Many economists such as Wilson (2002) [Wilson, R., 2002. Architecture of power market, Econometrica, 70, 1299–1340] have considered that there are similarities between electricity and gas services in the US electric utility industry. Hence, they expect a synergy effect between them. However, the two businesses do not have technology similarities at the level that the gas service produces a synergy effect with electricity. To examine whether there is a synergy effect of corporate diversification in the industry, we compare electricity-specialized firms with diversified utility firms in terms of their financial performance and corporate value. The comparison indicates that core business concentration is more effective for electric utility firms than corporate diversification under the current US deregulation policy.  相似文献

We have designed and manufactured a micromachined moving plate capacitor to be used as an AC voltage reference in electrical metrology. The reference is based on the characteristic AC current–voltage curve of the component having a maximum, the value of which ideally depends only on the geometry of the component and material properties of single crystalline silicon. The electrode surface stability is essential in this application and hence a new fabrication process has been developed to metallize both surfaces of an electrostatically actuated micromachined structure. The stability of the AC reference voltage at a frequency of 100 kHz and an RMS voltage value 6.4 V was measured to be ±60 ppm over 14 h.  相似文献

In aqueous solutions the response of polymers and biological matter to external conditions, such as temperature and pH, is typically based on the hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance and its effects on the polymer conformation. In the solid state, related concepts using competing interactions could allow novel functions. In this work we demonstrate that polymeric self-assembly, reversibility of hydrogen bonding, and polymer-additive phase behaviour allow temperature response in the solid state with large and reversible switching of an optical bandgap. A complex of polystyrene-block-poly(4-vinylpyridinium methanesulphonate) and 3-n-pentadecylphenol leads to the supramolecular comb-shaped architecture with a particularly long lamellar period. The sample is green at room temperature, as an incomplete photonic bandgap due to a dielectric reflector is formed. On heating, hydrogen bonds are broken and 3-n-pentadecylphenol additionally becomes soluble in polystyrene, leading to a sharp and reversible transition at approximately 125 degrees C to uncoloured material due to collapse of the long period. This encourages further developments, for example, for functional coatings or sensors in the solid state.  相似文献

This paper reports a novel process sequence for fabricating micromechanical devices on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafers. Among the merits of the described process are its improved immunity to stiction and elimination of conductor metal endurance problems during sacrificial etching in hydrofluoric acid. With this novel process one can controllably embed vacuum cavities within SOI substrates. Further processing of such cavity wafers enables realization of a wide variety of micromechanical devices based on single crystalline silicon or even integrated read-out circuitry.K. Järvi and T. Finnish driver training was renewed in 1990 with the inclusion of a compulsory skid training course in the curriculum. The study evaluated the renewal's effect on accidents in slippery road conditions. A questionnaire was sent by mail to 41000 novice drivers who were randomly selected from the official register of driving licences. It included questions on driving exposure and the accidents the drivers had been involved in during 6-18 months following licensing. The rate of return was 74.7%. Half of the drivers had received their licence in 1989 and had, therefore, not received any skid training. The other half had received their licence in 1990 after the introduction of the skid training course. The results showed no effects of the renewal on slippery road accidents for either male or female drivers. Another questionnaire was sent to 1300 old and new curriculum drivers immediately after licensing and a second time 1/2-1 year later, both with questions about skills, worries and perceived risks regarding driving in slippery conditions. The new curriculum drivers showed higher confidence in their skills and they were less afraid to drive in slippery conditions than the old curriculum drivers. This increase in confidence as a result of skid training is discussed. It is argued that high confidence in one's personal skills does not necessarily imply negative safety. The crucial factor is how these skills are used, and for what purpose.  相似文献

Microscope workers are exposed to continuous static muscular work and an increased risk of musculoskeletal disorders in the neck, shoulder and upper extremities. In a Finnish research centre, microscope workers reported pain in the shoulder, neck, lower back and upper back. As a consequence, a programme to solve the ergonomic problems of microscope work was initiated and led to the construction of a new table for microscopes. Ten experienced male microscope workers were chosen as subjects to carry out an experimental study in which the new table and an old one, an ordinary non-adjustable laboratory table, were compared in a standardized microscope task. The dependent variable was the electromyographic activity measured from muscles in the neck–shoulder region. The new table allowed the microscope to be used with the head in an upright position, the forearms supported and with less flexion of the upper arm. Surface electromyographic measurements also confirmed that the changes were ergonomic improvements.  相似文献

Pricing based adaptive scheduling method for bandwidth allocation   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
In this paper we present a packet scheduling method which guarantees bandwidth of the connection and optimizes revenue of the network service provider. A closed form formula for updating the adaptive weights of a packet scheduler is derived from a revenue-based optimization problem. The weight updating procedure is fast and independent on the assumption of the connections’ statistical behavior. The features of the algorithm are simulated and analyzed with and without a call admission control (CAC) mechanism. We also show in context with the CAC procedure a mechanism for guaranteeing a specified mean bandwidth for different service classes.  相似文献
