Transfusion management of an IgA deficient patient with anti-IgA and incidental correction of IgA deficiency after allogeneic bone marrow transplantation

In serology, lack of specificity can generally be attributed to cross-reactions between different pathogens with antigens bearing similar epitopes. During seroepidemiologic surveys of contagious agalactia of sheep caused by Mycoplasma agalactiae infection, numerous sera were analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). A few sera reacted with various antigens coated on plates, including the well with no antigen. This reactivity was not due to cross-reactions as initially suspected, and these multipositive sera were designated false-positive sera. Elimination of this false positivity was not possible by using covalent ELISA plates or different rabbit anti-sheep IgG conjugates. Only conjugates using monoclonal antibodies or protein G were efficient in elimination of false positivities without reducing the true specific positive titers. No false-positive sera have been observed since the implementation of protein G conjugates in the serologic diagnosis of contagious agalactia by ELISA for the past 2 years.     

Fast neural net simulation with a DSP processor array

This paper describes the implementation of a fast neural net simulator on a novel parallel distributed-memory computer. A 60-processor system, named MUSIC (multiprocessor system with intelligent communication), is operational and runs the backpropagation algorithm at a speed of 330 million connection updates per second (continuous weight update) using 32-b floating-point precision. This is equal to 1.4 Gflops sustained performance. The complete system with 3.8 Gflops peak performance consumes less than 800 W of electrical power and fits into a 19-in rack. While reaching the speed of modern supercomputers, MUSIC still can be used as a personal desktop computer at a researcher's own disposal. In neural net simulation, this gives a computing performance to a single user which was unthinkable before. The system's real-time interfaces make it especially useful for embedded applications.     

Niobium microelectrodes for submicron particle confinement

By the superposition of niobium, titanium and gold layers have been fabricated electrodes for submicron particles confinement by dielectrophoresis forces. Electron beam lithography allowed us to define the critical geometries of the electrodes in the submicron range. The niobium layer improves also the mechanical strength of the electrodes and their robustness against the galvanic corrosion making them suitable for the confinement of particles and viruses immersed in a physiological solution.
