A system that acts as a biomimetic of the silica‐synthesizing enzyme found in a marine sponge is reported by Morse and co‐workers on p. 1234. Gold nanoparticles (GNPs) are functionalized with the same organic moieties that are found in the enzyme's catalytic site. Interaction between the nucleophilic (OH‐terminated) and hydrogen‐bonding (imidazole‐terminated) GNPs, as shown on the cover, is required for the hydrolysis of a silicon alkoxide precursor and subsequent polycondensation to form silica at a low temperature and near‐neutral pH. Replacement of either of the required functional groups by a non‐reactive methyl group abolishes catalysis in this synthetic system, as it does in the biological enzyme. Vector-borne diseases are among those most sensitive to climate because the ecology of vectors and the development rate of pathogens within them are highly dependent on environmental conditions. Bluetongue (BT), a recently emerged arboviral disease of ruminants in Europe, is often cited as an illustration of climate''s impact on disease emergence, although no study has yet tested this association. Here, we develop a framework to quantitatively evaluate the effects of climate on BT''s emergence in Europe by integrating high-resolution climate observations and model simulations within a mechanistic model of BT transmission risk. We demonstrate that a climate-driven model explains, in both space and time, many aspects of BT''s recent emergence and spread, including the 2006 BT outbreak in northwest Europe which occurred in the year of highest projected risk since at least 1960. Furthermore, the model provides mechanistic insight into BT''s emergence, suggesting that the drivers of emergence across Europe differ between the South and the North. Driven by simulated future climate from an ensemble of 11 regional climate models, the model projects increase in the future risk of BT emergence across most of Europe with uncertainty in rate but not in trend. The framework described here is adaptable and applicable to other diseases, where the link between climate and disease transmission risk can be quantified, permitting the evaluation of scale and uncertainty in climate change''s impact on the future of such diseases. 相似文献

Costs associated with worker injuries can be high and some suggest investments in ergonomic solutions can lower those costs. However, many employers are still unsure if investing in various ergonomic solutions will generate benefits such as increased production and/or reduce workmen's compensation expenses. Estimating current losses and predicting possible gains provide most of the information needed to decide upon ergonomic investment. Clinical mastitis records for 6.5 yr from a large north Florida dairy and corresponding daily weather data were analyzed. Monthly incidence of clinical mastitis was expressed as percent of cow-days in milk and graphed against monthly average daily maximum temperature humidity index values and monthly total rainfall. No trends were evident with rainfall. In 3 of 6 yr, monthly incidence of clinical mastitis increased more than 50% above annual incidence, and this followed high monthly temperature-humidity values. Least squares was used to estimate regression coefficients of temperature-humidity index categories based on 999,969 Holstein records. A temperature humidity index category represented the number of days used to calculate average daily maximum temperature-humidity index value. Sources of variation in observed occurrence of clinical mastitis were cow, parity, month, year, interaction of parity by month, and continuous effects of temperature-humidity index categories 2, 6, 15, 30, 60, each to third order and 60 by parity interaction. In all temperature-humidity index categories as the temperature-humidity index value increased, occurrence of clinical mastitis increased. When values rose from 55 to 80, twice as many for 2 d cows showed signs of clinical mastitis. 相似文献

The properties of coplanar propagation waveguides (CPW) on various diamond substrates are investigated. We demonstrate that on such material, the physico-chemical surface treatments may be fundamental to obtain good microwave properties. CPW were processed on single crystal CVD diamond samples that were grown either as bulk substrate or as a thin epitaxial layer on a type IIa natural diamond substrate. These CPW exhibited losses around 0.15 dB/mm at 10 GHz and 0.25 dB/mm at 40 GHz. Temperature-dependant measurements imply that structural defects may involve parasitic current conduction. The loss angle tangents of both samples have then been extracted from a quasi-TEM numerical modelling, they are about 0.025 for each kind of substrate. 相似文献

The Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) is an invasive species that has the potential to transmit infectious diseases such as dengue and chikungunya fever. Using high-resolution observations and regional climate model scenarios for the future, we investigated the suitability of Europe for A. albopictus using both recent climate and future climate conditions. The results show that southern France, northern Italy, the northern coast of Spain, the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea and western Turkey were climatically suitable areas for the establishment of the mosquito during the 1960–1980s. Over the last two decades, climate conditions have become more suitable for the mosquito over central northwestern Europe (Benelux, western Germany) and the Balkans, while they have become less suitable over southern Spain. Similar trends are likely in the future, with an increased risk simulated over northern Europe and slightly decreased risk over southern Europe. These distribution shifts are related to wetter and warmer conditions favouring the overwintering of A. albopictus in the north, and drier and warmer summers that might limit its southward expansion. 相似文献

