers (a clinico-statistical study)

Clinico-statistical evaluation of reparative process in 332 gastric ulcer and 294 duodenal ulcer patients revealed factors of objective value to its course. In order of significance the factors rank as follows: area of ulcer, localization, combination with certain mucosal erosions, total fasting acidity, free fasting hydrochloric acid, basal gastric secretion, cardial function, duodenogastric reflux, sex, age, number of cigarettes smoked daily. When studying treatment effects on regeneration in ulcer patients in is necessary to take into consideration basal clinico-endoscopic parameters.     

The e subunit gene of murine F1F0-ATP synthase. Genomic sequence, chromosomal mapping, and diet regulation

Genomic sequences encoding murine Lfm1, whose predicted protein sequence is 96% and 98% similar to bovine and rat F1F0-ATP synthase e subunits (respectively), have been amplified from BALB/cByJ DNA, cloned, and sequenced. The 1.1-kilobase gene has 3 introns and 4 exons, and its coding sequence differs by two nucleotides compared to the previously published BALB/cHnn Lfm1 cDNA sequence. A PstI restriction site polymorphism in intron 2 between C57BL/6J and Mus spretus was used to map this gene to Chromosome 5 near D5Mit9. Related sequences were mapped on Chromosomes 8, 11, and 2 unlinked loci on Chromosome 2 using Southern blot analyses with the 1. 1-kilobase gene as probe. Previous studies from this laboratory indicated that the Lfm1/e subunit was regulated by the level of dietary fat and carbohydrate. Northern hybridization analyses demonstrated that e subunit mRNA abundance showed statistically significant differences (p < 0.025) between hearts of BALB/c mice fed 3% and those fed 20% corn oil for 2 weeks and in liver (p < 0. 05) from the same animals. Significant differences were also observed in hepatic and heart mRNA expression at different times after eating in animals subjected to a fast/refeed regimen. The implications of the high degree of sequence similarity to the e subunit for rat and bovine F1F0-ATP synthase and its regulation by diet are discussed.     

The biotype and genetic characteristics of an isolate of the cowpox virus causing infection in a child

The study included 138 patients operated on for endo-extracellular pituitary adenomas which extend both intracranially and into the structures of the base of the skull. Operations via transcranial and transsphenoidal access to various tumor sites were performed in 38 patients (a main group), while 100 patients (a control group) underwent one of these operations. Two-stage operations, followed by removal of the suprasellar and basal regions of a tumor, are expedient for enhancing the efficiency of surgical treatment, reducing the incidence of complications associated with traumatic attempts at removing tumor parts hard-to-reach by transcranial or transsphenoidal approaches, as well as at reducing the number of relapses. At the first stage of surgical treatment it is advisable to make an intervention via transcranial access especially in cases of complex configuration of the suprasellar part of a tumor. The recommended interval between transcranial and transsphenoidal surgeries is 3-5 months. Two-stage surgical treatment does not lead to significant structural changes and to the increased number of complications, and to higher mortality rates as compared to one-stage surgery (transcranial or transsphenoidal surgeries alone).     

Determination of antioxidative potential of biological fluids by using semiconductor chemical sensors

A procedure has been developed for determining the concentrations of superoxide anion radical (SOAR) in aprotonic fluids by using semiconductor chemical sensors. SOAR life in pure solutions is 6.3 hours. Supplements of biological fluids (blood, urine, plasma) increase the rate of SOAR death. There is a great difference in the reaction rate of SOAR with biological fluids in apparently healthy and ill individuals. It is suggested that the above procedure opens vistas both for studies of vital activity and for diagnosis of abnormalities.     

A comparison of the efficiency of three anesthesia circle systems

To assess the sensitivity of standard echocardiography in detecting ventricular motion abnormalities in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) without prior myocardial infarction, 56 consecutive patients with a history of angina pectoris were studied during an angina-free period. In the 48 patients with adequate echocardiograms, the amplitude of septal and posterior wall motion in the high, mid, and low left ventricle was determined and used to predict prospectively in a blinded fashion the sites of angiographically-determined CAD. Twenty-eight of 35 patients (80%) with disease of the left anterior descending artery (LAD) had diminished interventricular septal motion (P less than 0.001) and 14 of 27 patients (52%) with disease of posterior vessels had diminished posterior wall motion on echocardiogram. When abnormalties of echocardiographic wall motion were compared with left ventriculography, the results were similar. Echocardiography may aid in predicting the presence and distribution of CAD, especially LAD disease.