In this work, we present results on the formation of vertical molecule structures formed by two vertically aligned InAs quantum
dots (QD) in which a deliberate control of energy emission is achieved. The emission energy of the first layer of QD forming
the molecule can be tuned by the deposition of controlled amounts of InAs at a nanohole template formed by GaAs droplet epitaxy.
The QD of the second layer are formed directly on top of the buried ones by a strain-driven process. In this way, either symmetric
or asymmetric vertically coupled structures can be obtained. As a characteristic when using a droplet epitaxy patterning process,
the density of quantum dot molecules finally obtained is low enough (2 × 108 cm−2) to permit their integration as active elements in advanced photonic devices where spectroscopic studies at the single nanostructure

Hydrodynamic pressure processing (HDP) was investigated as a technology to reduce spoilage microorganisms found in fresh beef. In two separate studies (studies 1 and 2), retail ground beef and beef roasts were purchased (day 0). The roasts were divided into stew pieces (30 to 40 g). All meat samples, including control samples, were stored at 5 degrees C for 20 h in a plastic film. After storage, designated samples were treated with HDP In study 3, ground beef was treated with HDP (day 0) and stored aerobically (5 degrees C) for 14 days with control samples. Each meat type was vacuum-packaged for HDP (100 g binary explosive, steel shock wave container). The pHs and the aerobic plate counts (log10 CFU/g) were measured on day 0 (studies I and 2) and on days 0, 7, and 14 (study 3) for control samples and for HDP-treated samples. There was no pH difference between control and HDP-treated meat types (studies 1 and 2); HDP reduced bacteria in both meat types in study 1 (2 log) and study 2 (1.5 log) on day 0. In study 3, there was a significant difference (P < 0.05) in pH between control meat (8.2) and HDP-treated meat (5.6) after storage. There was an immediate reduction (1.5 log) of microorganisms following HDP (day 0) and a 4.5-log difference between control samples (9 log) and HDP-treated samples (4.5) after 14 days of storage. With HDP, it is possible to reduce spoilage microorganisms found in or on different meat types (ground beef versus stew pieces), which could extend the shelf life of meat products. 相似文献

Adherent macrophage populations derived from monocytes isolated from peripheral blood were evaluated for their ability to "shed" the membrane-associated receptor for TNF-alpha (TNFR) following exposure to a calcium ionophor (A23187) and a synthetic chemotactic peptide (fMLP) reagent. A soluble fraction of TNFR was detected in "cell-free" supernatant produced by stimulated macrophage populations applying 125I-TNF-alpha and biotinylated TNF-alpha ligand-binding analysis (96-well format) in combination with conventional autoradiographic techniques. Approximate molecular weight of the shed TNFR glycoprotein fraction was estimated to be 75 kDa based on interpretation of nondenaturing PAGE gels transferred laterally onto sheets of nitrocellulose membrane subsequently probed by ligand-binding analysis applying 125I-TNF-alpha and biotinylated TNF-alpha as detection modalities. Immunorecognition techniques were also employed to detect TNFR fragments shed from macrophages using biotinylated anti-TNFR Type II (75 kDa) monoclonal antibody in combination with conjugated strepavidin:HRPO and a chemiluminescent substrate reagent. In an effort to identify the class of enzyme directly mediating TNFR Type II (75 kDa) shedding, a spectrum of carboxyl- (e.g., aspartate), hydroxyl- (e.g., serine), thiol (e.g., cysteine), and metalo- (e.g., Ca2+, Mg2+) protease-inhibiting agents were evaluated. Experimental findings implied that a carboxy (aspartate) peptidase, and possibly to a lesser extent, serine (hydroxyl), and thiol (cysteine) peptidases participate in macrophage TNFR Type II (75 kDa) shedding phenomena. Subsequent investigations demonstrated that the carboxy (aspartate) peptidase cathepsin-D promoted liberation of TNFR Type II (75 kDa) in unactivated populations of adherent macrophages. In an effort to complement these observations, a protein fraction with presumed carboxy (aspartate) protease activity was isolated from the cell-free supernatant generated by activated populations of adherent macrophages using immobilized pepstatin-A beaded agarose. Exposure of unstimulated populations of adherent macrophages to the partially purified pepstatin-A binding protein fractions resulted in the liberation of a soluble TNFR Type II (75 kDa) fragment based on interpretation of ligand-binding and immunorecognition analysis of samples developed by SDS-PAGE/PAGE format and transferred onto sheets of nitrocellulose membrane. The molecular weight of the macrophage pepstatin-A binding protein fraction was estimated to be 47-52 kDa with lesser bands also visible at approximately 26-32 kDa, and 100 kDa based on SDS-PAGE analysis. Nondenaturing hemoglobin-PAGE substrate gel analysis of protein fractions possessing pepstatin-A binding-avidity detected a protease with a molecular weight of approximately 47-52 kDa that proteolytically digested hemoglobin, in addition to a synthetic cathepsin-D specific peptide substrate. Collective interpretation of these experimental findings directly corresponds with many of the physical (molecular) and functional (biochemical) characteristics known to be associated with the leukocyte carboxy (aspartate) peptidase cathepsin-D, which is a non-metaloprotease known to exert relatively limited proteolytic activity. 相似文献
